  • A primary interest is to add interest to my sculptures. In this video I am using "bare bronze rod". This is the same bare bronze rod I use for brazing. This is a hard (stiff) material that requires annealing for easier forming. Bare bronze rod is an relativity inexpensive material. I keep finding more and more ways that I can use this in my sculptures. This same rod can be used in jewelry. when buffed up, through buffing, it has the same appearance of brass. Give it a try and see how it works from you.

Hi George, just wondered if you might clear something up for me.I am building a Triumph motorcycle and I have a cylinder head gasket which needs annealing. As I understand it, I heat the Copper gasket up to cherry red and then, and this is where it gets tricky I have been told one of two things ....either quench it in water or quench it in oil??? I simply wanted to know which you think I should use?
I really love your videos they are very engaging. I am making two fenders for my motorcycle and a fuel tank and an oil tank all out of copper and I use your videos for guidance and inspiration. So thank you very much. I live on the south coast of England so having a cheater on the other side of the pond is quite refreshing👌

Jan, I don't quench primarily because I'm not in that big of a hurry. I've read where quenching is a shock to the metal - going from red hot to cold in an instant. Quenching in oil. I've never quenched copper in oil. However I have quenched steel. The result is that heating the steel up to red hot opens the pores of the steel and the oil impregnators into those open pores. (That a non-technical explanation) Whether that works with copper I don't know. If I was going to quench , I would make sure that the copper is evenly heated. If you could find a metallurgical forum or a welding engineering forum you could probably get a definitive answer. Thanks for an interesting question. George

is there any way to make a low temperature brazing rods or is there any ready made ones?
i need something for small pieces and thin materials.

Have you tried silver solder? Google "HARRIS STAY-SILV 15 PHOS-COPPER SILVER BRAZING ALLOY" . I think it is low temperature rod.
