Once MLB decides to not enforce the rules any player that _does_ follow the rules is putting themselves at a competitive disadvantage for no reason. They're mostly mad they're watching the leverage they use to get great numbers and huge contracts is slipping through their fingers. On top of that it's openly eating at their legacies. It's this generations steroid scandal. Instead of homerun hitters, it's untouchable pitchers. And they know they're getting caught in the center of it. Hence getting desperate when asked or pushed about it and their performance since the change and drop in rpm.

Those Ohtani stats are a bit misleading. He's had 4 starts since the crackdown, in three of them he pitched 6 or more innings while allowing 2 or fewer runs. The other one was his worst start of the year where he just didn't have it and got blown up for 7 runs in less than 1 inning. That is seriously inflating all his numbers. Outside of that one start, he's been just as good since the substance checks as he was before.

@Zack Newton ehhhh you say that, but you've never thrown 100 mph. I threw low 90s, and believe me, I wanted as much grip as possible to control my pitches. So yeah.... it is an excuse when the MLB is trying more and more to make it that much harder to hold onto the ball. Back when I last played ball in 07, foreign substance was as strict as it is today. You could get away with a little more. And it's simply a control thing. Without the grip, throwing a baseball at your max velo is extremely difficult.

On top of that you said the baseball is getting harder to grip, like the mlb is changing the baseball lmao. like buddy, if you cant grip the fucking ball while throwing hard then you arent meant to throw at those speeds. Like based on your argument, your max velo is just how hard you can throw the ball in general. not how hard you can throw it accurately. thats how i can tell you arent a pitcher. max velo isnt how hard you can throw a ball, its how hard you can throw a controlled baseball. if aroldis chapman just chucked the ball as hard as he could he could prob clock at over 105

I suspect that absent foreign substances, any pitcher's spin rate for a given pitch should vary relatively little growing or declining in terms of several seasons only. If experience, age or physical condition was the predominate factor, then spin rate changes should be predictable and roughly uniform across the league and over time.

Quick maths check, Cole’s fastball spin in the month of July (used 2019 when he was peaking) to account for weather and implementation of checks is down -6.8% 2021 vs 2019. Breaking balls spin rate is down -2.4%. He’s threw 2.9% more pitches and one fewer hit. Hitters could be adjusting to the new movement. What would be interesting to see is what it this meets statistical significance. Depending on whether you break this down by pitch type, it’s borderline. Will also be good once we get more data of course.

The substance helps control as well and decreases the chance of balls slipping and hitting the batter. I feel there is a lack of foresight here and if it didn't have the stigma of being a "foreign/illegal substance" that the MLB arbitrarily assigned, it would be a no brainer for the substance to be used for both batter and pitcher safety. The only reason it is deemed as cheating/bad is because the MLB said so. But looking at the big picture I struggle to see how it is actually bad for the game.

I think it's a combo deal. Pitchers that throw lots of sliders and split finger pitches are the highest casualty because the amount of pressure built up in more of the tendons rather than the skeletal structure. Those pitches are being thrown with more effectiveness and power which will cause more damage than throwing a fastball.
Then you have pitchers quiting cold turkey. Your body gets used to throwing with the substance, or something with a certain amount of friction, then the body has to change and the energy release is completely different to the point of breaking down faster. Think of it like a car. Have a hot tune with a strong transmission, then switch to a weaker or differently geared transmission with the same engine tune you are going to break stuff or wear them down faster.

My theory is because everyone is using it batters were trying to adjust to the high spin rate,so it was difficult to hit degrom's pitches because he had lower spin rate compared to those guys like they are looking for a higher pitch but degrom's isn't as high as they are accustomed to while facing other pitchers. Whoa whoa whoa! A pitcher, a person who gets paid to throw a ball, hurts himself... throwing a ball. Now we are being manipulated to feel sympathy for him? Get out of here. I understand that some sympathy for pitchers needs to be on the table because the rule ENFORCEMENT (not rule change) is rather abrupt, but don't make me feel sad for a guy who can't do what he was hired to do. I don't like seeing guys get hurt, heck, I have a relative who should have been pitching for my favorite team at the major league level, but this is life. Some of us play by the rules and we expect others to do the same. If you don't want to agree to the rules, or worse, you do agree, and still go on to cheat, GTFO. Do you know how many great 3rd basemen the Yankees could have had and how many families those salaries could have gone to had A-rod not been giving so many chances to redeem himself? Think of those who didn't get the chance because a cheater sat in the limited number of proverbial seats of success. Try and convince me that I should feel bad for somebody who doesn't tell their competition that they are breaking the rules to succeed. Go for it. I dare you. I have yet to find somebody that can convince me and I've been open ever since Lance Armstrong got dinged.
Have the courage to be a good fellow. I want to love sports but it's getting harder and harder with the acceptance of cheaters and justification for immoral behavior. I struggle to watch and cheer for teams these days because of how often there is either a lack of or complete absence of contrition. It's a simply solution that is apparently very difficult... stop excusing bad behavior. Get the cheaters out of the meritocracy and maybe punish them by removing them from play and redistributing the salary to those likely to have been displaced by said cheater. With contrition and some time, let them come back to the game as a commentator, or coach, or consultant, etc. but don't let somebody who broke the oath of sportsmanship continue to sully the game that means so much to both young and old. It's pretty clear Pete Rose cheated and had he been penitent he would likely been shown some degree of forgiveness. It's clear that a generational hypocrisy has formed and even encouraged. Tribalism is real and it should be fought, less we lose our joy in watching a GAME that lets us all escape the sad reality that life is not fair. We can win... in some ways... on some days... unless the cheaters get the pay.
