- The DLR has a new branch - between Canning Town and Stratford International with new stations at Star Lane and Abbey Road as well. So w went out to explore the new line and have a look at the new stations ...
10 years later, Eurostar has still not recognised the potential of Stratford as an area, which has gone from a zone 3 to an upgraded zone 2/3.
Stratford now has TFL, the FCA as its main residents and is the best connected station in East London.
It was the busiest tube and railway station in 2020 due to the lockdown and pandemic, but this only proves that Stratford continues to grow no matter the circumstance.
Now that the Elizabeth line has officially opened, Stratford will leapfrog other tube/railway stations as we return to normality and await the latest stats on the list of busiest stations for 2022.
I just hope that HS2 doesn't ignore this anymore.

In the intervening years those stations have become quite busy. And Abbey Road now has punning signs telling people who to get to the Abbey Road where the famous recording studio is.

I've seen the Stratford International area grow from how it was in 2014/5 (reasonably developed but clearly still all new builds) to how it is now (bustling area with people who actually live there and stuff to actually do), but it's cool to see it even further before when everything was still under construction for the Olympics.

I used Abbey Road a few times in 2012 when I was a contractor helping to fit out some of the Olympic Park buildings. On more than one occasion, I was approached by confused tourists looking for the recording studios and the famous zebra crossing.
That must being before they put up the poster, letting people know that they are at the wrong station.

what were their reactions when they were informed that is on the other side of the city?
I remember getting extremly excited for stratford international thinking that france and belgium would come to stratford but only southeastern express came :(

Eurostar should be getting some competition in the next couple of years, but they probably won't have capacity at St Pancras to handle it all, so I think the new operator will have to use Stratford International.

0:26 The lower level platform belonged to the North London Line and was last used by Silverlink before that service came to an end. Silverlink ran their services from North Woolwich to Richmond, so just after Stratford Station on the Northbound i.e. at 3:00 where the Jubilee Line is, instead of what is now (the DLR) turning right to get to the international, the rails would previously veer to the left and connect to the part of the network which then goes onto Hackney Wick. So I suppose, it was just easier for them to convert the disused stretch of NLL from North Woolwich to Stratford as part of the DLR extension to the international station hence the reason why you see this lower level and upper level DLR in both Canning Town and Stratford.
Good to watch this in 2020, as I had a reason to catch a high-speed train from Stratford International to Canterbury West back in 2010. At that time, the entrance to Stratford International was a building site, and you had to get a bus from Stratford Station and back again from Stratford International. 👍🏾
If it's Tuesday, it must be London. And the urge to do something silly overwhelms me. I commute every Tuesday from City Airport DLR to my office near Green Park. Recently, my flight had been rescheduled to arrive about 30 minutes later, which now leaves me in the thick of Morning Rush. 30 mins earlier wasn't too bad. The queues for inbound Jubilee trains at Canning Town are long and it's cold, so now I take one going the other way to Stratford, not get off, and at least have a seat.
Next time I think I'll try staying on the DLR until Stratford International avoiding Cramming Town, then the high speed train to St Pancras, finally either the Jubilee Line to Green Park or the Piccadilly Line to Piccadilly Circus, whichever is less miserable, as my office is somewhere between the two.

I took this line in June 2012, on a tour just before the Olympic Games. By then, Westfield was packed and the station very busy. I had no idea Westfield was so new then.

if you had walked walked a bit down abbey road you would have seen the depot for the jubilee lines at Stratford. might not have been many trains there but at night it's always full
Your video reminds me of connecting from the subway to the elevated F & G Train (Culver Line) at the 4th Av-9th St. station complex in Brooklyn, New York City. The climb up to the G Train platforms from the subway is massive, because you start below street level and end up over 80 feet above the ground, the largest climb on the NYC system, because the F & G trains cross a canal just before the station. Instead of a massive staircase, or handy escalator, one must use a very long rectangular helix style ramp, and the walk is like no other. The only time I have done it, I had no idea how high I would be climbing -- I just kept seeing how high I was getting by looking out some very dirty and old windows. So your transfers are definitely inconvenient, but they can't be as bad at that one. Remember to only transfer from the F & G to the R in Brooklyn, and go some other way rather than go from the R subway to the F & G elevated.
Clearly what they need there is a sign warning people that the climb is equivalent to a 15-story building.
The station is Smith and 9th Street and on a trip to New York I had to transfer from a bus from Red Hook to the Subway and I was amazed by the height of the bridge. Interesting fact that a scene close to the end of Goodfellas was filmed around the corner and you can see the elevated railway. I only noticed the next time I watched the movie and recognised it.

we recently rode the DLR to Stratford Int'l to go for a terrific walk and to bird watch in the Olympic park area and wander round the east village which was full of folk wandering around like us. a nice vibe.
Always interesting to me how interconnected London is.
I think, the appropriate name to call Stratford International would be, Straford City. E20 is Stratford City anyway, which is where the station is situated at, and E15 is just Stratford, so there's hardly any confusions there.

Yes but since there was insufficient space for simple JLE / DLR cross platform interchange so locating the DLR directly above the JLE also made for the best possible interchange solution with the fewest flights of stairs to negotiate.
Whats a shame is that the JLE & NLL were not built with 'same direction' cross platform interchange at Canning Town (with DLR above them both) & 'opposite direction' cross platform interchange at West Ham, thereby covering all interchange moves.

The new dlr is coming out of an extension in Stratford Intranational from the hs1 and Westfield Stratford city was built!

Abbey Lane/Road was prone flooding years ago via the back rivers which have now locked catalysed and managed to prevent flooding...
It is still quiet. My train really emptied out heading north and filled up at Stratford Regional heading south. Lots of people are now using the West Ham platforms, as well as Abbey Road and Star Lane.

Being a local since 1986 they should have called Abbey Road station on the dlr.. Abbey Bridge Road ... Witch locally its always been known has

I've been there almost exactly one year after the Olympics and it has been almost as quiet as in this video. I hope that changed, otherwise it is a big failure.
NeoDerGrose my sister lived by the station after the Olympics for a year and would walk down to Stratford Station instead of Stratford International as more trains.
rachelcann165 As far as I know you have to pay extra for the trains to St Pancras. But you could still take the DLR to Stratford Station instead of walking through the shopping center.

But Stratford High Street is located on the site of Stratford Market station, closed in 1957.
I've been there last year and it's still not very busy. At least it hasn't been when I was there. Maybe when High speed 2 is in operation we will see the original concept of international trains calling at Stratford International and then passing by St Pancras on there was to Birmingham or Manchester.

The new branch of the DLR is not new because used to be part of the North London line when star Lane and Abbey Road when not there trains did not go to Stratford International there were only services to Richmond and North Woolwich but these services stopped until 2011 when the DLR has got the Stratford International
Victoria, did you know that no International train has ever stopped at Stratford International? They should really change the name.
The reason why they axed Eurostars from stopping at Stratford International was because, ministers argued that, it made perfectly sense if the Eurostar went directly to St. Pancras International, and then, for those who wanted to get Stratford International, can do so by taking HS1 which was (and still is) a 3-minutes train ride away.

Eyyyy Stratford international is the only Train station I go to for one reason only which is the parkour park that just round the corner
I wish they would change the name of the Flipping Station to just Stratford as there has never been a Single Eurostar train stop there which was the original intention.
I used it yesterday because as per usual my Eurostar train from Paris went speeding past it and I had to take the High speed train at St Pancras just to get back to.... Stratford Not International. 🙄🙄🙄🙄
Lots of people from the east get the Eurostar from there its just not every train stops there. only a few don't stop it is very busy due to Stratford being the most highly population grossed area in London

I think Stratford International station should be renamed to Stratford High-speed Station.
Or they have secret plans for a line with the airports or future airports or future airports renovations! After the olympics the area around the stadium the area is giving to investers, with Lodon having the wish to make Stratford full of a international buisness center. Rumour has it that Chinees are in talks with Stratford. The 'Olympic stadion' is now called the 'London stadium' with huge names having concerts. The stadium and area must have an International appreciation.
