    Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific.
    I am sailing Tarka around the world in part to raise money and awareness for coral conservation by supporting the Coral Reef Alliance. You can learn more here:
    www.theadventur...
    or visit their website directly:
    www.coral.org
    If you make a donation to their website directly in Tarka's honor, please send me an e-mail copy of your receipt so I can keep track of Tarka's fundraising. You can forward to:
    theadventuresoftarka@gmail.com
    Additional support for Tarka’s sail for CORAL (The Coral Reef Alliance) comes from contributions by:
    Soylent - Healthy provisioning for the long offshore passages
    Sta Lok - Swage-less terminals for portions of Tarka’s rigging, making it an easy DIY job and allowing for easy inspection
    Victron Energy - Providing monitoring solutions for Tarka's batteries, to ensure we always have enough juice to do what we need to.

    I get the impression, from my UA-cam video experience, that:
    - A catamaran is like a townhouse.
    - A mono haul is like a motorhome.
    - And under 30 ft is like a tent.
    Roughing it might be more interesting to watch than luxury sailing on a catamaran.

    Well done on your wonderful videos. Thanks for sharing. You have great editing skills and your videos are a pleasure to watch, decent music that's not in your face etc. You guys look so happy.
    The other thing I love about your videos is how down to earth your adventures are. A modest boat and an eye for simplicity. Anyone can buy a quarter million dollar yacht and throw buckets of money at it. Doing it in a small boat and keeping the costs down takes skill.
    Finally, thank you for sharing your adventures. I find them inspiring. I'm in the final stages of getting my Hartley 24 ready for upcoming adventures as I head to the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart, Tasmania in February. Our paths may cross when you come to Australia in the coming year or so. It would be great to meet you.
    Happy sailing and look after that wonderful girl.
    Drew.

    Fries and mayo, one of my Dutch favorites, yum! I guess you are not that fired up to kitesurf? I would have been on the water every day all day! I'ts primarily why I want to get back on a sailboat. If you do have the slightest interest, I would get on it in the ABC's better place to learn and pick up used gear there. It will become less plentiful as you make your way west. Again, love your videos and look forward to seeing more.

      Read the book "Dove" by Robin Graham. He sailed most of the way around the world, solo, on an 8m boat. I sailed around the world on a 27' boat. It can be done on the 8m but where will you put the woman when she eventually wanders into your life? Get the biggest boat you can, a 30 footer, minimum.

      We all have to start somewhere. The plan wasn't to be in the Caribbean this long, but plans change for lots of reasons. Some are in my control, some are not, but I'd rather enjoy my time and do it in a way that meaningful to me, than rush it for the sake of appeasing an audience. I'm pretty happy with myself considering I didn't have any sailing experience when I started, learned on my own in the open ocean, and had to do a refit without the conveniences of the mainland.

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW 5 років тому +1

      I sailed around the world taking 3 years, but the goal was not to cruise but to complete a solo circumnavigation. I am on my second circumnavigation which my wife and I are into year twelve of what started out to be a 4 year trip and we have only now passed the half way point. What's the rush?? People spend many years in the Caribbean before pushing on to the Panama Canal. Ray M, what kind of boat do you have and were are you sailing right now?

    • @TheAdventuresofTarka
      @TheAdventuresofTarka  5 років тому

      I've never dropped my anchor on or near any coral. We are very careful to check where are anchor is going before we drop it. It is true, though, that anchoring can be detrimental to coral, and it's the reason why Bonaire has flat-out prohibited it.
      As far as awareness goes, we try to highlight issues coral face and efforts being done to protect them, along our way. We also donate our UA-cam revenue to the Coral Reef Alliance.
