A big cat sanctuary got hit in Washington state Dec'24/Jan'25 withndo ethi g like a 50% fatality rate at the time of the article I read.
This is what happens when you centralize your agriculture under mass corporate. Small, pasture fed operations have been pushing back on this for along time, but good luck gaining any traction against the bought and paid for apparatus that is Washington, DC.
Or the "state" of Georgia. Number one industry meat chicken operations.
Yeah, even less of a chance to fix this since 47 took power. He'll probably call it a DEI woke hoax
@@johncarter1150 The State of Georgia does not own chicken operations. It's a network of individual barn owners that raise them on the strict dictats of the heavies like Tysons, etc....which means mass, crowded barns.
When I say dispersal, I mean pasture with chicken tractors, open air, and less crowding.
All of which is going to be a ticky transition given land prices and urban expansion.
What made you think Ithat I was saying the state of Georgia owned chicken operations. The influence the "chicken companies" have and the thousands of chicken operations throughout the state plus the negative environmental impact is my point.
Agreed, we have supply management in Canada for just this reason. Operations spread out across the country with smaller flocks. Keeps prices stable for farmers and consumers, but most importantly we limit disease spread and likelihood of avian to human transmission. We've had some flock culls but nowhere near the scale as the US.
Oh, was also going to say, we're not seeing this in Canada. Lots of eggs, milk, prices are stable (we buy free range, antibiotic free which are expensive, about $7cdn a dozen, cheap ones are about $3).
If it was only about the price of eggs...
There is a teenager in ICU in the lower mainland, almost died from the bird flu.
That’s interesting. I wonder if it has to do with migration or the population of birds that are there now. I know that there was a teenager in British Columbia that was very ill but recovered, but they never knew exactly where he had gotten it from but it seems as though that Clade of the virus was avian.
There is a herd of ostriches that is under threat of murder due to some of them being infected with bird flu. The family farm got an injunction staying the culling due to the research going on with a Japanese scientist.
@@Medcram It comes down partially to regulations. Corporate lobbyists haven’t been successful in diluting standards for profit. Salmonella for instance is practically unheard of due to higher food safety standards in the industry.
There have been large culls in poultry barns here in BC due to bird flu and there have been some disruptions in supply but so far no price shock like what you see in the US. I hope your institutional oversight can continue its robust work on this challenging issue under your new administration, so much depends upon it.
Thanks for keeping us updated Doc! Yet another video to send to my cousin (M.D.) for viewing. Hope that all is well with you and your family! 👍👍
At least cover your mouth the right way people. Cough or sneeze into your elbow. Wash your hands. Stay home if sick. SMH.
Sadly A ton of people dont do that. I work at a wharehouse and the amount of customers the just sneeze/cough out in the open AND also dont wash their hands when leave the bathroom is beyond criminal. That made it far to easy for the last pandemic to spread.
Love this channel. Wish the news did such a comprehensive job.
Thank you for the update 👍
With the DT misinformation, blackout, you are providing vital information. respect and thanks to you, good Doctor!
Thank you!
Yes, absolutely thank you, been waiting for your info on this.
The us imported something like 181 million dozen eggs in 2011 from China during an outbreak like this one. Also the around the same time of the 5 + mysterious poultry farm fired
Thank you for keeping us posted. Greetings from Sweden.
Thank you for this clear description of what is happening. I'm grateful for the reminder about Nac.
You are so welcome
As always, thank you Dr. Scheult, for the update on H5N1. I was wondering what the current news on this was and you are one person/medical professional that I really trust for truthful, medical and scientific information and advice.
The poor eagles😢😢
Thank you, Dr. S. Stay well!
I had an urban backyard flock for about 10 years but it was too much work for not much return. Not paying 6 bucks for eggs sounds nice but I would be nervous, there are no chicken vets in Columbus OH and I have never killed an animal. I worry people starting flocks in response to egg prices aren't going to monitor or intervene with their infected flocks
@gferraro8353 I thought the exact same thing about OSU and I live on campus. Things may have changed in the last few years, but when I had chooks there was 1 vet st MedVet and they charge emergency prices. Someone could make a killing doing housecalls for backyard flocks.
The wild geese have been hit hard by this and is probably why is spreading everywhere, but I haven't heard of any hunters getting sick yet from harvesting the waterfowl.
Soooo - quercetin, zink, vitaminC, vitaminD and NAC it is.... again?
Yea HCG & IVM but they won’t talk about that.
Iver.woks on parasitic worms in the gut, not the brain...
I think the evidence for NAC is probably better with influenza than it is with COVID-19.
LOL! Yup. Zinc blocks the viral replicase for H5N1, quercetin is a zinc ionophore, and many of us are D deficient. But now CoPilot recommends drinking heavily seeped green tea to increase EGCG. I don't know about IVM, etc., though, in this case.
✌

I never got COVID , and neither did my husband because we followed protocols.
This is golden.
It's just so amazing how no other poor birds are harmed. Crazy how it's the two main things people eat always chicken and cows nothing to see here.
All avians can be infected. I'm a wildlife rehabilatator and we are on the Mississippi Flyway for migratory birds; we have to be aware of this .
Huh? WHERE do you get your info from ?

The strain has killed millions of wild birds and tens of thousands of wild mammals "
@@karenbell3674 And you fell for the covid scam too?
Odd thing here. Was sick with something really contagious recently, tested negative for covid and the flu as well. Deep lung mucus, body aches from hell, headache, and slight nausea. Was definitely odd.
If you don’t know what it was, how do you know it was “really contagious”? Relative to what?
Many with those same symptoms have been circulating around central Arkansas. Tested negative for all routine viruses. Daughter said she felt worse than when she had covid the first time.
@@rbphilipwe have had a very unpleasant “ flu” that is hard to shake. I listen to many UA-cam channels and many presenters have severe nasal with a change of voice. It stays a couple of weeks.

Great update, but it is time to stop treating fever, except with respiratory or cardiac failure.
The doctor did a whole video on fever showing which temperatures are okay to not treat.

Hey Doc, would having a Metal Halide or a High Pressure Sodium Grow Light help instead of The Sun. In Canada, there is little sun this time of year, and not as many people go outside when it's below -25 Celsius

I assume that you are speaking of human vaccines against future infections of H5N1 vs avian vaccines to protect the birds in mass to minimize the mutations and spread? Should we vaccinate the birds now, or live a few years with no eggs or chicken on the table?
This has been affecting egg production for several years in the United States now. It’s why eggs were expensive two years ago.
Cows in California were just found to have a new strain but i can't find info on which strain. Any information would be appreciated. Is it the D or B substrains of H5N1 or H5N9?
Thank you!
I was watching a bird cam on a bald eagle nest. They lost all their babies to bird flu.
"backyard flock" generally refers to people who keep small numbers of chickens (or ducks or geese) for personal use: eggs, meat or just as pets. perhaps the term is used differently in epidemiology but if so, it's important that you clarify. i've never heard the term used to refer to wild birds.
What about the Nevada cows with clade d1.1 now? What are your views on recombinants in humans, especially with the human to cat to human from cat in that household, as we'd heard about last summer, and was finally released in that table in the recent Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, then removed?
Looking at that…
Thank you so much! We don’t have access to the CDC still. If we ever will!🥺

Thank you . “ Not causing a lot of deaths necessarily “.. Exactly what is the inference of this statement ? Can you say how many Bird Flu fatalities there have been since records keeping began and how to minimize chances of contraction hopefully aside from culling all our birds ?
I was not referring to birds where there are a lot of deaths but rather dairy cattle.
At this stage, it's not matter of if, but when this virus will become completely zoonotic. And with the current regime purging and censoring information that we depend on, on top of hamstringing our federal health agencies' capacity to surveil, track, and respond, it will be channels like this one that will prove crucial for the rest of us who choose to prepare accordingly when the fecal matter hits the oscillating device.
Blaming one particular “regime” is a poor strawman.

This isn’t what i want to see on the news, the big one creeping up very slowly.
When are doctors going to push back about not getting medical / scientific research? Is there going to be research?!
Is there any estimate of the kill rate of the virus if it mutates sufficiently for easy human-to-human transmission?
Close to zero. The more it mutates the less deadly it gets, generally, because it depends on live hosts to propagate.
However if you get a vaccine for it while there is active bird flu in the area, you will have suboptimal antibodies which encourage the virus to mutate and escape immunity, resulting in recurring waves of variants like we have now with Covid.
As per WHO from 1 Jan '03- 12 Dec '24, 261 human cases of H5N1 reported from five nations w/in the Western Pacific Region, and of these, 142 were fatal. This gives a case fatality rate of 54%. Other conjectures claim something closer to 30%. Many sources available say it is too early to surmise, as human to human transmission is yet unproven.
@@edwardkantowicz4707 yes a few cases long ago were fatal. all the recent deaths (5) were people with pre-existing serious conditions. all the other cases in the past few years were a bit of conjunctivitis and fatigue, since recovered.

Negatory, Rog. We're not falling for this mess again.
Are they using a pcr test to determine the asymptomatic cases? You know, the test that can find traces of almost anything and was never intended to diagnose active disease? That one? Advice please, I live in California, East SF Bay Area leafy green suburbs. My community allows up to 6 hens in each house's backyard. I was planning to get some chicks this spring. Do I need to worry about my mini flock getting bird flu? What about if I let them free range? If they do get sick, how do I make sure I and my cat don't get it? Is the risk enough to worry about, or should I just get my new chicks and enjoy life? Backyard eggs are very nice to have, especially when eggs get really expensive.
The only way to avoid it is to make sure you have a solid coop with a roof that is large enough for them to come out into a covered run area and wash your hands between handling them and your cat. Your cat should be fine if it doesn't eat raw chicken/eggs or raw beef.

In Argentina this has spread to Elephant Seals and birds are literally falling from the skies. 80K dead baby elephant seals. They are mammals like us.
Can someone explain why you would need to cull sick birds if they are already contained in a structure? Wouldn't it be best to allow them to live and develop immunity? Many may die, but if some survived, then they would have immunity.
Because this is a nightmare waiting to happen. By giving this virus a huge pool of biomass to multiply in , you run the mathematical risk , each time its multiplied for a mistake "mutation" to happen in such a way , lets say as to affect the surface hemagglutinin protein and increase the virus binding afinity to human cell receptors. If you think Cov mortality was overblown even at 1% overall and it still wrecked us , well this has a confirmed lethality of 48-52%. Now imagine an influenza level airborne spreader with 50% median lethality even in young people staying high like that 30-40% . That's what we are playing with here , the virulogists at the CDC are probably keeping rope in their drawer in case this one goes wrong.

Healthy chickens were culled for no reason. I can’t believe people still believe you.
Do some research. Before you start talking about belief.
Woah. When did it jump from a single human case to many?

C'mon ppl mask up!!!
Lol.
Im in, a lot healthier when I do.
I definitely wear a mask when I clean my chicken coop. But not out in public (yet) because this thing doesn't spread between people (yet). When it does become transmissible, I will absolutely mask up, because I don't want to catch it while it's a strong, novel virus. Much like Covid, or previous highly deadly bird flu (1917), it will probably mutate so as not to kill it's new host species as fast.

@@nian60 But that is complacency... we should assume it transmits person to person unless there is a peer reviewed controlled case study which shows it is not possible to transmit human to human. Every thing I know about virial shedding and transition tells me it can and would certainly spread human to human if the conditions are right. Perhaps not at a high factor? Maybe why it is not is spreading is ONLY because of painful lesson people learnt from COVID. When someone is sick, the are more likely to isolate, mask up, and never get into the faces of enclosed areas of those sick!
The infected people had families and friends who didnt get ill so maybe it did transmit to them but had no effect.

When my kids got sick, we did full quarantine procedures and avoided them like the plague. As a result we did not get COVID 19 from them. The all got it bad. So it was like a game of dodge ball!
Well, so far there is no evidence that it can spread between people. But it's just a matter of time, especially if we let it run it's course through flocks, mutating & then spreading to humans
