Car is definitely burning oil and that’s why the actuator went out. Replace it all you want, it will happen again in the near future. Needs to have the pistons and piston rings replace along with the actuator. After that oil changes every 3000 miles not any later and you might get another 100k out of the car. Is it worth it? For the next owner to decide.
You dont need to remove the timing cover to change the sprocket. Just keep tension on the chain from above, remove the tensioner on the side of the timing cover to get some play and remove the entire cam. The only difficulty with this job is keeping the vvti sprocket unlocked, but youre not going to reuse it anyway
don't go to the stealer shop use local repair shop maybe for half this price I had same problem 2 yrs ago same toyota everything went well after changing intake sprocket
By any chance did your traction control light and check engine light turn on when you had this issue? And did they turn off once you changed the intake sprocket?
@@IDK-bd8hehello, I have the same exact problem, did you find the problem? My car does that rattle noise just when I start the car, but after that it drives fine and no noise, and I have check engine light and traction control light on
@@dueck303 Literally word from word is what I’ve been going through. It’s been six months though and no issues car works fine. Just have to deal with those pesky lights at the dashboard which do stress me out a bit. But you should be good. Only problem I really had was that my car wouldn’t start. But that was because of the starter and it needed to be replaced
Mine makes a similar noise when in gear and idling. It doesn't Only do it on start up.. has a gurgling sound. Wondering if my problem is the VVt or the timing chain tensioner.
@@emmapellerin4526 Yup, I regularly changed my oil with Full Synth Mobil and still happened. Gonna try replacing the VVs hopefully that's all I need to do.
Different strokes different folks , I change every 3k with cheap oil. Never had a problem. I however have switched to full synthetic since Covid. Knock on wood tho
Toyota pushing those 10k mile oil changes. The piston rings start wearing out. We have 2 4cyl Venzas 1 on 10k oil changes and 1 on 5k oil changes both have 160k miles and the one with 5k oil changes has no rattle on start up and doesn't burn a drop of oil.
Running rough, sounds like it hasn't been properly maintained. Toyota engines sound smooth with even over 250k on them if properly maintained.
He did say his stepsons car
Just recently did the same tune-up on wife's 2010 Equinox..... changed both the intake and exhaust actuators.

There is also a vvt filter which may be clogged and causing a problem

That car is a bit old. But still sounds ok
This is what happens when you don't change the oil regularly with high-quality oil.
This happen to mine and I use good oil and change it on time. But not everyone can afford good oil
