I sold these cars and it seemed there were 2 types of SVX’s. The ones that were reliable and durable and, well, the ones that gave you ulcers. They really stood out in a lot of new Subaru’s and that probably worked against them as much as it helped them. I think they were just too advanced and different for what most customers thought a Subaru was. I remember they were very comfortable, very quiet (especially with the windows down), and in bad weather they were like a billy goat, nowhere they couldn’t go. A very unique car for its time.

the SVX's 4eat automatic trans was the strongest version ever made of that design, they aren't that weak, the only ones failing are the ones who didn't respond to the torque converter recall, the 91-93 tourqe converter had problems, they disintegraded bit by bit and clogged up the high pressure lines feeding the rest of the transmission.

  • @TheBsniz

It's a great honor that the SVX would get its own spot on the Wizard's channel. I'm big in Subaru communities both in NY and Canada and there's always one or two of these things at meets. The community is fascinated by them. And I'm sure Subaru would make money if they introduced something similar today. But not if it's as expensive as it was back then. The communities only complaint is the auto only. The 4EAT trans has many quirks and requires perfect owners to live a long life. And it wasn't ready for the torque of this car. A 5 speed would've been incredible.
Edit: About the driveshaft. I had a bad u-joint and carrier bearing on an 05 outback. 90% of the shops i contacted said it either can't be fixed or we'll give it a shot and leave you with a bill if it fails. Ended up taking it to a Subaru dealer and spent 1 grand on an entire 2 piece drive shaft because the shaft is welded after the carrier is installed and the u-joints aren't replaceable. The cost was increased by the fact that it was an Outback Sedan. Pretty rare, even here in the Northeast US. Took a week just to get the parts shipped. By comparison, my 96 Impreza had a clutch pack burn out in the trans and for the same cost and one afternoon it was torn apart and ready to go.

With auto seatbelts like those, I’ve found that the worst thing you can do is to first stick your head out the window, and then open the door. The belt buckle will slide forward and try to take your head with it. Having the openable window be really small will probably help prevent such situations.

I have replaced a few staked in U joint's on my Subaru's. There are aftermarket replacement u-Joints which use circlips on the inside of the yoke to stay in place, and pressing or drilling out of the stakes is required, a simple process. Subaru uses the same size U-Joint as the older Toyota Highlander's, Lexus RX300 and a number of other Japanese automobiles because all these driveshafts came from a common supplier.
And these SVX eat wheel bearings, its a heavy car and the bearings are undersized for the car as they are from the lighter, lower HP Legacy model. Also the variable torque distribution AWD system this uses does stress the bearings a bit more than Subaru's other AWD systems, it sends more power to the rear wheels than the typical Subaru AWD system. The wheel bearings, being press in, need great care to install them so the don't shortly fail again.

I got rid of it quickly and replaced it with a 1991 MR2 Turbo. That was a good choice. The SVX was a great car, a bit heavy, very comfortable inside, it ate up highway miles. The SVX was designed as an homage to the DeLorean DMC-12, as it was designed by the same engineer for Subaru, and was the flagship car for the new rounded off designs for that year. I had a Pearl White 2/91 just like the one in the video. This is a 92' as it has no airbag on the passenger side and the rear covers and the trunk lid are black with no spoiler. I had a 2/91, right in the beginning of production car. The AWD versions had the 4EAT transmission from the Nissan Pathfinder in them, which was there curse as they always broke from the heat. My front and rear had 1 extra tooth from all other years making it hard to do a proper tranny rebuild. It was a short production car in the 5 years it was out and was prone to rust in the rear wheel wells, rear wheel bearings going bad ( the car is 4200lbs ) and ate tires. It was, at the time, the most expensive and heaviest Subaru produced and was meant to be a challenger to the Nissan 300Z.

This model was rarely seen new on a Subaru dealer's lot as they were such a departure from the rest of the Subaru line. In many ways, they were a special order from Subaru. The reason for only a portion of the side windows rolling down is the curvature in the glass. For the entire window to lower would require a much thicker door. For the time they were a very fast car with a top speed in excess of 160 mph.

Isn't it kind of like the customer saying "F you" when they opt to save money on hood props rather then replace them for your (the mechanics) convenience? For that reason alone I try to keep my engine bay somewhat clean and "well kept" so it appears I care about my car and my mechanic.

Just sold my SVX. comments: typical for power steering rack to leak- replace o rings. Wheels are uni directional. Left wheels have small L on them. Enjoyed the car -always got looks! Never felt like I “saw myself coming and going. “ Very unique.

I owned a 96 svx !! I purchased it in 1999 had only 30k on it was like new! It was black in color beautiful inside and out! I've owned alot of other cars foreign and domestic..but this car will go down as the all round best car that I ever had!! Sure there are other cars but this car delivered everything..smooth at high speed..AWD..very quiet but powerful engine!! I had to change the wheel bearings 3 times as it was a big issue with this vehicle if not done properly! But that was pretty much it for me...it never let me down! I have always thought that they should have kept making them!!

you mentioned driveshafts, the speed 6 in the background is similar, a replacement driveshaft is $1000-1500, the propellershaft seal is a common failure point, most (if not all) leak some by 100k

I recently discovered this car's existence and as a DeLorean owner I really liked the design of it. When car wizard mentioned it was Italian designed I thought "wait a minute... " and looked it up. Sure enough both cars designed by the same guy Giorgetto Giugiaro. No wonder I like it ha ha.

I have 2 SVXes, the driveshafts new do not exist anymore unless ordered from Japan for 3000$.
The local Cardanic drivershaft shop did change all 3 U joints on my driveshaft and it works perfectly (balanced too). So they can be fixed, but you have to look around, and expect to gamble on it somewhat as well.

Wheel bearing noise comes from not grounding front struts to main body of the car. Difference of ground causes wheel bearings to wear sooner. After replace bad wheel bearing you need to install ground strap from front struts to body of the car. Since front struts are isolated with rubber cushions to stop the road vibration to the car. I replace my front wheel bearing three times and with ground strap added I do not have bearing problem anymore. Also transmission goes out every 75K miles.

I think way more people would work on their own cars if it were easy and inexpensive to have your own two post lift at home. Being able to walk underneath a car makes almost any repair or replacement exponentially easier. Easier on your back, knees, etc. easier to see everything clearly, easier to install or uninstall parts.
If I had my own lift at home, I’d be willing to attempt all sorts of repairs that I wouldn’t dare try myself without a lift.

My Uncle had one of these for a good while; 10 years or so, maybe a bit more. I want to say it was a '96 or '97 model -- one of the later ones, definitely. Fun, sporty little car. This one is in fantastic shape, considering it's a '92 model -- really well cared for, obviously.

Hardly anyone knew about these back in the day and hardly anyone bought one. This was before Subaru was cool. As one Subaru dealer explained, "People who buy sports cars don't buy Subarus and people who buy Subarus don't buy sports cars." Keep in this was before the WRX and BRZ. Of course now lots of people know of them thanks to the internet and prices are way up, unfortunately. People who dismissed them at the time now sing their praises.

Ah, the SVX. Imported to the UK via a 3rd party company, only ever sold by Subaru themselves in white (but could be repainted by the importer "International Motors" to any Subaru colour if you ordered it). I still have the launch book detailing the revolutionary leaps such as the moulded plastic fuel tank and the six cylinder Boxer 3.0 L engine. Beautiful car, but sadly I only ever saw 3 of them in my time with Subaru. I seem to recall the Automatic Gearbox was a little fragile, but the rest of the car was sturdy enough.

I had a 92 for several years. Wheel bearings are a common issue. I would also change the filter in the auto trans. That was a huge issue resulting in overheating the trans. Wizard didn't talk about the flat 6 much. Dual knock sensors, 7 main bearings !!. Some mechanics were afraid of this car as it was too complex for the day....bonded glass construction, winter/summer wipers....

The solution to the silly universal joint problem can be found in a recycling yard under a Toyota or Daihatsu or Nissan.
Actually you just use a diagrinder to remove the locking lugs press out the ujoints and fit ones that use a C clip on the cup inside the joint instead of outside . You may need to file or machine the lobes on the shaft flat so the C clip has a good contact surface that won’t push the clip off in one spot.

I really admire what you do brother. You are above beyond what I strive to be in a mechanic. I live in a rural area in KY and want to corner the market as the ONLY person in the area who works in exotics. And no, this isn't an ass kissing session, I just want to let you know your fans, like me, really appreciate what you do and how you do it. I learn something every time I watch your videos, even with the goofy ones with Hoovie in them😉
As always, have a great day my friend. I would love to come see your shop sometime, maybe if I make it out that way I'll get the chance.

Probably not much. Oil is not really poisonous if it doesn't contain lead or other adhesives. For instance we use vaseline all the time and it's not harmful. It only gives you diarhea if you take a gulp. Still, if he takes in 5ml per week in oil, at the end of his career, it'll be a dozen gallones that he has drunk.

I knew someone back in the '90s who dailied one of these and loved it.
That parking brake handle reminds me of the 2WD 4WD lever in the earlier Subarus, back before all Subarus sold in the US were full time AWD. They had a lever between the seats next to the handbrake that you'd lift up to shift the transfer case into 4WD.

That's a sweet looking Subaru! I own a 1993 Subaru Legacy sedan (154K miles) that runs great but it is an "unpopular" spec; it's *front wheel drive with an automatic (4EAT).* AFAIK, it is the only one in my city; never seen another one. My Legacy also has automatic shoulder belts that work... too well. They're strong enough to choke you if you're not sitting back when you close the door.🤣
