Doug Bourdo thanks mate, I wish more people would do the same. It makes me sooooo mad to see pics of about 15 crabs lined up knowing that most will go to waste
I came here from the Freewheeler video... but I subscribed because " they just go to sleep, like us in the aircon after a big weekend on the piss" and you say "fuck" as much as I do.... thanks! from South Carolina!
100% agree with you about only keeping enough for a feed, i know a few burdekin boys that brag about taking 20 home, it used to really piss me off about that
Fu#%*n Love it!!! That had to be middle of the week sometime cause there hasn’t been a flat day like that on a weekend for a year..... Awesome job on the catch and release, only keep what u need. Nothing worse than seeing a fisherman’s freezer full of every prize fish/crab he has ever caught. Even if it is in cryovac. Promise I won’t try that spot, next weekend....
LMAO! "Like us in the aircon after a weekend on the piss" Love these vids! One of my best work buddies and fellow Trump supporter is from Australia. He's a riot!
In Florida we dump the crabs (no ties or tape) right into a cooler with ice! Worry about getting them out safely later! Like you said the cold puts them to sleep! Never had a problem and really saves on tape!! If you'll notice - chicken works great😁
SkidPig yeah agreed some people are just so greedy and don’t think about the future it irritates me a little we all want crabs every now and then but if people keep going on like this we will be catching no crabs and there will be no more awesome skid pig content.
Sometimes when you get the pots in the trees it may be because of the tide that night. Mate you have done better in the bohle than i ever have with crabs, good job.
@@SkidPig Good chance the line got caught in their prop and they tied the line to the tree for you. You DID have a bunch of crabs in it. Not everyone is a low life.
'Like us in the air con after a big week on the piss' does it get more Australian than that? I think not! hahaha Great vid guys. Gidday from Tassie! #betterhaveanotherone #mudcrabshotgun
I loved the demo on the mud crab shot gun, but i didn't need that seeing as one pierced my finger. i nearly removed it myself with my own knife before i got faint and collapsed in shock. And just before i fainted i recalled saying "Help me"
Hey, instead of using your legs to stretch the pots, try a Pizezy Pot Spreader - nothing to do with me, but I splurged on one - great on those tough pots, and old hands - Crab n Gear from Brisbane (I think) distribute them around the state (bit dear, but happy to pay for someone else's work and idea)
Lucky bugger, the one in the thumbnail looks like the yumier breed up the NT way. Good ol mullet or lamb head split in two. Cooked chicken frames go well but are unfortunately, also a favourite of snappy in these parts. And a decoy pot made of a float tied to a weight and fish hooks threaded into the rope is great insurance. Place the decoy in the second closest position in your string of pots.
hello Brother, funny how I am doing the exact same thing on the other side of the globe complete with cold beer and a bearded cohort like yours :) we use square pots though.. and fresh bait..either bull lips or chicken necks usually. stay safe and good fishing to you!!
also, in regards to fresh bait vs. aged bait I was told by an astute old crab fisherman that fresh meat releases oils into the water while the aged stuff has long been stripped of its scent. when something dies its a rush to consumption and (according to his mind) crabs of all sort prefer fresh bait..usually chicken necks which leave an oil sheen when introduced. crab dinner bell, always at dawn. you earned my respect with the statement about putting back what you will not eat. you are a steward of nature and a fine gentleman.
@@SkidPig salted mullet was my preferred bait while i chased crabs professionally, but if using whole mullet, make sure you cut them a bit before salting.
Something to keep in mind when crabbing:- Most people chuck their crabs in a pot o' boiling water when they cook 'em. Just like you would if you were chucked in a vat of boiling hot water, the first thing your crabs do is shit and spew their guts up. If you use stinking rotten shit for bait then that's whats in their guts when you cook 'em. You end up boiling your crabs in a soup of the same rank chook or rotten roo road kill you used for bait. Good luck with that skiddy
@@SkidPig I don't think it matters, even if it's fresh road kill but any part from the legs where most of the meat is, just don't over boil it. It's like making a stew where you brown of the meat before adding it to the pot.
You lads are lucky, my local spot is empty at the moment but should be good after these rains. Anyways, did ya have a decent Aus day long weekend? We went spearin at Maggie for it.
Need to tell that to the ex pro in cairns he takes your crabs cut your rope and re ropes them with his rope and sell the crabs to the shops without a license fisheries no of him been caught several times here up the cape and the Haughton River but he still does it
I live in Pacific Northwest USA about 200km S of Victoria?Vancouver BC Canada. We Don't have mud crabs like you do in Australia, but we have Dungeness Crabs, I've thrown pots for Dungeness for almost 50 years. My experience has been that stinky bait, like old chicken and other meats no longer fit for consumption are better at attracting crab if the crab population is too sparse where your pot's sitting. On the other hand, if there are lot's of crab around, you'll be more successful with higher fat content fish - Pacific salmon is best. Spiny dogfish ( small 2'-5' shark) chunks work but not as well. I have even known guys who would use canned pet food successfully if they didn't have fish/meat chunks for bait. Just put some small holes in the can with an old fashioned can opener or screwdriver blade. Remember - really stinky bait will draw em in from farther away, really quality seafood scraps seems to be a better attractant if they are close enough to catch the scent.
SkidPig yea mate there fucking nuts. when I pull up a pot full of bucks most of the claws are gone on most crabs. You can’t also barely pick them up, they are crazy aggressive
