  • I used my Nikon D800 and the 200-500mm telephoto zooms lens to do some bird photography at the Chickamauga Dam but before that, I put the 24-70 f/2.8G on and used my Kase filters to make a 61-second long exposure shot of the Ten Bridge railroad bridge over the Tennessee River. Join me for this satisfying morning of photography with my oldest full-frame digital camera.

Beautiful video Phil, you know I am very happy to see you with your 800 and 200-500. That's just a great working combo and you are proving it can be done. The tulip, nikons awesome colors. Loved the vulture coming in for a landing, and the heron shot was excellent . Thanks Phil for another great video.

I’ve always enjoyed your videos 👍 but this one in particular shows that we don’t need the very latest equipment to capture great images. It’s about the photographer not the equipment. 👏 Kudos!

The heron photo was my favorite, too.
Out here it's not hard to get "gross" photos of eagles snacking.

Lovely vid. Love how you prove that this lens camera combo still is very capable of capturing beautiful pictures.

Great to see you mastering that almost vintage camera in some photography disciplines. Except for birds in flight and action sports the camera performs great in your skilled hands. Thanks for sharing. / Per, Denmark

I’m with you. That house on top of the bridge has always piqued my interest. Great video!

I just like older gear. When colors were like they should be.

Thank you! I just bought a used D850. The greatest camera I never had...

I found it so cool to see you shooting the 200-500 at f/7.1. I found I got much better results when I was shooting in Alaska a week ago using that on my D850 rather than shooting at f/5.6 all the time with that lens. Especially with good light. Great video!

Thank you! I think I will be stopping it down like I did in this video a lot more in the future. I’ve gotten used to shooting at 7.1 with a canon zoom lens I have so I am used to that aperture lol 😂

Good ol D800 still firing! I loved my D800 when I had it (before it went swimming 😭) You got some great shots Phil.

Thank you! My only regret about buying my new used camera is that it might make this the last D800 video for a long time.

Nice shots! I liked the black vulture at the 8:10 mark the best.

Haha, taking casually 200mm heron shot, meanwhile I'm in full camo hiding in reeds with 700mm to get the same framing , sometimes working out. What a difference in wildlife approachability.

I'm pretty lucky to have the Chickamauga Dam 25 minutes from my home. The Heron there are used to sharing the bank with fisherman all day every day so they are approachable as long as you don't move too fast. Sometimes location is the most important thing about bird photography.

I still use the pocket 2, and I’m very happy with it. I’m sure I will get a pocket 3 someday, but not until my pocket 2 wears out.
