How do you sin Akeem for knowing women can have their own mind and free will in a marriage....and then sin him for not seeing that his mother has her own mind and free will in her marriage?

Because Akeem knows that women can have their own mind but doesn't see that his mother does? So they're trying to say that Akeem is knowledgeable about the world and in the same breath trying to say that he has no idea about how good relationships work. What's so hard to understand in that?

I saw Coming to America in the movies when I was 18 years old... no exaggeration I've seen it at least a hundred and fifty times I know every part by heart!!! Did anyone else fall in love with this classic?
My mother doesn't really like movies and even she thinks Coming to America is quite fun

I never considered coming to America a "black movie", though now it seems obvious Coming from Germany, I just liked the story and humour as any kid (all we get is dubbed). Any cultural context went right over my head and in my book it's just some fine movie.
Also the bath scene was a real game changer as a child. Eye opening even, I'd say

Im a black American and I thought of it just as a Parr for the course Eddie Murphy comedy that everyone has seen until I brought it up and only got met with blank stares.
Actually if my memory serves me...I believe Akeem's mother had a heart to heart talk with Lisa about the situation and what her son is actuallya good man. So maybe that is the reason she changed her mind and was able to colude with the mom and appear at the wedding. And yeah..super-duper rich and nice and can fight makes it that much easier. No-brainer actually.

Sort of how I felt. I don't think the bad reviews it's getting are really undeserved, but I came out of the movie more or less entertained. I wish it'd focused more on Murphy and Hall instead of the new characters (though I liked the story with the son and the hair girl) but I think enough could've been done with the original characters and Akeem being convinced by his daughters to allow his eldest to one day rule. More than enough there to build a story on, we didn't need the stuff with the son and Leslie Jones.
Wesley Snipes needs more comedy rolls. He was cracking me the fu-k up bad.

As someone who reviews a lot of movies: Jeremy doesn't understand that their is/was a "WGA Screenwriting Guild Credit system" (i.e. everyone who had a major input to the making of the movie gets a credit at the start).
*Fun Fact time:* It was only in the late 70's, early 80's that this trend started to die off for "Just slap the headliners and title on a screen and get on with the action" (Blame Lucas!!) hell we've done away with showing the movie title at the start and sticking it at the end of the of the move these days...
... Give it a few years and Disnley will have to use the post-post credit scene to show the movie title...
IIRC he actually tried to do with with THX 1138, but got slapped for it.
But he succeeded when he released ANH.
