She is the best person I’ve seen do this role. It’s totally convincing. She’s not just someone with a good voice singing it. She made me believe she was that character.
So adorable. That's probably my favorite moment from any Broadway show ever, and to see Sutton Foster do it is priceless, even in a poorly-shot video 25+ years later.
I had the honor of first seeing Ms. (corrected) Foster two years after this, playing Eponine in the Les Mis tour when it came to Cincinnati in May 1999, with Millie still three years out. I shoulda known then . . .
I have no clue what it is about these old clips of musicals filmed on tape camcorders that give the recordings so much energy compared to their digital counterparts
I know. I was thinking ready for her to return to New York after her time as Reno. But for obvious reasons, she needed to. I do wish she was Reno again in the upcoming tour.
This is inspirational! My highschool drama club is doing Annie this year and one of my roles is literally the Star-to-be! Our choreography dosent look like the one here, but it is fun, and ive been enjoying my role! Im looking forward to our musical this year, and working hard to perfect and nail my solo, so I can sould as good as her!
AMAZING and thank you so much for sharing this rarity. Any chance you have footage of "You Make Me Happy" sung by Nell Carter? I've been searching for that clip for years and years. Thanks again!
Prophetic. Foster's name has been in lights many times since then. Not as good a rendition as Laurie Beechman (but how could anyone compare), but still mighty good.
Why does she remind me of Miranda Sings in this?! Haha. Not the singing, just the facial expressions. Especially during 'three bucks, two bags, one me'
This Annie revival was clearly before Millie. And Sutton was originally cast in the chorus of Mille and was given the lead when Erin Dilly dropped out prior to opening.
Kinda funny because Annie and Thoroughly modern Millie are set around the same time. Star to be is a young girl coming to New York for big dreams, same as Millie Dillmount. So they are basically the same person 😂🥲
NYC Just got here this morning Three bucks Two bags One me NYC I give you fair warning Up there In lights I'll be Go ask the Gershwins or Kaufman and Hart The place they love the best Though California pays big for their art Their fan mail comes addressed to NYC Tomorrow a penthouse That's way up high Tonight The "Y" Why not It's NYC
I’m doing my first play it’s Annie and I got this role wish me luck! I hope next year I get a bigger role for whatever play is next. If you see this in October 2024 or later you can ask me what role I got! Edit: I got two roles in my current play the reluctant dragon and also I had so much fun in annie
@@AbiS1018 Oh that could be. But it’s my experience with musicals in general. Not arguing with her singing capabilities by the way, she has an extraordinary voice.
@@eleo_b yes I get what you mean, I’m a musical theatre person but my dad hates musical theatre because he thinks they shout. It’s just the style of music. But yes in this case, this was before she had proper vocal training.
arguably the greatest video on youtube
you can tell she's having so much fun and totally using up every opportunity she has to savor her one minute
What a prophetic role. (:
Her voice is so powerful I cannot, she has such a traditional broadway style I adore it.!
She is the best person I’ve seen do this role. It’s totally convincing. She’s not just someone with a good voice singing it. She made me believe she was that character.
She slayed and KILLED this small role. No role is small
Funny how life imitates art.
Yes! Love her

@@hannahmathers8407 cause the role is called Star To Be and now she is a star!
This could have been her Millie audition
So cute how it's literally the Millie opening lmao
THAT BELT! 😍
This was all foreshadowing.
It really was 😂😂
The great Laurie Beechman had her Broadway debut in that same part I believe. You can hear her very unique voice on the original cast recording.
I bet the same happened with Ashley Blanchett. I dunno
original Annie Andrea McArdle thought the world of Laurie Beechman and spoke at her memorial service.
To me this is the closest to equalling Laurie
She really was a Star To Be!

The original Annie (McArdle) played her too!
“What they’re forgetting is that was 1922.”
Now this is 2022!!!
Amazing. She's so goofy in the best possible way!
I have no clue what it is about these old clips of musicals filmed on tape camcorders that give the recordings so much energy compared to their digital counterparts
I this makes me so happy. My first musical was Annie and night two I was Star To Be. Just goes to show, humble beginnings. Gotta start somewhere
Wow! THIS IS A GEM! Thank you so much for sharing!
Wow!! The lady has it all. And right now she is absolute toast of London in "Anything Goes". In fact, we really don't want to give her back!!!
I know. I was thinking ready for her to return to New York after her time as Reno. But for obvious reasons, she needed to.
I do wish she was Reno again in the upcoming tour.
Wow, now that's a belt..........

Nice response, thank you. Glad you enjoyed.
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 DO YOU HAVE THE WHOLE VIDEO? i'L LOVE TO WATCH. Ups sorry about the caps. Thanks for sharing
The most talented beautiful broadway star in history--and it started right here!
That Beechman legacy....the bar is so high for such a tiny part. 🤩🤩🤩
THANK YOU!!! Been hoping for footage of this performance!
Glad you found it--thanks.
I love the 1999 film because it includes this song.
with original Annie Andrea McArdle making a cameo in this role
I auditioned for this part at my local theater just because of Sutton Foster. Small role, but would be great to say I played the same role as her haha
OMGGG THE DESCRIPTION THOOO
constantly thinking of this video

This is like the beginning of Thoroughly Modern Millie😂 I love Sutton so much!
I got this part in my musical
Same
This is why she is a star...
Going to be cheesy here, but "Look at where you are! Look at where you started!"
YESSSS HAMILTON!!!!

the fact that you're alive is a miracle
just stay alive and that’ll be enoughh 🥺
I have to sing this for auditions today. Wish me luck!!
Good luck!
Kaitlyn Hert good luck !!!! I got the part for this my show is in December !!!
it's so funny because she looks about 15 but she was in her 20's. greatest video on youtube. her facial expressions are the best. and the vibrato :)
It's another excellent song.🙂
Wow... how prophetic
WOW!!!!! HIRE THAT GIRL!!!
;)
AMAZING and thank you so much for sharing this rarity. Any chance you have footage of "You Make Me Happy" sung by Nell Carter? I've been searching for that clip for years and years. Thanks again!
She kind of looks like Ginnifer Goodwin here.
I think she looks like Carey Mulligan ! :)
That's what I thought when I saw the thumbnail! :P
Timothy Robert I'm actually sort of surprised that Ginny hasn't been in Annie yet. I think she would be perfect for Grace.
HOLY HECK YOU RIGHT
I though exactly the same!
Put a thums up if she looks amazing
Love this!

Whoever did it on the 30th Anniversary recording rivals Beechman's imo
I am playing the star t be in my Annie Jr play at school (I have practice today)!!!!
Hey, I can say I've played the same role as Sutton Foster!
My idol
Why does she remind me of Miranda Sings in this?! Haha. Not the singing, just the facial expressions. Especially during 'three bucks, two bags, one me'
yes!!! i think it's the eyebrow raising on the accents? so so funny to me. and weird, like was Sutton the original Miranda, or what?
She looks like my old kindergarten teacher
i play her in my show!!!
Shes wonderful.
Legend
watching this video religiously bc I got star to be and I sound like a dying goat
Good luck, and let Sutton show you the way.
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 thanks
Update: opening night was yesterday and I did pretty good.
And a star she became :)
To be honest Star To Be and Millie Dilmount are the same characters.
i always thought that too!! :)
Or Peggy Sawyer in 42nd Street
I just got a call back for this part! Wish me luck❤
EDIT: I got it!
Who's here just because Groffsauce told them to watch this
haha same
I'm being the star to be in Annie Jr for our school operetta!
why did it take so long to get lead? she's clearly a star here!
I think she might have been Millie before this, but I guess she wasn't technically cast for that one, just stumbled on it
C Pamperin this is 1997 it's in the description. this is the only part the star to be is in x
I meant Millie from Thoroughly Modern Millie, sorry I wasn't clear
This Annie revival was clearly before Millie. And Sutton was originally cast in the chorus of Mille and was given the lead when Erin Dilly dropped out prior to opening.
Omg she’s sooo cute 😂
After she says "Why not?!" She looks exactly like her brother 😂
My professor's wife is good friends (from High School) with her.
Attsa my gal (& in my 1st Broadway show too!) on the stage at the Martin Beck (now the Al Hirschfelf) theatre on west 45th st! How prophetic indeed!

Haha, what is she doing with her face? So cool to get to see her at this stage in her career. So much talent, but still lacking some control.

Thank you so much for this info. I just checked out the adorable Jonathan and Sutton with Seth and Jonathan did indeed refer to this video.
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 No problem :) Thanks for posting it!
Now she is old enough to do Mame!
Didn't she just play the same part in Annie LIVE on TV. It gives credit to some one else, but that's Sutton playing Star to Be once again!
McKenzie Kurtz is credited for this role.

Why is she so loud??
"A Star to Be"? Rumour has it she's secretly a divorced Mum who has lied about her age to get back into the publishing industry . . !
@pinsvinnn - I see what you did there! ;)

Aurora Spiderwoman, I just sent you a private message. I hope you get it!
She's very good. But she's no Laurie Beechman.

I got cast as this wtf I don't want to do a solo
