    John D'Angelico is revered as the foremost archtop guitar maker of the jazz age. Working with one or two assistants (including, latterly, James D'Aquisto), he made 1,164 archtops under his own name from 1932 until his untimely death, aged 59 in 1964. His early guitars cloned Gibson's L-5 but soon developed a unique, often highly ornamented style embodied by his two most famous designs, the Excel and the New Yorker.
    The new D'Angelico company is offering a range of all-laminate Korean-made guitars, while in the USA Gene Baker has the unenviable task of hand-carving solid wood archtops that replicate the original D'Angelico style.
    Here, Guitarist editor Jamie Dickson and jazz guitar aficionado Denny Ilett put the affordable recreation of the D'Angelico Excel, the £999 EXL-1, and the EX-SS, a single-cut thinline semi priced at £1,249, through their paces.

    Everyone dumping on these please note that the Excel series are made in Korea, whereas the cheaper Premier series are made in Indonesia. There are some quality and material differences. Be sure you are playing an Excel model, and not a Premier! I have the Excel EXL-1 and the woodworking seems first rate. I cannot find a flaw. It came with a hard case, not a gig bag. I did have some trouble with a pot failing, so in my experience the weak point is the electronics/wiring. But the Excel series is a great line of guitars for the price, and an even better value on sale!

    Have an EXL-1 as a working jazz guitar and it works well for me. It feels playable and I don't have to worry about a $3000+ guitar sitting around unattended at my gigs. I really like the neck shape for jazz guitar. It may not have the best acoustic-only sound, but it sounds pretty decent through an amp. Mine had an issue with the pickguard mounting, but it was a minor adjustment. I use flatwound 12's, and I like the action probably a bit higher than most, so no fret buzz for me.

    The slide sounds of the roundwound bass strings are very unpleasant for the clean sounds. Here, flat wounds would be much more appropriate.

    I hate when companies put out a cheaper product than they used to. Everything has to be about saving a dime. Every one of your archtops needs to have an ebony board, split block or MOP/Abalone inlays, and gloss finishes. Your "matte" finish crap is just trying to sell suckers a products that you don't want to spend the time or cost to finish properly. Some people may be fooled, but many of us are not. Penny wise, dollar foolish.

    • @vitopettito1689
      @vitopettito1689 6 років тому +2

      It's about saving YOU a dime. Some people don't have 3 grand to blow on a fancy guitar with a Gibson logo on the head.

    • @daw162
      @daw162 6 років тому

      I'd rather have the matte finish, personally. It's not about money. I think a giant thick layer of cool looking acrylic is just a waste. A flashy add-on from the past when people were spending one or two months' pay on a spruce arch top guitar.
      Except it was nitro.
      Never heard a guitar that sounded better because it was caked with a thick buffed finish, and I've bought as high as a Heritage Golden Eagle new. Don't much care for the big MOP inlays, either.
      I do care about the stability of the guitar and decent fretwork, or at least fretwork that only requires minor correction.
      At this point, though, you're complaining about components on a guitar that probably wholesales for $800. I'd like to see you try to make one for anything close.
      (My golden eagle is long gone. I spent what would be $5k in today's dollars on it, and it didn't really inspire. Some finish flaws, played OK, and wood that was OK but not befitting of a $5k guitar that's not hand carved - meaning you can't claim the duplicarver time ate up the budget and prevented using better wood).
      I'm going to make an archtop, but I don't think I can find the components to make a guitar as good as this for what they get wholesale. Just found an Ex-SS burst being clearanced (new) at a GC online for $799. It's going to cost me $250-300 to get good spruce just for the top of the next archtop I build. The EX-SS is laminated, but for $799, who cares? It'll probably be more stable than the solid top guitar I'm building.

    It's a relatively cheap guitar with a laminated top and laminated sides, and the frets are cheap soft material. Go ahead and play it aggressively for several minutes then check the frets under good light. You WILL see many scratches due to the soft metal used.
    Typical Korean offerings. Ok at best at the price point. No surprises there. There are dozens of offerings similar to this now on the market under many names, all are not that well built, no surprise, you get what you pay for.
