I ws deployed for Operation Desert Storm. The first time I saw this was on the plane heading back to the US. There wasn't a dry eye on that plane. It was an emotional roller-coaster of a plane ride. I still get emotional every time I hear this song!
NJ, USA. Thanks for reacting to this. I remember this from like my junior school days and I feel like most people forgot about this, but it's such a great song for such a great cause! David Foster wrote it.
I remember when this came out. My family was stationed in Germany and bought this on vhs. It shows behind the scenes of the making of song and who they all got to sing. Even showed them showing song to troops in their tents.
I was deployed for Desert Storm and have a copy of the video with behind the scenes production shots. Another one of our favorites at that time was Wind Beneath My Wings (Bette Midler).
The guitar player is Mark Knopfler, frontman of British rock band Dire Straits - a must to check out! "Tunnel of Love", "Telegraph Road", "Sultans of Swing" (especially the Alchemy live version), "Brothers in Arms" and many, many more phenomenal songs. Pure magic!
I remember this when it happened. It was a song for our soldiers who were going to war to liberate Kuwait after being invaded by Iraq. We bombed the $hit out of them, and it was over in a matter of weeks. Very good song, actually, and many very talented vocalists. I think Celine really shined here.
I remember hearing this on AFRTS over in the desert in 1991. Still bring tears to my eyes. And it has nothing to do with Apartheid. It was in support of the US troops in Saudi Arabia preparing for Desert Storm.
Hi Maddy, it’s friends here again. That recording was supposedly one of the most difficult things to record. Much like “US for Africa” video there was so much drama behind the scenes and during post production. So many unchecked egos complaining about not enough exclusive voice and face time. Some of the Artist couldn’t even be in the same room as one another. It kind of ruins the message of these types of compilation songs. They were there for the paycheck, not a good cause. That’s probably why they don’t do songs like this anymore. All that being said, great reaction regardless🤘🏼
This song was actually in support of US troops during Desert Storm.

R.i.P to Warren Wiebe , the soloist who got the last line of the song. A super talented studio musician, He killed himself a few years after this.😢
I knew he had passed away, but did not know it was by his own hand. How sad.

Made for the troops of Operation Desert Storm in 91.

This was about the Gulf war. For our soldiers

That’s like the “USA for Africa” video with all the celebrity singers back in the 80s, where they all sing the song “We are the world”
Bob Marley was already dead when this song was made. That was Whoopi Goldberg
Marley died 10 years before this song came out.
There was an anti apartheid collab in 1985 (I had to look it up.) ... Artists United Against Apartheid - Sun City.
