I read a version of this story when I was in 5th grade. It was actually told from the book "Scary stories to Tell in the Dark" same story but the guy is not blind just stuck in the bed far from the window. The guy by the window told of all the great actions going on outside. The guy far from the window wanted to see all the activities for himself so he knocks off the guy by the window so the bed is empty so he can now move into it. Being so excited to see all the activities for himself he opens the curtains and to his surprise there is a brick wall. Knowing he got rid of the story teller as he was stuck in this room for the rest of his life now has to live them with regret and lonely misery. I must say this version is much nicer and lovely. Really enjoyed this and brought me back to my childhood even if the version is different still great memories!!
