Very helpful - thanks. It would be great to include something about medical costs and/or insurance. Especially since that's one of the main reasons we're considering leaving the U.S..

Thank you for watching Pat and for your feedback! I have on my to do list, a YT video explaining all things Medical so make sure to stay tuned! It is hard to include it in cost of living as there are a lot of variables depending on the individual, however, I can assure you it is WAY less than the US in all ways (unless you have Medicare or Medicaid).

I don't have a video about buying a house in Coronado but it's a great suggestion for one! Prices are all over the map depending on what you are looking for- right now most buyers have a $250,000-$300,000 budget and there are a handful of great options in that price range. Thanks for watching! Panama has around 25 protected jobs foreigners are unable to work in, however, apart from that, there is a lot of opportunity. There is also a lot room for innovation and many markets with very little competition. If you decide to come for a visit or to make the move, send me a message and I'm happy to help with the logistics:)

When I hit the bell to get notifications, it won’t let me because when you upload your videos you check that they are “made for kids.” Even though they are kid friendly, when you check that before uploading UA-cam will put various restrictions on your videos. For example, they disabled comments on one of your other videos that I watched and, like I said above, I can’t get notifications because this video is “made for kids.” Just check that your video is not made for children and subscribers will be able to get notifications, if that is what you want. Your videos are helpful! Thank you.

A friend of mine has a very respectable modern 2 BR apartment in Stratford New Jersey for $804/month, no pool but nice courtyard and laundry and the train station is a block away. Yes it's 35 minutes from the beach. Food seems to be a bit cheaper in Stratford New Jersey. I would say that maybe people should be looking at Stratford New Jersey, except that I am from Panama and my question is: What exactly do you mean by an "American Lifestyle"? I find that many of the Americans immigrating to Panama are looking to think out of the box a bit and get away from their "American Lifestyle" a bit. Otherwise, why would they be moving to Panama?
I think that a big factor is that the cost of Education in Panama is very low. You can get a bachelors degree for about $3K in Panama. How much is it in the U.S.? And why are so many American riddled with student loans? Another big factor is healthcare. In the U.S. healthcare is tied to employment. If you're out of a job, you usually don;t have healthcare. If you break your leg, good luck. If you have a chronic condition and your're unemployed or under employed in one of those jobs that does not offer benefits, healthcare can bankrupt you, at least for the grand majority of Americans. And if this statistic is true, then, what exactly is an "American Lifestyle" for the median wage earner in the U.S. if one were to indeed take a representative cross-section of the U.S. population? Then, let's consider, how much does it cost to visit the doctor in Panama, even as an uninsured non-resident? Say, as a tourist? How much do X-Rays cost? An MRI? Surgeries? Say, at a good hospital such as Santo Tomás, the hospital where I was born and had my tonsils taken out. How much does it cost per day to stay at the hospital? Or for an ambulance? These are true cost factors, for most people, that is. In the U.S. these are factors that can make or break most people.
Even those who are in the U.S who enjoy medical insurance, how much must they pay for it to get the kind of comparative cost for the level of care they would receive in Panama (without insurance)? How many people in Panama go bankrupt due to medical reasons in comparison to the U.S.?
When the pandemic hit the U.S., its citizens received a $1.2K cheque in the form of a relief package to help tide them over which quickly evaporated. In Panama citizens were granted a 90 day moratorium on debt. This moratorium consisted of a forgiveness or postponement of mortgage or rent payments, cellphone, internet and utilities. From what I could see. The result in the U.S. was mass evictions and homelessness, loss of medical coverage due to the soaring unemployment rate, since healthcare is tied to employment. I did not see the mass evictions in Panama and actual bankruptcies were far fewer. Some businesses did close, but relatively much fewer than in the U.S. and those that closed in Panama, much fewer of those than in the U.S. suffered actual bankruptcies.
So, for the actual cross-section of the U.S. population (the median income) or say, even a retiree with a $1,200 fixed income in the U.S., should the repatriate and immigrate to Panama, their former "American Lifestyle" would actually improve quite significantly, and actually go up quite a few notches in lifestyle.
Take, for example, this very recent video that came out only 3 days ago. A testimonial of am American Immigrant in Panama who is now able to live a carefree lifestyle in Panama on their modest fixed-income retirement, and still have extra money to spare. And no, they are not living in a straw hut or an hovel. ua-cam.com/video/zKy8PdLTrZQ/v-deo.html ...on the showcasing of the apartment she lives in for $350 apartment in the Republic of Panama. She says the reason she got it for $350 is because it wasn't furnished. But at $350/m, you can certainly afford to furnish it! ....and do an whole lot much more, even if your fixed income American Social Security retirement was only $1,000/month.
What is the median Social Security retirement in the U.S.? According to the U.S. Census, the median income for men in the U.S. is $57,456 for men and $47,299 for women. So, when we realistically speak of "American Lifestyle", these are the true numbers. So, to trade apples with apples, and not oranges, what would be a comparable value in the Panamanian economy for the same standard of living for that cross-section of the median American Population truly living the "American Lifestyle"? I did not make these numbers up, these are from the U.S. Census. Also, deduct from the American Lifestyle that they must pay extraordinarily for healthcare and education, and transportation, communications, insurance, etc. These must be factored in when analyzing this median income wage earner American Lifestyle person.
"The average monthly Social Security payment for retirees was $1,513" (source: U.S. News). In the U.S., in most places, that is hardly enough to make ends meet, scraping by. In Panama one would lead a rather comfy lifestyle.
So, perhaps, instead of referring to the "American Lifestyle" it may help the American immigrant to Panama to consider what their life would be life assuming a "Panamanian Lifestyle" with the same limited funds they would otherwise have and how far their dollar would stretch given their new set of circumstances. Perhaps now, even as the average or median Joe Schmoe or Jane Doe in the U.S., where in the U.S. they might have felt forced to flip burgers till the age of 85, in Panama they would actually be able to retire 10 years earlier than 10 years later and actually enjoy a significant portion of their lives whilst they are still in good health and able bodied to do so. To those who can frame things in this perspective I say, Welcome to Panama! Where there's something for everyone. You're in for a treat! Make yourselves at home. Yes, Panama does accept American refugees. And you won;t suffer a stigma for being an immigrant. Enjoy! Live long, and prosper!

@@fanfare100 Thank you for watching and your detailed and informative reply. You make a great point- I have always used the term "American Lifestyle" as many understand it to mean- similar amenities, high-speed internet, entertainment, modern housing, etc.- it's really a term to ensure we are not as you say "living in a straw hut or hovel." But I love the "Panamanian lifestyle" as well and as you outlined, there are many reasons to consider living in this beautiful country. Take care:)
