    In New Jersey fishing. Thanks very much John for posting your videos. I've fished from various beaches for a long time but have always wished I could cast a bit further. I'll try this technique today and practice with it. I'm closing in on 70, so "easy" is definitely a good thing for me.

    Just for info. If you're using a grip lead and worried about it digging into the ground during the cast slip a length of 2 or 3 inch guttering into your bag. Lay that on the ground and rest the weight on that prior to casting.

    Excellent stuff, I have been re learning casting "properly" via easy cast and have seen my distances steadily go up whilst the effort tails off.
    There is no instant fix for casting, instead steady improvement should be the name of the game.

    I have had someone recommend to me that all you need do is take a small sheet of ply with you (or something similar), and lay your grip weight on that. Of course if it's a bit blowy, you might need to weigh it down with something, or use something a bit more substantial.

    Hello John I have been watching many of your instructional videos and although they are old they are very informative so thank you for those. I am new to the game of surf cast fishing and will be adopting your easy cast approach, the mechanics of it seems so common sense. I do have a couple of questions. Living here in France all the casting rods are out of the one mould, long and made for fixed spool reels. I have asked for advice before and although I took you recommendations on board I could not find a rod under 4.2m . I have eventually bought a 4.5m long rod essentially because it was much reduced in price so it is good quality, base on full price, just a bit longer. Anyway it is rated for 100-200g casting weight what weight would you recommend for a total novice to start casting with? I am going to get out into a field and try some practice casting.

    • @fox22250

      Starting the cast can be difficult because of the static layout. The more you think about it, the worse it gets. Try this. Set yourself up with the sinker laid out under the rod. Most of your body weight should be on your right leg. Look up where you want the cast to fly. Forget about the tackle, the timing and the rest of the technical stuff. Slide your body weight over towards your left leg, and when you feel the rod starting to bend, pull down quite powerfully with your left hand.

      Set the sinker drop about 5ft-7ft to start with. Dial in full magnet power on the Mag 2. Then cast as you do with the fixed spool but with about half normal speed and power until you get used to the reel. Emphasise the left hand pull. Back off the magnets bit by bit as your confidence grows.

      @fox22250  9 років тому +1

      john wrasse The Sandstorm is a better all-round rod, I think - and I'd go for the 13ft version. However, it might be better to wait a while because long term you might want a fairly meaty rod to get the best from the Easy Cast. There are plenty of rods available at all price ranges. Value-wise, the 13ft Anyfish Anywhere Six&Bait is excellent for off-ground work. Despite the label it works really well for Easy Casting with 5oz/150g leads as well.

    I have been practicing this cast and found I have gone considerably further than the overhead cast. I've been struggling with the overhead cast for the past 24 years, and have been very frustrated with it. This cast really is easy to do once you have the basics down it's just a case of practicing.
    I have yet to do this on a session at low water, whereby I normal wade out to get a bit of distance, I'll be interested to see what happens when my sinker and rig start sat in the water. John, do you have any advice for this situation, should I only do it from the beach and not in the water? Thanks so much for the advice and breakdown, I think it is excellent. Tight lines 👍🎣

    • @fox22250
      @fox22250  2 роки тому +2

      You're off to a good start, Matt, but as you've discovered the Easy Cast has its limitations. It is fine if you can lay the sinker on the ground, but it doesn't work when you're wading into the surf or fishing from rocks, etc. The solution is to start the cast with the sinker and rig in mid-air, aka pendulum casting. The conventional pendulum cast swings the sinker to a mid-air position with the leader towards you (or thereabouts). The other way is to cast when the sinker is in mid-air away from you - ie on the outswing. This one is known as the Hatteras style or the aerialised South African cast. The important thing is that however you make the swing, the main part of the cast that follows is more or less identical to the Easy Cast. Lots of left hand pull. There are many UA-cam videos to help you including my own pendulum videos. Start with one of the compact swings, definitely not the huge pendulum techniques. These come later, should you ever need them. Be slow, be steady, keep it simple. And all will be well.

      @@fox22250 hi again. I've had a go at pendulum casting today and managed to get as far as the easy cast so I'm making progress. I'm struggling with getting height with the cast. With the way cast it's off the floor, so I can angle myself better and look up 45 degrees etc, but with the swing and sudden left hand pull in struggling to look up and get as much height. Have you any advice to make a better transition from easy cast to pendulum? Is it just a case of practice practice practice etc? Thanks again for the great advice 👍🎣

    • @fox22250
      @fox22250  2 роки тому +2

      @@fattmort Well, it's mostly a matter of practice, Matt. The big mistake with pendulum casting is to think that you have to be quick between the top of the pendulum swing and transition into the power arc. Logic says that the sinker will hit the floor if you're not quick. In reality, there is no need to rush. Slower is better. Make a nice confident swing, feel the sinker reach the top of the inswing, then make a smooth and quite slow transition into the main part of the cast. And while that's happening, make an effort to get your head around as early as you can. Look into the sky where you want the cast to fly. Aim fairly high and slightly to the right of the direction you want because that will give you a straight cast. Prioritise your left hand as you do with the off-ground cast. Otherwise, too much right hand/right shoulder push plus not looking up will produce a low, left cast and lots of trouble. It's still early days and you have a good way to go before it all comes together. When the pendulum goes wrong, go back to ground casting for a while to remind yourself of the key steps. Just be patient and confident.

    • @fattmort

      @@fox22250 hi again John. I've been practicing the pendulum cast here in Blackpool. Thanks for the advice regarding timing, as I managed 10 very successful casts whilst waded out in the surf at low yesterday and was very pleased with myself.
      I've moved on with my set up as well, opting for a clipped down rig, 4 Oz sinker, 20-80 lb tapered shock leader, 18lb main line on my fixed Spool. Definitely think the logic you laid out in the video and the comments had allowed me to grasp the steps to getting the movement. Thank you very much for all your help it's made me very happy on my fishing journey 🎣👍

  • @jimpresley-oldfishingfool261

    Just following this method I more than doubled the length of my cast with 4 to 8 oz of lead.
    Are there any tips for when you are throwing considerably more than that.
    In the fall and winter conditions change and I end up needing to throw much bigger baits and leads.
    A one pound bait with a 12 to 24 oz sinker is often times the ticket.
    I can get about 80 yards this way but backlashing is a problem even though I can easily get more power in the cast by taking a step as I rotate.
    Any suggestions?

    • @fox22250
      @fox22250  Рік тому +1

      Big sinkers and baits often generate too much preload when they are laid under the rod. Try laying them out beyond the rod tip, and a little to the right (as you see it when you are setting up). This gives a smoother launch, which coupled with plenty of body turn and a step, should give lots of power and reduce backlashing. Instead of laying the rig on the beach, you can swing it out and start the cast with the rig in mid-air. This is the basis of the Hatteras cast which is designed to throw heavy baits a long way. The key step with big loads is to slow down - doesn't seem logical but it will help. Good luck!

      Most rods are suitable except those with a very thin and flexible tip. Your Shimano should be fine. Try it with 150g of lead and a sinker drop of about 1/3 the rod length. Start slowly, and be sure to pull down smoothly with your left hand. There are many good budget rods. Have a look at Daiwa and Cinnetic.

    • @fox22250
      @fox22250  3 роки тому +1

      It works well with most rods except those with very thin and flexible tips such as match fishing rods. These may break if the preload is too high. For surfcasting, 12-13ft is a good choice. The important step whatever the rod is to start slow, then gradually build up the power.

    Very few people can actually successfully load and unload a true heaver. (4-10, 6-12, 6-16 oz., etc.) Some of the 2-8 oz. rods can be a little underrated and give you difficulty. I have a TICA 4-10 oz., 12 foot heaver, and I'm still trying to get the technique perfected. I also have an old 12 foot Diawa Regal Strike, (One of the first graphites by Diawa) rated 1-4 oz., and with my Akios 656 CTM, it's utter simplicity to maximize its potential. I suggest we find 12-13 foot, maybe 2-6 oz. sticks.

All considered, though, the Easy Cast does better for most people and suits more beaches. Extended layouts need a lot of clean ground or the sinker won't lift off smoothly. Best bet is to try both ways.

    This guy has no clue what he is on. Most people clip the hook onto the clip of the weight so as you let go and the rig hits the water the hook line clips of the hook but obviously stays on to the line. I cast the way he said is wrong but I still get good distance. Don’t listen to him lol.

      Then clearly there is nothing wrong with the casting technique :) ...it just wouldnt suit that style of rig setup that you are talking about...OTG casts work great with a setup that does not involve clipping a snood to a standard clip.....its a tried and tested method that works brilliantly if you actually bother to set the rig up properly.....by using a proper release clip (Gemini Splashdown etc) as opposed to a basic impact lead of hook clip.....and even without clipping down.....the distance OTG gives is far better than a standard cast with the same rig setup. Standard over the head casts can work fine for different situations....but overall OTG and Pendulum casts clearly out do basic casts by a mile.
