- Merle Dandridge provided the voice for Alyx Vance in Half-Life 2 and its episodes. She was due to reprise her role in the upcoming Half-Life: Alyx, but was replaced towards the end of development by Ozioma Akagha (Dandridge's voice performance is still present in the Alyx reveal trailer).

well the game takes place 5 years before the events of HL2 so that makes perfect sense

@@user-rj7ws7pk9h They honestly couldn’t do it if they didn’t bring Merle back. Without her, the character just wouldn’t work. You’d be distracted the entire time with how different she sounds. HL: Alyx could pull it off because the game was first person and a prequel. The new perspective made hearing Alyx less uncanny, but if you’re physically able to see 24 year old Alyx and a different voice comes out, it’d ruin it.

Ozioma did a great job. Merle is much more confident and suave in a way, while Ozioma sounds just like a 19 year old version. I really like them both. Hopefully if we see Alyx again in the present with Gordon they can use Merle again for consistency (I might be biased, we've been used to her for 16 years now).
I hope so. If a Half-Life game came out with 24 y/o Alyx and Ozioma’s voice came out of Alyx’s mouth, it just wouldn’t work. It’d be disconcerting and would feel like a different character.
Merle Dandridge's Alyx feels more Earthy and charming, to say nothing of her great chemistry with the late great Robert Guillaume.
That’s exactly why they picked her. To quote Half-Life 2: Raising the Bar: “the team wanted someone with a beautiful voice, who could be charming, very feminine, and warmly intimate, but could then go into intense circumstances and be a strong, confident, and believable action character”
Ozioma is good too.

Ozioma did a fantastic job imo. She sounds very very similar to Merle with a slightly higher pitched voice.
I actually never noticed it was a different VO. I noticed the higher pitch and some other subtle differences but I chalked that down to newer recording tech. Goes to show just how good it is

They did job like it was a one person, but much younger, 19 vs 24 years old
I don’t hate Ozioma’s voice, but it’s hard to top Merle’s voice. It’s dreamy.
I've figured that I love both voices. She's 19 year old in HLA, and Ozioma does sound like a younger, less experienced and slighly more eager version of Alyx. What surprised me the most is how much Alyx in HLA hits close to home. Her personality is blissfully similar to my closest niece, who also happens to be 19 years old actually. So it's almost as if she's part of my family, which is great. Most people likes Merle's voice better because that's the voice we've been accustomed to, including me. It's also the voice I admittely fell for immediately when I played HL2 the first time. Sure. Jamil Mullen, the model for Alyx in HL2 and HLA, is a good looking woman. But what really sold me was Merle's charm and spirit. If there's gonna be a future game where 24 year old Alyx' gonna be included, I hope Valve will recast Merle to be the voice.
I was actually shocked that it was not the same actor. I think they sound remarkably similar.

The idea was to have the same voice but younger, Valve (and Ozioma) nailed it. The real question is, how did they find her? It's like a perfect younger match. Valve could have easily lied and said they simply applied some sort of "younger" audio filter to Merle's voice. I bet if we could find audio of a younger Merle it would be indistinguishable from Ozioma. And let's see what Ozioma sounds like when she turns 45. It's incredible the lengths Valve went to on this game.

New voice actress sounds great! I just hope she stays as the younger voice and Merle returns for modern day Alyx!

Lol I didn't even notice. For me the transition was 100% fluid, and the younger actor fits a younger Alyx imo

They did a great job at finding a replacement VA for Alyx, i didnt even know it was different person. but comparing the two, it really sounds like just younger Alyx, which is correct to the storyline :p

Half Life Alyx had Zero Heart. Zero weight to her words. No real emotion. No connection to the world.
Her voice never shakes, never wavers, never betrays her. You guys really just weren't paying attention. Anything will do for some of you.

Ozioma did a really good work as the 19 year old version of Alyx. I didn't notice how good it was until I hear the comparation, but I still like Merle's voice. She sounds so sexy and confident in HL2

Not sure what the circumstances were that had Ozioma replace Merle, but she did a really fantastic job, to the point that I hadn't realized she had been recast when I'd played it. She managed to keep that same playful vibe/tone and matched really well.
People tend to ignore that Merle voiced Alyx in Half-Life VR(aka Half-Life: Alyx beta) and the most prominent scene ingame with her voice is at the very end of the game

I hope that Merle returns if there is a Half Life 3, that feels like the best of both worlds. Post Gordon/older Alyx is voiced by Merle, who I feel suits the character perfectly. While Ozioma does a potentially better job at a younger Alyx. That way they both get a legacy as perfect fits for the character, and the eras in that characters life.

Ozioma was OK as far as the "younger" Alyx is concerned, but Merle will always be THE Alyx most HL fans stand by. Hope to see Merle reprising her character in the upcoming (and long-awaited) HL3 now that we finally realize what was meant by "unforeseen consequences" way back in HL2:Ep2:::wink:::wink:::talk about a mindblowing revelation during the post-credits scene of the HL:Alyx spin-off last year, whew...

Of course the changed voice actors for Half Life Alyx, they needed a younger voice! Sadly, Robert Guillaume the voice-actor who played Eli Vance passed away so they had to use another.

Imo Ozioma did a good job matching the tone and style that Merle did but having grown up with Merle's voice in HL2 I cannot help but feel more biased towards her performance.

You can compare the exact same voice lines in alyx voiced by Merle if you search for "half life alyx september 2020 build gameplay" , I think Merle's acting is more refined but Ozioma does sound like her and does a good enough job and I guess sound's slightly younger which I think is what they were looking for (wasn't needed IMO, Merle's voice and delivery can be put to a 19 y/o and 35 y/o if you ask me)

They actually recorded the line with her in fact her voiceline is still in Alyx game files but they decided to recast her to capture younger voice I guess

Guys guys hear me out. What if they are going to use 2 Alyxes in the upcoming HL3? One the Gman kidnapped(Young Alyx/Okioma) and one is our good ol' Alyx(Merle). It would be a total mindfuck and they would please the fans since both Merle and Okioma are pretty good voice actresses that I wanna see more in Half-Life Universe. Maybe they'll use young Alyx in some sort of flashback chapter and use older Alyx in regular chapters. Maybe older Alyx and young Alyx will fight eachother in a Gman/Borealis/Vortessence mindfuckery. Possibilities are endless!

Changing the iconic voice that is Merle Dandridge is one thing. But dismissively not even telling her that she was recast, despite having her work on nearly 95% of the voice work...that's messed up. Especially since Merle loves the character so much.
Merle's voice is easier to listen to. The new alyx is talking through her nose
The issue with the new voice actor is more so the direction, It annoys me how shes just ALWAYS got this millienial girl attitude of "so this is happening...YEP thats a thing that is happening", that's the manner of her reaction to EVERYTHING in the game, her father being kidnapped or possibly dead, any kind of horror, its the same inappropriate, non-nonchalance.

The lines don't help either. One memorable moment, when we met the vortigaunt, she keeps putting him down by and dismissing him. I let out a "shut up Alyx" because obviously I wanted to hear what the vortigaunt had to say.

I kind of think that too. I don’t want to get too blasphemous haha, everyone waiting for more Half Life has been loving Merle’s performance for years. But HL:A had such a human Alyx throughout, I love all the lines

The new one sucks the old one is better. Playing through Alyx now and the delivery is boring and just overall trashy. Don't understand why they couldn't have just got the original one again.
