And Giles is an awesome photographer to spend time with. He's not doing any photo presentations at the moment; I so wish he was though, he's one of the most engaging minds I know when it comes to talking about photography and conflict.
Funnily enough Alex, we (as a family) have just had Sunday lunch with Giles... he will always serve as an incredible inspirational figure to me. We're opening a gallery this year together! more news soon.
Proud to say i personally know this legend and have been mentored by him, also still cant belive it but i was gifted his Leica M3 personally by him as a tool to better my photography, Giles is an inspiration
Hi Neale just listened to your podcast with Giles and then found the link to your film. If the podcast wasn't enough the film has left me quite speechless. Moving and uplifting, thank you very much for shining a light on a remarkable photographer.
Thank you David, really kind words. I'm lucky enough to count Giles now as one of my closest friends, yet there is still a special reverence afforded whenever we talk photography.
Came on this channel cause of x-T3 research and discovered a hidden gem on UA-cam. Your documentaries are incredible source of unique inspiration. Thank you.
Vit, that's really very kind of you and I appreciate it. This doc in particular I'd been keen to make for a while since I befriended him just over a decade ago. His work and his ethics to what he does are certainly something I admire. Thanks for taking the time to drop by.
Very kind of you Mali. This will always be a film dear to me, because of our friendship of course, but also that I watched it play out in such a different way to my initial plan. He made the film, in every way. I just pressed record.
Thank you Michael. I spent a happy hour (coffee not alcohol) with him today funnily enough... just going through some of his new methods to work, new Lightroom settings and so on. It's nice to have a tech chat with people sometimes too (though I much prefer the art side). I mentioned your comment to him.
Loving your shows. I’ve only just started following your podcast on Spotify and then watching them on here afterwards. I can only liken them to binge watching a box set on TV. Thank you for making these, absolutely brilliant viewing and podcasts 👍
That was just fantastic. Brilliant photos and commentary by your good friend, Giles. And a brilliant video by you of all of it. It doesn't get better than this. Well done, Neale, well done. I've been listening to you and Kevin on the Fujicast podcast and, whilst I knew Kevin's work, I didn't know yours. More fool me. I will look at more of yours. You're really good!
A truly engaging ex[perience, wonderfully filmed & edited - why aren't these shorts being gobbled up by the main media??? Inspiring. Thank you for your work Mr James.
Thanks 'old patch' - awww it would sure be nice to see some of these shorts get a little more attention, especially given the skill set of those being interviewed. Glad you enjoyed it and I'm thankful for your comment.
Thank you Kevin. I've been lucky enough to sit for hours with this man and just talk about imagery until we can't remember how the context began. He is indeed an inspiring photographer. He works more locally to his home now and is embarking on a series of projects about the spaces around him.
Wonderful Neale, beautifully narrated and filmed. This is an important piece of work I held my breath until it finished for fear of missing a moment. Thank you.
Thank you Keith. Sounds like it was a breathing exercise atop a film. I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Giles is a superb photographer. Was an honour to do this.
In another lifetime i would be too. Either capturing the moment, or otherwise, living it, and being the one "captured", as in the victim of war. My grandmother's brother went thru Majdanek, and I've visited it plenty of times. Thank you for sharing and enlightening the audience.
Thank you Michael for your comment. It was a fascinating film for me. Spending time with Giles and hearing his honesty about photography and his place within it was a real thrill.
Where do you find the subjects to these short documentaries? A rhetorical question, as I’m fascinated by their stories, and just always want to know more. This is also down to your great film making, you allow these people to breath and talk and capture their personality through their story telling. Wonderful work.
Thanks for your kind comment. Giles is actually a friend, though we met through the medium of photography. I thought it strange how nobody had ever made a film about him. As for interview technique, yes, it's important to let people lead the way.
Thank you Kunal, appreciate the comment. He is a very considered and thought provoking photographer. I know he's not necessarily inclined to, but I wish he'd take his thoughts on tour and speak to courses in schools, colleges and unis, because his real coalface knowledge of making pictures is priceless.
I am assuming you're talking about Giles' work here. He is indeed a potent force in storytelling and I'm lucky enough to consider him a close friend. Thanks for your comment.
@@CobusMyburgh1985 Ah well I'm flattered sir. Thank you. It's comments like that, that provide the drive to want to move ahead further with these things. Thank you. :-)
Thank you Will. Very kind of you sir. I'm expanding with the new podcast series of course over on breathepictures.com and Giles will be 'repeated' there in radio version. It's incredibly rewarding when a photographer gifts me time to ask them questions. Giles' film was somewhat different of course. I pointed the camera... and he just went!
Muzak? Nice try. I think, or somewhat hope it fits the feeling. It never passes me that two peoples' sensory experiences can be so different. Vive la difference indeed.
"Don't NOT take pictures." That's a quote I will always carry with me from now on. Awesome film yet again, Neale!
And Giles is an awesome photographer to spend time with. He's not doing any photo presentations at the moment; I so wish he was though, he's one of the most engaging minds I know when it comes to talking about photography and conflict.
Fantastic film, amazing photography, left me wanting more

Powerful and inspirational film. It’s one I’m going to keep in my playlist because there is so much here, I need to watch it several times!
He is quite the photographer isn't he Jim? Thank you for your kind comment.
❤ I absolutely love this Giles. Such a deep and touching video. I'm hoping that one day I am good as you! ❤
The importance of the printed photograph, loved it.

Compelling in every aspect.

Powerful
I so love this presentation, but one small complaint, I’m very hard of hearing and the music at totally overwhelms the narration.
Thanks for the feedback.
Lovely work but the muzak is a bit melodramatic.
