- I'll say it: this is a better Frankenstein sequel than Bride, and it all comes down to Bela.
If you're looking for a "review" in the traditional sense, then let me just say I love this movie. This video, however, is a "review" in the literal sense (using the Miriam-Webster definition "a retrospective view or survey"), in that I'm going over the history of the film and its place in sci-fi cinema history.
In other words, please stop commenting on how my videos aren't what you consider "reviews."

You should have mentioned actor Kenneth Mars in Mel Brooks' "Young Frankenstein" doing the take off of Lionel Atwell's one armed police officer more than Peter Sellers in "Dr. Strangelove" .
I was thinking the same thing, I'm surprised it didn't at least get mentioned.
If only because you can't help laughing when you see his scene since you're filling in the gags in your head
That’s right-Kenneth Mars portrayal of the police inspector is a hilarious and moving homage to Lionel Atwill’s performance.
When you said in the last review “Sherlock Holmes vs. a monster” I drew a blank. I kept looking at other Sherlock Holmes movies. Im ashamed of myself, because this is also my favorite Frankenstein sequel! Great review, as usual!
Thinking about Karloff and Lugosi, I have to make my recommendation the Val Lewton-produced "The Body Snatchers." In my opinion, this contains Karloff's best performance of his career, and while Lugosi's role was smaller, it was pivotal to the plot. And Lugosi was terrific. Also, Karloff and Lugosi share a fantastic scene together, that ends badly for Lugosi's character. This entire film is one of my favorites. I'm not sure you could call it horror, there's nothing supernatural in it. It's more pyschological-disturbing, than pure horror, but it's moody and atmospheric and pushes all the right buttons.
White Zombie, best Bela. Son is notable for the amazing sets as well as the cast. Love this classic
I like this sequel as well, one of the things that I remember is the interior set of the castle (you have a brief clip at 2:23) and just the starkness and weird angles and shadows was quite effective in setting the mood. I actually don't think Donnie Dunagan ruins the movie, as a matter of fact, I think his scenes are just corny and temporarily break the tension. The rest of the cast really give outstanding performances. I'm glad Lee gave Lugosi the chance to shine in this film.
That was not young Mr. Dunagan's worst acting example. The worst was when he was introduced and he yells out "Well, HELLO!"
We should blame the director more than the child actor though. It was Lee's job to prevent that jarring bit from being in the movie--maybe give the boy something better to say.
It is a good movie though. The hollowed out house with a barely there staircase, the acting, the characters, and the dialog were good. I believe this is the move that has the Baron saying to crowd at the train station: leave the dead to bury the dead or something equally appropriate.
A mystery greater that the Secret of Life is the mystery of how a child, with a very American-accented mother and a very Trans-Atlantic-accented father, ended up with such a Down By The Bayou accent.
An underrated addition to the Universal horror franchise. Probably long overdue for revisit.
I was honestly delighted when I came across this classic, late at night on BBC2 when I was a child. Prior to this film I had come to accept that sequels are just cheap cash-ins. Bride of Frankenstein helped cement this change of heart even further. It seems that not all sequels are "Created" equal. Thank you for another wonderful 'review'. Er... Peter Sellers in Dr Strangelove? Surely Kenneth Mars is more worthy of mention.
I can't take this movie seriously after seeing Young Frankenstein. Even the kid in this movie looks like a young Gene Wilder.
I like Bride more, but I Son was the first Universal Horror Film I can recall seeing, so it will always have a special place in my heart. Also, Lugosi's best performance was in SOS Coast Guard.
Igor was the finest performance Lugosi made. I believe even above Dracula. They all put 110 percent into it. Lugosi's performance as Igor and the Black Cat is my favorite.
I think this is Lugosi‘s best “character” acting, but he never equalled himself in Dracula. His charisma is not only the best thing about Dracula, but is exponentially better than anything else in Dracula. As for Son of… It’s somewhat long & repetitive, but has a great look, and Lugosi‘s great performance.

The great thing about Frankenstein movies is that I can cover them as sci-fi movies if I want, so i don’t have to wait until October!
Young Frankenstein is a loving and superb satire which makes it difficult to revisit the classic series of films. The artificial arm bit retroactively becomes hilarious. I have to pretend that film was never made while watching the originals.
I never quite agreed with making the monster mute; he talks a lot in the book.
What struck me most about "Son of Frankenstein" is the complicated relationship between Atwill's police officer and Frankenstein. I don't think he's so much "slow on the uptake" as very reluctant to believe what he knows is true, perhaps especially since everyone in the village predicted it. Imagine stroutly defending a newcomer to your town, in public, only to have that benefit of the doubt betrayed. The two are quite fond of one another and Atwill's "I am wearing my hat, sir!" is one of the most painful lines in cinema as it heralds that friendship falling apart as Atwill puts his duty to his village above his affection for Frankenstein. Everyone does well in this film, and I like to pretend that the kid is a bit of an irritating brat, making the portrayal perfect.
Lugosi does very well here, but my favorite role for him is from The Black Cat.
The story about Karloff going to the hospital while wearing his make-up reminds me of the Mummy Daddy episode of the TV show Amazing Tales.

It's a great image, but unfortunately Sara Karloff has dispelled the myth that her father rushed to hospital in full makeup several times. She said that they never would've allowed him off set looking like the Monster, and there's a photo of Karloff in a perfectly respectable suit standing over a new-born Sara. I can't blame you for believing it, though, it's a myth that's hard to bust! I believed it for a long time too.
I just watched Son of Frankenstein for the first time today, and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The first two movies are my favourite of all time, and I wondered if this film was going to change the legacy of the first two too much, but it was very good, despite being different from the first films. Don’t be too hard on Donny, he did go on to voice Bambi. Also Lionel Atwill was later to play Moriarty to Rathbone’s Holmes.

Thank you so much for this informative video. This movie is such a phenomenal work of art, in my opinion. I watch it every Halloween. I love it so very much. If any of the old movies edge it out for my favorite, it's Adventures of Robin Hood, which also features the amazing Basil Rathbone. I have a huge poster from that movie (Robin Hood) - a shot during the famous Rathbone-Flynn sword duel - and if you you look close at Errol Flynn's hand you can see a bandage between his thumb and forefinger, no doubt from wear and tear of the intense rehearsals for that greatest of sword fights. I've always found that touching somehow. Anyway, U.G., if you'll forgive me, may I suggest some of my music which has always been influenced by horror movies: Rosetta West - Deeper Than Magic (labyrinth version). Thank you so much again.
I remember seeing this for the first time as a kid and even then I thought Lugosi stole the show!
I love this film too. Fortunately, Donnie Dunagan (who later voiced young Bambi) isn't in it very much. Favourite Bela Lugosi performance? I'm going to say his Dracula in "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" ("What we need is young blood... and brains".)

It's rare when I'm shocked by a film review. And you managed to pull it off twice here.
Firstly, going with Peter Sellers instead of the glaringly obvious Kenneth Mars from Young Frankenstein.
Secondly, taking arms against a sea of popular opinion to accurately state that this movie is better than Bride.
Although, I prefer the visuals of Bride, the wrap around with Byron and the Shelleys is unnecessary, ultimately
going nowhere. And the monster speaking was a poor choice. Karloff was 100% right about that one.
But my favorite Uni monster film is Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein. So I may be way off here...
Just think, without "Son of Frankenstein" we might never have gotten "Young Frankenstein".
*What a disappointment Boris Karloff... I always hated the idea of the monster having regressed into a speaking state and this is due to his best interpreter, what a shame! Did he not know that in the book his film was based on the monster spoke and was very eloquent??*

I think movie sequels have been a thing since the beginning of Hollywood. The want to cash in on a previously successful film.
