My grandmother passed recently and cleaning out her house gave me and my mom a new outlook on sentimental items. What means something to you will likely not be meaningful or practical to your children or grandchildren. We kept a few photos and her childhood Russian dance outfit, but for the most part it was all thrown out/sold/donated. As we were going through everything my mom said “I don’t want you to have to do this in my house one day.” We’ve both been majorly purging our own houses since then.
cdh5068 I wish my mom would realize this. When we cleaned out my grandma's place she kept saying it was to much stuff but when I go to my mom's house I see the same habits. I've tried talking to her about how it feels to live clutter free she gets angry with me. Dont know what to do :(
I cleaned out my ex's nonnas house and she was a secret hoarder. It was distressing.

I started living more minimal about a year ago and I would never go back! I find so much more joy in saving my money and going on adventures than I do in spending it on material items! 😊 good luck on your minimalist journey carrie!

I'm the exact same when it comes to stressing out when I have too many things. I've reached a point in my life where I actually enjoy decluttering more than I enjoy buying new things. Weird lol but I'm pretty happy with it. Especially clothes. The more I have the less I wear. I'd always rather have a curated collection of things I actually use.

Oh man- I feel like I need another purge. All your videos are so timely! I watched your wake up early video and last week. I’ve woken up an hour earlier this week and have been taking a long walk before work! I feel a million times better- only a week in!
I have to say, i teared up during the begining when you said about Alex being the love of your life. That was something big ❤ About minimalism, i love the thought of it. I declutter my clothing items and old books i don't read because i have outgrown them on regular basis. Once when i was cleaning up my room, after a particular chapter in my life has ended, i was so surprised to find school textbooks form three grades ago that hold onto without any reason. I think that minimalism is great. I can easily get rid of things, except with cloths because i find that a little bit challenging. I thrown away and donated so many itmes in the past few months yet still i have so much crap around me. I am a messy person but when the mess is huge and slips out of the draws i become crancky. Decluttering is my thing. It makes your mind so much healthier!

I'm definitely the get-rid-of-it-now type, and I've been helping my mom (who's the I-can't-get-rid-of-that-because type) get rid of years of stuff - I just tell her, "It's making you stressed out to have this item; it will make someone else happy to have it." Good tip for anyone out there having trouble downsizing! :)
I've been working on having a minimal lifestyle for quite a while now and the fact of only owning things that are useful and/or bring joy to my life it's really amazing, I have also applied to my relationships and other areas of my life and from removing the clutter I am able to focus on relationships and activities that really add value to my life! yay i love this! i'm living as a minimalist for a while now, i often declutter my material possessions and donate and am very mindful when buying new items, specially when it comes to skincare, hair products, makeup because i think we can get very carried away with it and constantly want to try new products. i don't buy new items until i'm done with the ones i'm using in the present moment, and i decided to stop buying makeup because i already own so much. there are a few products that i use everyday and i just replace them when i'm done with them. i do have a capsule wardrobe too, i have a signature style and sort of implemented a dress code for myself, so i'm not constantly buying new clothes (specially from fast fashion brands), i just purchase good quality, simple pieces that are easy to mix and match and that make me feel good about myself. i also decided to declutter my mind recently, setting my priorities straight and focusing on what truly matters. it really is a journey.
Capsule wardrobe video!!! I don’t know how you can do them practically while also wanting to remain stylish and on trend.
One of my favorite things to do with clothing specifically is have a bag or box that hold my "maybe" clothes. The idea is that if I actually reach for an item out of that bag within 6 months I know i need to keep it. If not, then it goes bye bye. Oh! And always keep a medium sized designated donation box at hand somewhere. :) When it gets full... donate it! Thanks for your tips, love! This journey always feels sooo fresh! Congrats. 💜💚🧡💛

I’m moving at the moment too! I feel you on packing boxes of stuff you really don’t need/want to bring with you. I’ve always wanted to be minimalistic, I’m far from it at the moment. But my boyfriend is a suuuuper hoarder. Especially with tools and screws and bolts and old cords and crap. It drives me crazy!!! Hopefully in our new house we can have a fresh clean slate and try to live a minimalistic lifestyle. Thanks for this video Carrie!! Yay loving the series so far! I love the minimalist lifestyle- I’ve got 6 in my family so it looks a bit different with all my kids. But I do think it helps save a lot of stress! But it can creep up on me, so I feel like I’m constantly working on minimizing and balance.

I started my journey into a clutter free free and more sustainable lifestyle about a year ago and I have been going strong on two years of not shopping fast fashion and impulsively. So I love this series and that you are sharing this message because it is a truly important one. The environment is really suffering and I don’t want to be part of the problem but part of the solution.

I started my journey about a year ago, I have so much further to go. I come from a family of emotional hoarders so breaking that mentally has been a challenge. I am getting better, and watching your videos on self care/love and happiness (I include this video is all of that) definitely helps keep me focused on the end goal! I love your content!! I've been trying to go through my closet and clean out things that I don't use, but it's not easy. But I actually had to pause this video because I got so inspired and I ended up filling two big Ikea bags full of clothes that I will get rid of! :D I kind of started my jurney towards a more minimalistic lifestyle a while ago. I'm not even close to where I want to be but you made me take a small step forward, so thank you!
I just moved back to the US after two years living abroad in Madrid where I pretty much had to live a more minimalistic lifestyle. There's only so much you can fit in a couple suitcases without being charged an overweight fee! But coming back home, I've decided to carry that minimalistic attitude with me and am currently going through all my stuff at home to clear it out. I'm a mix of those two personalities, not a big fan of clutter (especially more as I've grown older) but super nostalgic and sentimental. Now I'm figuring out a way for those two sides of me to collaborate. I really enjoyed this video and am looking forward to more similar ones! :) So happy for you and Alex, such a special time for you two!

New sub here!! After watching The Financial Diet and seriously starting to budget for the future, my pursuit of minimalism got much easier. In addition to whether things are necessary and good for the environment, I also started to feel the weight of how investing in quality matters in the long run. My boyfriend and I are planning our long term goals and therefore finances such as buying an apartment and all, so we’re definitely looking into more sustainable and economical choices like thrifting and not buying things we won’t need in the long run!

Great video! Something that really helped me when I moved recently and had to go through a bunch of things with sentimental value was to take pictures of them. That way I still have them, in a way. Maybe I'll never look at those photos again, but it made it so much easier to throw things away knowing I have pictures of them. :)

I also recently moved and decluttered before, I did one room per day leading up to the move, and only packed the things that I wanted. Everything else that wasn’t packed, I then took straight to a donation center! It made me feel so great unpacking after the move because everything I took out of the boxes I loved! Hi Carrie, I think it's great that you're concerned about the effects we have on the environment and thinking about ways in which you can contribute positively. I want to add that the single best thing anyone can do to help the planet is to stop consuming animal products :) There are some great documentaries out there, like Cowspiracy, Earthlings, Forks Over Knives etc. that I'd highly recommend watching to anyone who is a bit on the fence about "this whole vegan thing". It literally changed my life in the best possible way :)

Congrats on the move and the journey to a more minimalist lifestyle. I started a capsule wardrobe in the spring and have LOVED it. It's also helped me stop buying things I don't need or truly love and want. We're actually planning to downsize.

I just moved recently and have been doing the same thing!! I like to live minimalistic because I dont have a lot of room in my apartment in the first place and also I feel like if I'm not using something I have, it can go to a better home where someone else can appreciate it more :)

Love this type of videos!! I’m totally guilty of holding onto clothing items🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ but I’m trying my best to donate items to local shelters and a boutique that helps homeless students shop for clothes. It always makes me feel better when I know my items are use for someone who’s in need and will appreciate and put things to use.

Also I love to get stuff from slow fashion stores but at the moment I can't find brands that make clothes that inspire me :( most are just veery basic in color and cut! My husband and I are getting ready to move across the country, so we are in the great purge phase. Haha! I have given away so much stuff, sold some, and donated some. Now, when we unpack, I will only unpack everything I am happy to have in my home!
This week I’ve decided to give away books, clothes and other stuffs that I don’t want anymore and make more space and own less things. But I don’t want to go minimalistic, i do not want to stop myself from buying that small thing i like but I make sure it’s something I really like and really want.
I’m about o ship 26 books to 12 people and it feels so good to empty the shelves and see it’s going into a house that will love them.

I kind of live a minimalist life, what I would advice you it’s that letting a piece of your house go, maybe a shirt or a tea pot or a big blanket doesn’t mean that you are not loving the person that give to you. It’s just that sometimes we don’t need all this things to live and to remember the love ones. Hope it helps! ❤️
