- Geiko Miehina and Maiko Fukunae from the Miyagawa Ward of Kyoto, Japan, answer questions made by the public at the Kyoto Fan Event Maiko Spring 2012.
These amazing artists shared with us some of the secrets of their daily life, and at the same time, showed us their human side.
Don't forget to see the end of the video, as it was Geiko Miehina's birthday, and we all sang happy birthday to her! What a nice surprise!
To see the subtitles hit the CC button!!!

I love to see them laugh.... They always look pretty and lovely.... And so humble...
So Japanese. Very beautiful, clean, perfectly composed... and yet so distant. Cool stuff.
I think that Fukunae San appreciates your support and she is working hard as a Maiko, and probably would love to become a Geiko as well. Thank you for participating in our event!
Fukunae-san and Miehina-san are beautiful!
No problem. On the event we had an interpreter, but for the video, I thought that it would be nice to leave their original voices and add subtitles.
I am very happy to know you find this video interesting! One of the reasons why we wanted to hold this event was to share with the people of other countries the culture of the Geiko and Maiko of Kyoto.
Omg shes only 24! I thought she is in 40's already because of her aura and attitude is really lady like :o
I'm so incredibly grateful this channel exists. The world of the Geisha is beyond fascinating and it's amazing we have this opportunity to see even a small glimpse of it like this. I hope I will be able to go to Kyoto and see a performance one day! I'm curious though, is there someone who makes the makeup for them or do they make it themselves? Do they wear it everyday? Who decides whether or not a girl can become a Maiko?
Hi! You can activate the subtitles by clicking on the "cc" button!
Hi! The Kanji for Geiko and Maiko, is not the regular 「子」, is this one「妓」. So the correct way to write it would be 「芸妓」と「舞妓」. Thank you very much for watching! :D
KyotoFan, thank tou so much for uploading. : )
Miehina is a sweetie, and Fukunae so cute. I loved to see them so relaxed like this, talking and smiling. I love both kimonos.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh they're so pretty!!! i can't get over how dignified and graceful they are!!!
Fukunae-san looks so cute and Miehina-san looks so gorgeous! Maikos had cute and sweet looks whereas Geishas had gorgeous and mature looks.
Hi! Yes, you have to turn on the subtitles by hitting the subtitles or "CC" button.
i've been watching your channel and i think this is the most perfect video about maiko and geiko i've ever seen! thanks so much for trying to show the world about a culture that sometimes we can think is over ^^.. Greetings from Chile!
Fascinating and Enchanting. Preserving the Arts. Worth their weight in gold and then some. Traditional Dance. Music. Song. Presentation. I need a trip to Kyoto, Japan!
If you visit Kyoto there are many opportunities to see a real Geiko (Geisha) or a Maiko performing for free.
Thank you Stefanie for your very lovely feedback. The Geiko (Geisha) puts the make up on themselves. Please check out our video 'Real Geiko (Geisha) and Maiko make up with Fukunae san. No they only wear the make up when they are entertaining. The owner of the Okiya decides if the girl is worthy or talented enough to be a Maiko. Tough business! I hope you got the information you wanted.
Is the video deleted? I watched it about a year ago and I can't seem to find it anymore.
You are welcome! Thank you for watching!
Thank you for the help! :D
凄く有名な二人ですね
美恵雛さんは美しくオーラが有り
ふく苗さんはとても可愛くて人気者ですが
引退したので残念です
You are welcome!
Así es! Fué una gran sorpresa! Feliz año nuevo para ti también!
If you visit Kyoto in the future, there are lots of possibilities to see their performance. All over the year, the different districts or "Hana-Machi" organize public shows that go on for several days. Anyone can buy a ticket and see them for prices as cheap as 4500 yen.
no se lo esperaba, que le canten feliz cumpleaños jejeje , FELIZ NAVIDAD Y AÑO NUEVO GENTE!!!
owwww....That's nice :) Geiko and Maiko's life is very interesting... actually I am wishing to be one... :) thanks for all the videos :)
So glad to know you read a good book about Geisha :D
Thank you for the response. It was very helpful! I worded one of my questions badly though. I was trying to ask where they get the makeup from, meaning do they make it themselves or do they buy it from the store or something? Thanks again :)
Hi Kuro, there is a geisha named Sayuki who in 2007 became the first caucasian geisha in Japan. I also heard about an American woman who studied with Geisha. :)
You are welcome. Well, I don't know many Geiko or Maiko but, I think Miehina and Fukunae are very special people.
Yes, it was quite an experience!
Yes of course! I should check behind the computer automated kanji characters more carefully, thanks for the correction!
Don't worry! You are welcome!
I think I've watched every video you've posted and looked at every picture you've posted on fb. I would love to see Japan in person, but this is the closest I'll get for now so I'm enjoying every bit lol.
Well, I hope you can make your dream come true and come to Japan to enjoy all these things!
Just click on the "turn on captions" button. It should be the second one from the left.
Oh, I was the one who asked the question about school (as I was first imagining that they partly went to a normal higschool and took special lessons). I was not *that* worried about her future though haha. I must confess that since that day I've become a fan of Fukunae and I hope she'll live as a talented geiko as long as she wants !
Thank you again for that event last year. I had a really good time and I long to see them again ^^
Fukunae retired before becoming a geiko in order to get married. Her husband is a lucky guy. She has a wonderful personality and was one of my favorites too.
Thanks for the help! ;-)
This April, Miehina-san will be 29! :D
Hana-Umi Productions The time has gone so fast
Shes 32 now.........wow
Thank you for watching!
You are SO lucky! I have always wanted to meet a Geisha in person! I love the art and beauty of it all, I would die if I got to meet a Geisha! Haha. Love the video, thank you!
Sorry! What I meant was more SPOKEN English. Using an interpreter, or a cheaper way such as having a voice over edited in the video are possibilities! But this is still a good video, thank you! 音は字幕より良いですが、通訳者は高過ぎるなら、ビデオを作ってから英語の吹き替えを入れてもいい考えだと思います!とても良いビデオです、ありがとうございました!
Ah, thank you!
This is very interesting to watch now because I just finished Geisha, A Life by Mineko Iwasaki and so I understood some things that I wouldn't have understood or picked up on before.
They are so beautiful and graceful! ^-^ Haha and both are also really cute when they are embarrassed. I would love to meet a Geisha in person or see her performing. That would be really amazing! I hope I'll be able to see a Geisha when I go to Japan in the future. :)
Agreed that their voices should stay in tact. But I don't see subtitles? Except the topic up in the left corner. Do I need to hit something?
This does indeed need more English so those non Japanese speakers can join in the learning process. What the KyotoFan ladies are saying is important to understanding one of the current realities of Japan. In Japanese: やはりもっと英語があったら、日本語が出来ない人も参加出来るでしょう。KyotoFanの芸子さんと舞子さんが教えて頂いていることは、現代日本を理解するのに、とても大事な情報だと思います。
Happy birthday. Miehina!
What beauties❤️
It´s such a shame i´m not Japanese T_T i cannot become a geisha...
+shisuki92 technically you can, but it's a difficult thing to do. you have to start at a young age and live your life learning the traditional arts, like music and dance. you can do it, but you have to be committed to it, and have someone willing to teach you.
It's definitely not impossible. Liza Dalby was the first Western geisha in the 1970s as part of her anthropology doctorate dissertation for Stanford. There's currently an Australian geisha still working in Kyoto, I believe.
It looked like you had a fun and interesting day.
You can get subtitles by clicking on the "cc" button.
Is geiko mehiena still active today?
Happy New Year to all
i cn´t see this video with subtitles :'(
Click the CC button on the lower left.
Wow I would love to meet a geisha upclose someday
I'd love an English translation
Geisha are beautiful, elegant women... I wish I could've been a Geisha! lol.
:) oh im a silly, lol. thanks. :)
They're so Beautiful :)
Tanjoubi omedetoo~ w
Well, usually the girls that decide to become a Maiko don't come from Geisha families, so there is nothing to be disappointed of. Actually, most of this girls get to know the Geiko/Maiko world from the media in Japan, books or magazines, and then decide to give it a try.
Japanese women are the most beautiful in the world.
I was quite disappointed to know that she had transformed from a regular girl to a Maiko from just watching Geisha on TV.
I think it would have been much more interesting if it was a woman whose ancestors were originally Geisha.
I mean, ehh, I don't know. I'm just disappointed.
Is it possible for...Americans to become geisha? or atleast study with them?
