Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific.
I am sailing Tarka around the world in part to raise money and awareness for coral conservation by supporting the Coral Reef Alliance. You can learn more here:
www.theadventur...
or visit their website directly:
www.coral.org
If you make a donation to their website directly in Tarka's honor, please send me an e-mail copy of your receipt so I can keep track of Tarka's fundraising. You can forward to:
theadventuresoftarka@gmail.com
Additional support for Tarka’s sail for CORAL (The Coral Reef Alliance) comes from contributions by:
Soylent - Healthy provisioning for the long offshore passages
Sta Lok - Swage-less terminals for portions of Tarka’s rigging, making it an easy DIY job and allowing for easy inspection
Victron Energy - Providing monitoring solutions for Tarka's batteries, to ensure we always have enough juice to do what we need to.

I get the impression, from my UA-cam video experience, that:
- A catamaran is like a townhouse.
- A mono haul is like a motorhome.
- And under 30 ft is like a tent.
Roughing it might be more interesting to watch than luxury sailing on a catamaran.
Dude on big yacht with generator, watermaker, and pressure washer is looking over at Tarka with you and 2 pretty girls with envy!
Noustha is fearless. What a find.
Tarka: The “Astronaut Farmer” of cruising. Y’all are my new role model.
It seems fairly obvious that both sister are afflicted with the same rare condition that causes them to smile virtually all the time, Makes me wonder if this effects many Dutch women think I will need to fly there to investigate ...
I live there, and i know these kind of people, trust me.. your dream only exists in your dream, these people smile for the camera, but i can tell you there are also alot of shit times and fighting
Kite boarders galore there. Most beautiful dive sites this side of the Pacific
That photo was brilliant 😎
Super photo shoot. Really cool!
What a cool idea for a photo shoot!
Well done on your wonderful videos. Thanks for sharing. You have great editing skills and your videos are a pleasure to watch, decent music that's not in your face etc. You guys look so happy.
The other thing I love about your videos is how down to earth your adventures are. A modest boat and an eye for simplicity. Anyone can buy a quarter million dollar yacht and throw buckets of money at it. Doing it in a small boat and keeping the costs down takes skill.
Finally, thank you for sharing your adventures. I find them inspiring. I'm in the final stages of getting my Hartley 24 ready for upcoming adventures as I head to the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart, Tasmania in February. Our paths may cross when you come to Australia in the coming year or so. It would be great to meet you.
Happy sailing and look after that wonderful girl.
Drew.

Wow! Camera on the kite?? What video!!!
Mad props on the winch rebuild on a pitching boat.... that's tough to do on the hard
love your videos. your storytelling is a lot of fun to listen to. please keep them coming. also glad you found company. I respect you for going at it alone and feel grateful to have a partner to share the journey with and have another opinion and set of hands when things go wrong.
OMG! Now there is two of them!
Great video! Love the story and think your video quality is UNBELIEVABLE!!
Nousta's photo is so dope. Keep uploading, I want these videos to catch up to reality!
Excellent video mate, they are getting better and better each time. Thanks and best from HKG
Awesome underwater shots!
Nice one. That underwater shoot was quite something.
Keep up the good work.
I love you content. don't listen to jealous people
How to make service of winch into beutiful art. Fantastic !
Beautiful picture!! Appreciate your underwater photography.
There must be something in the water there. You all just keep smiling!
Great episode. You had just about everything going on in that one. Must be rough sharing such tight quarters with those two lovelies. And to think I use to feel sorry for you sailing all alone out there. lol . Happy trails.
Haha, sometimes when you go out expecting to do things one way, life has different plans for you. It's a good life :)
@@TheAdventuresofTarka Amazing, ... Dutch lovelies, ... Happy-go-lucky indeed! Oh, Man! And that she can SURF like that too, trailing her hand in the water! It's unbelievable.
Bigger boats sure doesn't guarantee a better life. 😊
Beautiful underwater shots and she's a great photographer, those shots at the coral farm are amazing. I'm glad her sister was able to spend a week with you all, nice to break the boredom. I used to do some underwater photography when I live down in the Florida Keys back in the '80s. used a Nikonos, and would occasionally rent a camera from Stephen Fink's shop in Key Largo.
Cool beans. Another awesome video. Thanks guys.
Awesome footage of kite surfing. I kite surfed off Margarita island and Los Roque’s. Amazing.
Kite shot was amazing .smaller boats have a lot of advantages, like coasts or tucking your self in a small anchorage when need be or exploring shallower waters.keep up the good work my friend.
Beautiful boat and beautiful aventure
Great underwater coral shoot
Just found ur channel u guys are my heros
Once again, nice video, thanks for sharing.
As a horticulture/permaculture dork I would love to hear more about planting coral! And you gota rock a coral reef alliance hat!!! The underwater footage was crispy clean!! Nicely done!
This is so good. Keep up the good work and good luck on your adventures to Panama!
What an awesome series of adventures you are having .....a wonderful environment to explore ....always so much to learn about the sea and all her moods.....keep those videos coming
I love your coral garden concept (very nice) keep on growin'
Love your work!
Another nice job. Thank you!
Love the video the camera shots are great! Keep it coming! Cheers!
Really enjoy your videos...strengthening my plot to get an Albin Vega myself. That photo was wonderful!
I also love sailing.
Well done mate; enjoying your videos and adventures. Great job on the new windows and standing rigging; you are a very capable guy. Plus you get the girls haha
Love the channel and subscribed. It got to -16 here last night so I came here to look at the pretty ladies and warm up. Safe travels from Calgary, Alberta.
Great video nice camera work underwater keep up the good time!
Squeeze two fenders between the fuel jars and the cabin. It may prevent chafing the ties and movement of the tanks!
What a great idea for that photo shoot!
Wicked cool photos
Great photo shoot
Fries and mayo, one of my Dutch favorites, yum! I guess you are not that fired up to kitesurf? I would have been on the water every day all day! I'ts primarily why I want to get back on a sailboat. If you do have the slightest interest, I would get on it in the ABC's better place to learn and pick up used gear there. It will become less plentiful as you make your way west. Again, love your videos and look forward to seeing more.
I knew someone would call me out on that. It was suppose to be bitterballen, but I think we lost the footage of when we were eating them :/. As far as kiting goes. I really want to learn, but I also want to learn somewhere where we can self-rescue, and we haven't found that spot yet.
Sure hope she stays with you ! you make a good couple & team !
Ah man you should have put some grease on those winch bearings.
Awesome video, cute boat and company.
My father in law has a 1974 Pearson 39, I'm hoping he just gives me for being a great son in law lol.
It's not in mint shape, but it's structurally perfect, and has a new yanmar diesel motor.
I did put some grease on them, I just didn't film it this time.
You don’t preload the needle bearings when reconditioning? I’m an auto mechanic, but would think between pressures and saltwater it would be more important than ever. Especially on your house
Really incredible photo!! I'll be watching for it. What's the deal with all these Norwegian water women??!! Scuba, kiteboarding, and so far, 100% of them are beautiful. :)
Increible Hermano vive tu Vida Very Cool
Looking for a new boat, I once thought: naaah, an Albin Vega is just not cool enough. I was wrong.
Fantastic!👍
damn.. with those 2 beautys..i cant resist (:(:(: i would forget about sailing
Too bad your not stopping in Aruba lived there for 5 years have family there and my mom was born there nice seeing your macamba girlfriend( macamba/macambo : slang to describe the Dutch from Netherlands)
Yeah it was too bad. We had a few reasons for not stopping there, but one was that we passed by during a big rally, and didn't want to join the crowded anchorage :/
amazing
So cool!
bubbles and SPS corals don't mix very well... looked like a fun shoot...
Where do you store all this stuff on Tarka, scuba gear, kit surfing gear...
Hey my friend you should take a look at the french sailor channel he got a 26 foot sailboat like you .
He started from France to Cap Vert right now crossing the Atlantic to reach Martinique.
Be safe ✌️
I know the channel well :)
@@TheAdventuresofTarka Excellent!!
I think where you are right now there is no hurricane or to nasty weather ,but i saw in your last video very windy haha.
Are you planning to get into the Panama canal anytime soon to reach the French Polynesia?? :)
Nice.!!
If her sister wants a captain please let me know!!
so how big was Tarka? because my boat is 8m, and i´m playing with a thought, that would it make it otherside of the world :D
It's in the description above, 8.2m.
Mark colby thanks... 👍🏼
Read the book "Dove" by Robin Graham. He sailed most of the way around the world, solo, on an 8m boat. I sailed around the world on a 27' boat. It can be done on the 8m but where will you put the woman when she eventually wanders into your life? Get the biggest boat you can, a 30 footer, minimum.
We all have to start somewhere. The plan wasn't to be in the Caribbean this long, but plans change for lots of reasons. Some are in my control, some are not, but I'd rather enjoy my time and do it in a way that meaningful to me, than rush it for the sake of appeasing an audience. I'm pretty happy with myself considering I didn't have any sailing experience when I started, learned on my own in the open ocean, and had to do a refit without the conveniences of the mainland.
I sailed around the world taking 3 years, but the goal was not to cruise but to complete a solo circumnavigation. I am on my second circumnavigation which my wife and I are into year twelve of what started out to be a 4 year trip and we have only now passed the half way point. What's the rush?? People spend many years in the Caribbean before pushing on to the Panama Canal. Ray M, what kind of boat do you have and were are you sailing right now?
Hi friend when are you crusing to the pacific?
Your best vlog yet. Thx. s/v Tikitee-boo
I LOVE BONAIRE!
Shouldn't you be packing the bearings with grease? Just wondering.
They were, the footage just didn't make the final cut :)
The life!!!!
How do you promote awareness about corals.? When you are dropping anchors on them. Please elaborate. Thank you.
He clearly said he doesn't anchor,.. only mores
nelson reau , why does he have anchor on his boat?
I've never dropped my anchor on or near any coral. We are very careful to check where are anchor is going before we drop it. It is true, though, that anchoring can be detrimental to coral, and it's the reason why Bonaire has flat-out prohibited it.
As far as awareness goes, we try to highlight issues coral face and efforts being done to protect them, along our way. We also donate our UA-cam revenue to the Coral Reef Alliance.
@The Adventures of Tarka , okay fair enough. But have you ever once dragged into coral or something? If never i salute you.
Jasper quit being such a di$k!
two very pretty girls on a crowed boat... Life is not Bad.. like your video admire your life
cool girls, beautyful girls, nice girls 😍😘❤️💓💕
where did you get your mechanical skills?
I'm not convinced I have a lot of mechanical skills, but I pick up more as I go!
this is good life :)
What is the beach covered with @ 15:56?
Why can't the dinghy go upwind again? I didn't understand why.
With the kite, our engine isn't powerful enough to tow it, and the two of us against the wind and waves
Very pretty woman, well done lad
Can I come and visit?
Look's like "Singa".
Where is episode 22?
Oops! Good catch ;)
Cut a hole in the bottom of a cardboard box and slip over dem winches. That way when you drop a part you're not not like oh fuck
Nice videos. Color seems muted.
First! This made my day!
Dag alamal xx
how do you learn, cant anchor here, put dingy on mooring here, no reefs here, bla bla.
⛵🌎🌍🌏⚓🍹🍾
Her sister gonna come back 9 momths later with a present.
That video gonna be called Tarka Gets 2 Visitora
Any close encounters with sharks yet?
How many feet long is Tarka?
Not yet. We'd like to see more sharks, though. They're also a good sign of a healthy ecosystem.
@@TheAdventuresofTarka Whereabouts are you right now?
Just a thought. I’ve heard people grip at your intro, too long or too corny or what have you..... I would just comment it’s sad the single person intro is introducing a boat built for Two. But mine is a better two than theirs lol 😉. Keep sailing my dream son.
The intro is due for an update, that's for sure!
Why dont you do a photoshoot of r
Trashed not staged...come back to Colombia and you will have a plenty around Barranquilla, Puerto Velero, Cienega...etc
Sorry but your little head is overtaking your big head. Let's hope your dreams aren't stolen from you
Congrats on the sex.
With her sister!
Bet your parents are proud.
