- When things turn SOUTH!
Last week we left you in the middle of our sail from St. Croix to St. Vincent as we were out running a storm that was projected to become a hurricane. The first couple of days the sail down was a dream. The perfect wind, the perfect wave, perfect night watches, all around perfect conditions. But as the storm started to approach closer and pass JUST north of us, it brought with it some rough wind and waves.
Things start to turn south when our engine stops working, we rip a sail and get delayed getting into our anchorage by the wind direction.
big love,
beau, brandy, and our salty dog, oona

I love how Beau dosen't let you celebrate alone, Brandy! He's fun. Safe travels. ❤
That birdie is your guardian angel
Those were some BIG waves! You know the whole family was praying for your safe crossing. As always your persistent passion, energy, and teamwork to live your best life inspires me. I love you!
glad u made it save, fair winds ⛵️☀️🌴 and as always hugs for Oona 🐕🤗
How lucky are you to have a Dove as a passenger. The bird of Peace & love.
💞🕊️🕊️💞
Love how real your videos are.......that you share the ups and downs of your adventure.....appreciate the vantage point from which you allow us to share in your lives. You are inspiring.
Thank you Rick!
Sloppy seas, nice music, YO, your 120 Jenny has good form, easily converted for roller furl with a feed sewn on replacing hanks. It makes a big difference for enjoyment and safety, Great video, thanks
Glad you all made it safe and soggy! Love the music and Brandy dancing!!
I always think safety first
1. Autohelm....keep the crew fresh
2. Roller furling headsail....keep the crew off the deck at night and in bad weather. Don't have to wake the second person.
3. Windless...I think Bo enjoys the workout. Only an issue when leaving the anchorage.
number 3...completely accurate LOL
Awesome guys.... glad that you make it through! Thanks for sharing!
Good Job....you have become seasoned sailors.....passing the initiations with flying colors...Highest Blessings
Sailing, the work is hard, the overtime is long, but the pay is great, character building is permanent, and you guys have a wealth of that. The things you can't buy with money are worth the most. Good luck and keep going.
ISN'T THAT THE TRUTH!! Thanks for the beautiful reminder
Hi Beau and Brandy! So happy to see you made it! We think of you often especially during hurricane season. Be safe and God bless!
HEY KEVIN!! thank you! Hope you guys stay safe in Florida too! xoxo
That was a fun adventure!
Great Video Guys!! Just love the sailing shots and the skills you guys have to do this. Things turned out Great!! I'm so glad you guys just show what it is and let us see into your lives. Get the roller furling/sail:-)
I am so impressed with you guys. Hard core sailors. Respect.
Thank you Vincent!!
Every time I watch these I steer away from the Pearson I have been looking at. It’s a good price and seems great but all the trouble you guys have scares me
I sure love the sunset at the end... 🌅 ❤ Very relaxing.
You all are on a friendly basis with Neptune. A nice Mahi and a swell moorage. Thanks for sharing.
afternoon beau & brandy we lost track of youguys we been dodging hurricanes.we live in south-florida all we do is dodge them..we feel sorry for new orleans they got a cat-4 storm massive damage..you guys have a safe trip where ever ya go next see-ya'll
Being from Florida ourselves we know that feeling of being sitting ducks and hoping they dont come near you. Our hearts go out to all of those affected by Laura!
You have produced another great video ! You asked the viewers opinion on needed items on the boat starting with the most important. I think the most important tool on the boat would be a built in auto helm that would be trouble free. This would be like having a third maybe even a fourth deckhand on board. The second item I would want would be a Harken roller furling system with a new internal wire head stay, obviously along with this would be a new headsail. On a boat of this size given the battery limitations I would invest in a good manual windless if you feel a windless is really warranted. I would consider a windless an absolute luxury, to me it is another service item.
I'm so happy you made it safely. I'm excited to see where your going to take us. Stay safe and God bless you. Love you guys 🥰❤💙
Thank you Linda!
I love the winch drop edit!!
So glad you all are safely there. Enjoy your rest. S/V Cork
Dude, get the windlass... I've been watching you pull in that anchor so long MY back is in therapy!!
A wind vane for self-steering is a nice add-on - it's a kind of autopilot.
A wind vane has its own rudder which can be used if the boat somehow loses its rudder.
Hi Guys, as per my own experience, if your big boy Genoa is still good its worth to invest some money converting it from hanks into a furler luff, adding a foam profile to be able to roller reef at least 85 and 70%, then get a roller furler which will work from that moment on. Later you can get a brand new crunchy dacron head sail. Keep your samllest headsail on hanks and design a spare babystay to rise it up. it will be amazingly fun and useful on beam reach courses.
sadly the genoa is on its very last leg. not sure how much more we can patch it. But good thought on the babystay!
Love your music on this
Glad you guys made it safely! I am sure your family is glad to know you are there too, however long ago you made it to there. I know, I got a call today from my daughter checking up on me because of Hurricane Laura which isn't really anywhere near me too much. LOL! It should a tropical storm by the time the tail of it comes my direction. Funny how family and friends and even fans of your UA-cam Channel can get really concerned about you! It is all good though!!!
THANK YOU!! We are so appreciative off everyone watching and wishing us the best passages! We are so lucky to have such an amazing community behind us!!
For an offshore boat, the following in order, 1 hydrovane, 2 furling yankee headsail, 3 removable inner stay with hank on staysail, 4 a minimum of 3 reefs and second track on the mast for a storm trisail, 5 AIS and 24 mile radar, 6 windlass, 7 Garmin inreach, DSC GPS handheld and portable SART. Swop 6 and 7 and no.8 (should be no.2) an ocean rated life raft. Those would be my must have items for passage making. God bless and stay safe. PS better make sure the CV test kits are not contaminated, trust no b#stard is my motto
At 2:34 I thought that winch handle was gone for sure. Good recovery Beau. "Mother what?!" ;^) When you titled this episode my first impression was you were referring to the direction you were taking but the weather really did go south on you guys. Not only did your continuously improving video and editing skills show in the episode, your always increasing skill and confidence in your sailing abilities was front and center. Glad you made it safely and hope you got some sleep. Thank you for the great episode. Take care, stay well and don't lose that winch handle.
gonna have to attach that winch handle to beau on a retractable leash. That thing has gone flying more than once. Can't believe its still on the boat 😂
If your headsail is in good condition, there are good formulas out there to cut it and sew in a luff tape. You’re very good with a sewing machine! This is something you can do and save a ton of money. I did mine and it’s help up really well. I just made a job sock instead of adding a uv strip. Just a thought.
So weird seeing that small dingy pulling that big boat🤔 good seeing you 😍
Thank goodness we upgraded the dinghy a month ago, or this would have never happened!
Brandy you made my day. I never thought I'd hear such language from you. "mother....." LOL love it! Good decision to run for shelter btw, any safe decision is a wise decision. Well done.
LOL! 😂
Hope you got a good sleep after battling through the current and light wind. Great sunsets by the way! Glad your Covid negative. Stay safe and fair winds
Thank you Greg.
Whoa! Loved the foul weather gear dance. You guys rock. Enjoy a resting quarantine. Stay safe.
Until our adventures cross, fair winds and full sails ⛵
sleepy brandy makes for a loopy brandy 😂
marvelous adventure and the music and sunset shots are fabulous, thanks!
I'm so glad you guys are doing ok and that your safe! Thanks for the update, as I'm sure all of us worry about you guys. Lots of love from NE Wisconsin!
Thanks Lee!
You guys do a good job with your videos. Keep it up.
You're the bird gal!! 🥰🥰
Awesome vedio guy,s
Loved the video guys, safe travels! That ceviche looked amazing.
Thanks for uploading this guys! We sure do appreciate it! Love from Ireland xx
Thanks for watching all the way from Ireland Peter!
Hi guys another great video I think a spray dodger would be my first thing on the list of things thanks stay safe happy and safe boating cheers Barry Sydney Australia 🇦🇺
OH MAN How did we leave that out?! We would LOVE to have a dodger!
I got a good deal on a new genny and new furler at Mack Sails in Fl. Thanks for posting current videos!!! Stay safe
New windless!!!
i vote head sail w/ roller furler. that combo would make single hand sailing a lot easier. anchor setuos are good twice. when you anchor and when u eave. the sail/furler for all the rest of the time under wind
Definitely a roller furler
Great winds at your backs and the sun is great. Be easy
Thanks guys..
From all your friends at youtube sailing channels (Facebook group)
Cheers Trev...
Grateful you made it there safely. Y’all make me think my husband and I might be able to do this. One large problem 🐕🐕 we have a Great Dane/Lab & Husky/Pyrenees. They are both over 100 lbs. They are our babies. I told my husband to just get a bigger boat. 😂 the look he gave me was priceless. Thanks guys a a new quarantine subscriber and have enjoyed binging on your channel. 🙏🥰♥️🐕🐕🐕😘🙌🙌
Fur babies are the best! Thank you for subscribing!! So nice to have you all here, best wishes for that BIGGER BOAT 😁
Great sail! I’ve Been dodging storms here in Miami. Two so far.
Our 69 Pearson 35 was similar. Hank on sails, no windlass, no self tailing winches (use the cleats like you do). That large boom and mainsail meant quite a bit of weather helm which you felt through the tiller. Still spent 6 years in the whole Caribbean like that.
🙌🙌🙌 all hands on kinda sailing!
Great video luv d the ending sunset cheers
Looking at the radar you showed, it made me so nervous for you that I was on the edge of my seat here the whole time! Phew! Glad you made it!
THANKS! US TOO! It was really nice to have the weather while we were offshore!
Beau and Brandy I bet! You two are too precious. Imma gonna send YOUR MOMMA’S extra blessings n love lol. As one myself, I’m like omg 😆 Stay SAFE and fair winds oh brave ones! 💝
just a few weeks ago i bought a 23 ft saling boat.
The boat came with a furlering headsail and i would highly recamond you to buy one. keep in mind that you will have to get a new/secondhand jib that will fit the length of the fulers length from the drum at the base and the inside of the top cap. and cheak that that the new jib has the triangler cut to roll up on the
furler. It is money well invested in hands can't beat it. One person can use it on ther owen easly.
Gerard.
Thank you for the upload. Enjoyed my Thursday episode from you guys 😊. Another great adventure ⛵️⚓️
Thanks for joining along Cindy!
Be safe out there
If you are using circle hooks dont try set the hooks. They will set themselves. You will loose less fish.
I’d choose roller-furling/headsail. It’s safer. A windlass is nice because it makes like easier, but I’d prioritize safety over convenience. A roller-furler would be both.
Auto helm, windlass and then roller furler system if doing long passages that would be my choice. Loved the video.
I would want:
The new head sail.
But on a sailboat my priorities would be:
Watermaker
A/C
Mechanical auto helm
Air compressor for dive tanks.
Roller furlers break and somebody has to climb up the main stay to repair it.
I can’t do that.
For sails I am not sure but I am leaning towards all Manuel not even roller furling
Thomas D Harrell - interesting choice.
Auto helm for long trips is essential otherwise tiredness and mistakes creep in.
Lifting a heavy anchor after it has dug in after a few days soon becomes a chore. A good windlass can save you during a blow when you need to retrieve anchor quickly.
I have had my roller furler for 20 years and only had a few minor problems.
Dive tanks are useful for scrapping the hull bottom but not essential
Neil Campion I just added windless !!!!!!!!
Thanks !!!
Diving is why I am going!!
Neil Campion hey sailor!
Do you sail at night?
How often do you wake?
Thomas D Harrell - Yes I live in HK and own a 38’ cruising sailboat. I have done quite a few long distance trips to Philippines and Singapore to Phuket.
Depending on how many people onboard we tend to do 3or4 hours on/off. I sleep pretty well unless it’s really hot and then I dream about air-conditioning 😄
Love the Channel, Thanks
I you get a furler get the sail at the same time because if get sail first you’ll have to cut it down to fit the foil! Just saying!😎
Cracking sailing video guys. What's the issue with the autopilot? We may be able to help? Hank sails are great but furling headsail would be our next priority. Then a manual windlass maybe secondhand or maybe a deal with Lewmar? Avoid Quick windlasses we have seen so many issues with them in short term with buddy boats. Glad your safe for now and Una will get asore soon. Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.
I don't have a roller Furler on my boat either, and I single hand sail my boat. I really really want one, lol. But in good time hopefully, it will find a spot in my budget.
I absolute love St Vincent, probably one of the most beautiful Island in the Caribbean.
What is your top list of things to do here?
@@BeauAndBrandy Depends where you are anchored but the boiling lake is a must do. And and the jungle is beautiful with magnificent waterfalls. Get in Touch with Providence, a member of PAYS, he or one of his colleagues will make your stay worth's while.
A wow day got it done so cool
Better lucky than.. well anyway best to be lucky. And you made it.
This is the couple I was telling you about, simple sailing. They were recently given an auto pilot that doesn’t work. Here’s a passage.
Roller reefer would be a priority saves having to heave to and wake each other up to drop/raise foresails.
Best laid plans eh regarding winds but I am glad your motor is ok.
Sleep well you both earned it. Oona your in charge 🐕😂
Oona is the best in charge, especially after these long sails LOL.
Really nice video. You get an AAA +++ for effort ! Of course love your ending ..it was real!
Thank you Lisa!
Just catching up heat vid.... quick thoughts bag the roller furl. You will like it till you hit a squal and cans demo the jib. Also I have the same spreaders on a v guard be sure to check these for rot cheers
Perhaps a self-steering vane, new or used, would offload some of the fatigue and stress?
Bob
we would LOVE a wind vane!
I would get a kicker plate for your outboard as an emergency propulsion system. Sure they are hard to mount to some boats, but there are plates that can accommodate even a long short shaft outboard on some pretty funky rear ends/transoms/etc. Lots less than $100.
Hi Guys, definitely head sail roller, good strong autopilot. I have roller on main behind the mast (not inside the mast) and this is great. I don't have to reef anything and go to the mast in cad weather, Al lines are in the cockpit. It is safe and very easy. Cheers from Grenada
Get Rest. Sweet Sea dreams.. Sail on....
Thanks for another great video! Stay safe.
Glad you made it..What happened to the bird? He would have enjoyed a meal of Mahi. Thanks Beau and Brandy.
Good morning to you (afternoon for me) from very warm Dubai. +44C and feels like +55. I hope all is well and really enjoy the videos still!!
HEY! hope Dubai is treating you well!
@@BeauAndBrandy Its warm... and swimming is like swimming in a hot tub. And dead, its crazy how few people are around due to Covid. Flying on airplanes with 15% of capacity really makes it hit home. Keep safe down there!!
go you guys well-done rest well.
beautiful, thank you
Nice trip! I'd go for hanked sails every time when blue water sailing. It's wetter and harder work than a roller but more reliable and not prone to foul ups at the worst moments. Lazy jacks also fine providing you always hoist and lower the main directly into the wind. Hauling anchor is keeping Beau well toned, don't spoil him by getting a windlass.
John Lawrence agree. Roller Furler can go badly wrong in BIG winds. Plus how would you hoist a storm jib ?
Roller curler defo
Well done!
Thank you John!
I would go for a roller headsail. I use it the most because it is so easy. Windlass i don't have, mainsail lazy Jack's i also don't have, main is standard on reef one and I sail with a huge head 1 , almost code 0. Somewhere in between. Easy to reef.
Stay safe y’all
Very impressed with your sailing knowledge these days. My question is what works best for Saoirse in combating Weatherhelm moving the main car to the leeward, reefing or easing the sheets, all of the above? I know this is a very general question to a conditions specific issue but by in large, in lets say in 15-20kts what is your best solution? BTW when did your stowaway fly away? Dane E.
Motoring uncle Jim style🤣👍
Whatever works!
haha, learning from the best. lol
Beau and Brandy you guys are good at figuring it out and making it work all on your own 👍
Bird stowaways usually don't survive a trip out in the ocean, mostly because birds has a very high body temperature
Roller furling head sail.....and write it up as safety.......
agree!
oh wow! how the hell do you do it!? crazy sailing...
Just a quick good morning you 2 / I'll have to watch the whole episode after I get home from work ;-)
Hope you enjoyed it :)
@@BeauAndBrandy / yes I did :-) you 2 are such wonderful people !! I was going to ask if the Dove stayed with you on the boat all the way to Grenada ?? as I couldn't see it in the last few glimpses of the cover , but got distracted by something here at home (ops) Hope you're both still healthy and safe !! Love from La Belle Provence / Quebec ;-)
DOESN'T matter what you change on the boat or if you get a new boat. But my advice would be to never change co captains. What you have is special and it shows on the videos.
And a good decision it was to get out of there! How's the fur baby do when the seas get rough? Nice catch on the Mahi and you didn't have to share any with a shark.
Thanks! Yes Oona tends to go into the salon when it gets rough. Fans, treats and lots of cuddles keeps her calm.
Roller furler, head sail, windless.......unless the head sail is too far gone.
Roller reefing would be my priority .
Thanks, enjoying the videos. Doesn't that reel have a switch to turn the ratchet off when you're reeling in :)
Yes, furlers are really cool. Motorized ones, love watching them throw the sail out. Hows your anchor gear ? When first found u guys, your boat had cracked. Not too long ago. Got this impression that your were not too experienced. BUT, this sail has completely changed my mind. You guys do passages like experience boaters. You roll with the punches. I'm impressed. Thanks for a good passage video. Mike.
Sail / ferler then manual windlass...
