Hi Katrina, this is the first time I've seen one of your videos. For drawing I have 2 favorite tools. I love graphite pencils. Just pure solid graphite, with a plastic wrap (like the wood around the lead of a regular pencil) you can nap peel off a bit as your pencil shrinks. Sharpening is usually done by rubbing the side of the graphite back and forth quickly on scrap paper, turning it now and then, until you have the point you want. I like the #s 4, 6, and 8. I love how I can use my fingers or a blending stump. I think of graphite as sort of being between a regular drawing pencil and charcoal. So much cleaner than charcoal. My 2nd favorite tool is a cattle marker. I get them from farmer's co-op. My first drawing teacher introduced me to these. They are generally about 4" long an inch in diameter. They are oil paint sticks that are used to humanely mark cattle, instead of branding. They are similar to artists oil sticks, but they are more oily whereas the artist one tends to be more dry and crumbly. Last time I bought these they were still only about $1.25 each and will pay much longer than the regular ones. They can be a little messy. I often wear latex gloves when using these but they don't blend as easily with gloves as with fingers.
I’ve never used Cattle Markers! I might have to try them. I had a long love for charcoal but returned to my original love (pencil) a few years ago so your graphite pencils sound like the perfect blend of the two. How do the numbers coincide with traditional pencil ranking (HB, F, 2B, etc)?
