    Tom, concerning your intro for this part: I personally wouldn't like a snappier or faster approach. I like the way your videos are constructed/edited. The reason I like the IMNC tech videos, is the information and explanations given. It's knowledge.

    I have installed myself a Sonnet Encore ZIF 1GHz 1MB CPU! The process was very difficult, especially without any manuals! You had to flash the ROM, jumper settings changed (where the VOID warranty seal is) etc! But managed to get it working and is so fun to use! :D The purple heatsink makes the inside looks amazing!

    You're enthousiasme is just amazing!! I am planning on doing a cpu upgrade on a older pc laptop, but not a cpu upgrade, a hardwire cpu overclocking method, my cpu runs at peak performance at 1.70Ghz, with the hardwire method, i should double the cpu performance but it will throttle down to a 800Mhz when idle, thx to intel speedstep technology (and that is what you're powerpc chip is actually doing, it will adress only a 500Mhz when idle, but at full load, it will crank up the speed to 1Ghz), so, i am as excited as you are!! Wish me luck man! You're vids our awesome!!!

    The SSD issue could be that you are not actually using the raid card but using the software raid. The system could be smart enough to find half of the system image but it can not initialize the software raid and boot from it. A number of years ago i tried to RAID some IDE drives but had no luck. You have a raid card for IDE that you can boot from although, it would be ridiculous to use that card with some converters to convert SATA to IDE.

  • @evil03mustang08
    @evil03mustang08 7 років тому

    additionally, sometimes after you install on a RAID, you need to boot from the installer and manually select the startup disc from the installer's system preferences menu.

    I also believe the pad thing, which I have on my g3, is a thermal pad rather than a compound so you don't have to reapply thermal paste after upgrading or etc.

    Hello Tom, I think the problem is that you are using Software RAID 0 instead of Hardware RAID 0. I'm not sure about Mac, but on a PC you cannot boot from Software RAID without special software. I think same problem happened here - G3 BIOS do not support booting from this type of software RAID. You need to make hardware RAID 0 (I don't know how to make it on Mac, but on PC: When PC is booting (before POST beep) you have to press some keyboard combination (depends on the card manufacturer) to start RAID utility which is stored on RAID card and then use this utility to make RAID 0.

    • @Dan-TechAndMusic
      @Dan-TechAndMusic 7 років тому +1

      This is impossible on the Mac. There is only Open Firmware and no hardware setup like that found in the PC's BIOS. RAID utilities aren't available. It has to be done in software.

    One solution is to use the SSD as your OS drive and 4x5TB Western Digital Red drives on one RAID card in RAID 10 mode for your personal files and do a reboot and see if that works and I think that it should work as something is causing a system wide crash which is stopping OS X from installing and maybe something in OS X doesn't like the configuration, That CPU socket looks like the socket on the Gigabyte M2N68-LA (Narra3) motherboard.

    at the start f the video, it was not working because you created a "soft raid" not a "hard raid" you need a hard raid to boot with a raid array. with a soft raid, you need an os installed/ a external boot device to boot to the raid array.

  • @MrArmadaskier4123
    @MrArmadaskier4123 7 років тому +1

    Hey Tom! That 1Ghz CPU looks like it'll get quite toasty under that heat sink. You should get a pin 40mm noctua fan and mount it to the cooler and power bit by getting a 3 pin fan splitter and plugging it into the motherboard!

    • @ItsMyNaturalColour
      @ItsMyNaturalColour  7 років тому +1

      Hey man! It's strange because lots of the CPU upgrades from the same time came with their own heatsinks and fans, especially the higher clocked G4 chips from Sonnet. This one apparently doesn't get any hotter than the stock CPU, but for a combination of coolness and reassurance, I think I will get a fan for it. It'll also make it look a little beefier! Kinda weird upgrading the CPU and keeping a tiny heatsink.

    • @MrArmadaskier4123
      @MrArmadaskier4123 7 років тому +1

      ItsMyNaturalColour Wow! I honestly never would've figured that the G3 upgrade chip would produce around the same amount of heat as the original. That being said, the fact that you used real thermal paste would improve the cooling performance as well. I agree with you though, I think it would make the system look even better. And peace of mind is always a good thing ;) anyways though man, absolutely loving the series. Hopefully we can see that G4 MDD back in action some time! Wouldn't want that graphics card going to waste I sent you a while back! ;)

    Hi, very good video series.
    You definitely inspire me to find a project like the Mac G3 B&W.
    And I found a really cheap Power Mac G4 (PCI Graphics).
    CPU was 350Mhz and I found a 400Mhz. Not a real speed jump but this is just a fun project.
    I had the same problem you had with the CPU speed not showing the right speed and a looked at the motherboard more closely and there are jumpers under the with sticker "Void warranty if seal is broken". It is one big jumper. Yours in the video is white mine was blue. I removed it and replaced it with smaller jumpers. See this site for the jumpers settings :
    eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=zif/bwjumpers.html
    I tried different settings but in my case the best result was at 450Mhz.
    Keep the good work.
    Thanks
    Claude

    I found the amount of thermal paste pretty amusing. I've just had to strip down my 15" 2015 MBP (6 months out of warranty) to replace the thermal paste, after seeing temps in the high 90s when running Logic. Apple applied enough not only to cover the chips but also some of the logic board, cables and a few other parts. Have done the same to a 2012 MBP, 2 2008 Mac Pros and a number of iMacs. It seems that despite plenty of technological advancements, Apple have yet to learn to apply thermal paste properly.
