Can I just point out how at ease this video made me feel? As an African looking to gain insight as to what it’s like pursuing a medical degree in Europe & having an African being the one to explain just makes my heart swell. Thank you 🙏🏾 I can now apply to Maastricht with more confidence

Amazing!! Please do more videos 😊
I definitely will do. Feel free to check out some of the more recent videos on the channel as well
Hi Hillman, I grew up in maastricht and did a six month SLPT internship in mumc. My findings are that the social experience heavily depends on where and what you study. I've attended multiple schools in maastricht, heerlen and eindhoven and found that it was drastically different in each school or class. Some classes were a tight-knit group from the start, some were more distant and goal oriented (like mumc). And then 5% of the schools were absolutely awful and people downright bullied each other. I think this might be the case everywhere in the world.
Maastricht is supposed to be very cultural but it hasn't been known to be very inclusive. The people are very proud of their city and heritage and I've noticed that if you don't speak the dialect you can have a hard time fitting in (my sister in law is from Brazil, some people won't adress her directly but speak to my brother instead because they are afraid they can't understand her.) It's almost like Japan haha.
If you are looking for a very nice place to make friends in maastricht though, try cafe tribunal or irish pub shamrock :) I've met wonderful people and many friends there. Hope Covid isn't making you too lonely or isolated. And if you need a friend, I gladly volunteer(^^)/.
Thank you very much for the tips and I will definitely keep your offer in mind🙏🏾
Thank you so much! Subscribed:)
Thank you for sharing. Very helpful tips. I applied to Media Studies (Masters) at Maastricht University. I hope I get accepted😀.
I hope so too for you and I hopefully look forward to seeing you soon in Maastricht!
so much sense.
Oh my this was so helpful thank youuu! Also can you talk about entering process? please :)
You're welcome. Are you referring to the selection process for medicine?
@@oxlegacy yess I was, but never mind it, I think I found the video from when you were a fourth year student :)) thanks again! all the best!
@@costeamara3966 Oh fantastic, I was going to refer you to other videos on the channel because I speak about the process in different videos. Best of luck with everything. Feel free to let me know if there are other specific things you want me to talk about which is missing on the channel.

This video really went a long way to help me adapt overseas

Thank you very much! I hope so :)
Hey! I also applied for Maastricht bachelor psycology but unfortunately I'm not in....I'm a medicine student in Italy. I wonder how is possible that people without even high school diploma were accepted, and not me that I'm almost finish with my medical bachelor (so I m way further in my academic path). Do you know what are the criteria be accepted? Is speaking more then one foreign languages help? I'm changing my mind about going to study in the NL ,also because Dutch bachelors are not accepted in Italy at all, therefore I'm thinking to go further with my medical career here, but I'm still curios how this works , maybe for a master in the future :) thank youuu
Congratulations on completing the first three years of your Bsc ! good luck with the other three! Loved the video. Im looking to study Medicine at Maastricht next year and so excited but worried about the selection process. Any tips from current students?
Ayat Nasir Thank you very much. Can you reach out to me via email or something with any questions you may have?

Hey, I went through the selection process this year and got a place but had to defer to next year - so we would be starting at the same time! Let me know if you have any questions about the process :)
@@emmatong6734 Hi Emma. Great that you are willing to help. Some other people have reached out to me on other platforms with questions about the selection. Would you be willing to help them as well with questions they may have? We could maybe exchange contacts if that's possible. Please let me know
@@oxlegacy Of course! Obviously I haven't actually started the course yet but I can definitely help with the selection questions :)
@@emmatong6734Hey Emma and Hillman.
First of all, thank you for this video Hillman!
I would be very grateful, if Emma tells you the important aspects of the selection process. So that you could make a video about this. I'm really interested in studying medicine at UM.
It woud be also helpful, if you just write your experience with the selection process. I mean it is not necessary to put this in a video.
Thank you very much!
Looking forward to hearing from you
you're so wholesome pls
Thank you🙏🏾
Amazing video! Looking forward to more medical videos! Will you be doing your masters in Maastricht as well?
Yes I will for the most part.
@@oxlegacy As I am aware, from the university's website, the masters for medicine is only offered in Dutch. Has that changed or is there an option ?
@@sashaparis9755 No it has not changed yet. It is still only offered in Dutch.
@@oxlegacy Thanks for your reply. One last question, what grades (A,B or C...) did you obtain in your A levels in order to be accepted by the school? And did your personal statement help?
@@sashaparis9755 that really depends on your personal situation, there are no well defined rules about that. Sometimes you just need to pass, other times, you let grades might actually matter.
Do you mind making a video about what process and exams you had to do in order to get into medschool. I’m considering moving to the Netherlands and pursue medschool but I’m not sure how after having a bachelors here in the US.
Same here! I hope he gets to see our comments
Hello I just discover your channel and I really appreciate your video. I plan to apply in Maastricht next year so I wanted to know how difficult is the "recruitment", can you make a video about this topic?
Depends on what program!
I just got my admissions email. I’m praying they’ll give me a student visa
How hard was it?
Hey, I’m thinking about applying for the med program in Maastricht and I wanted to ask you if you have any idea of what the application deadlines are, and what the requirements are. I am currently studying for my SAT and wanted to know if it is accepted there. Thank you for your video, it was very helpful. ❤️
Hey, the deadlines and requirements are all indicated on the website under the specific programme. There should also be an email indicated so you can email in case you have further questions. I hope this helps.
@@oxlegacy thank you ❤️
howcan i contact/reach you doctor? I have few questions
Pls how can I fund my education
I was curious if you have made any african friends or if there are african associations ? I’m worried about being an outsider
Kai Exo Yes I did make, a lot of them. Don’t worry about it, you will definitely find your crowd here.
Hey Hillmann! How are you? I'm a medical international student at University of Turin (also an english taught degree) and am thinking of doing a semester abroad at Maastricht. Do u happen to know any exchange students who did the International Track in Medicine at UM for a semester? Would really like to understand better how that experience is.
Hey Amanda, I might be able to help you out with that. Please send me an email via hbatuo@gmail.com
@@oxlegacy just did! :)
Is there English program for the master's part of the 6 years? or how does it go? Like are all of the 6 years in English or do I need to study in Dutch too?
The masters programme as of now is only in Dutch. So you need to study dutch indeed
@@oxlegacy do u know which university in Netherland masters also teach in English?
I have not heard of any university in the Netherlands that offers the masters of medicine in English at the moment
are you going to do your AIOS/ANIOS in the Netherlands ?
I am not sure yet, only time will tell😅🤞🏾
I will apply to Maastricht in two months. For the global studies porgramm. But I'm extremely worried that I won't get accepted. How hard is to get into Maastricht really? Do actually NEED to have the exact GPA they ask? And do they look into your extracurricular activity and volunteer work?
Hey Giulia, great you reached out. It of course varies per program and normally extracurriculars are a good addition but I can’t really tell you how big of a role what plays. Maybe an idea to ask the program ambassadors?
@@oxlegacy thank you sm for replying. Do u have the contact of them ?
Hi there, where did you find housing? How did you fund school if you don’t have parents funding?
Hey Linabella, please send me an email via hbatuo@gmail.com and I can maybe help you better.
Can you make a vid about what you have to do in order to apply to the UA?
University of Amsterdam?
@@oxlegacy my bad, I meant university of maastricht haha
Whats the current state of Maastricht... Would you move there to work now?
I think that all depends on what you are actually looking for in the city. People have different preferences; some could love it and others not.
Hey, I'm a prospective student (at Maastricht) and I have a few questions concerning the documents I have to upload. I would really appreciate your help :)
You can send me an email and I can see if I can be of help to you.

An i want to ne a neurolog and i am from cameroon please help me
how much time did it take for you to learn dutch?
wait imma watch the video now
Hello there! Nice video! I'm currently thinking of applying to the Maastricht University for my master's degree (Neuropsychology) and I was thinking if you could make a video about the university itself. You know, showing the campus a little bit and/or sharing your experience with the university in some detail. Thanks a lot!
Hey there, thank you for reaching out. There are quite a few videos of the university online and on the instagram pages of the study ambassadors. Maybe you could check those out and if there is something specifically you would like to see and didn't find it there, I could make a video about that.
I am currently a grade 12 student and i want to study medicine in the Netherlands, but the whole process is really confusing, do you have any idea where i can find the admission requirements for uva? Based on countries, and do you major in medicine immediately? Because i saw that you need a 3 years bsc degree, do i need to major in a scientific subject or can i chose anything i want then after the 3 years apply to med school??
Also when should i start learning dutch cause i thought of taking my bsc in English then med school dutch, so i can learn it better since i have no background in it what so ever
Sorry this is really long im just really confused:(
UVA? University of Amsterdam?
@@oxlegacy yupp
@@Starrctrl I don’t really know about the admission requirements for Amsterdam. Maybe if you take a look at their website, you can find more about that?
@@oxlegacy hmmm what about Maastricht? Cause i started checking the websites it’s really confusing im so sorry for bothering you 😔😔
@@Starrctrl I understand. If you do not understand anything on the website, you can just send an email to the university and they can clarify the things for you.
Did you take a look at the Groningen university before? Do you know which medical school is better? maastricht or groningen
That is very difficult to say, it depends on you and what works better for you. But I guess you can also check out the rankings:)
I applied to both. Maastricht accepted me but no answer yet from Groningen
If i may add something to this question then i would say that first, Groningen (way up north) is colder then Maastricht (way down south) 😱but more importantly, its important to know that every uni in the netherlands has its own teaching philosophy. Groningen has a much more do-it-yourself approach whereas in Maastricht everything is done in groups with a much more social interactive element. I studied in Groningen, my sis in Maastricht😷. My info might be outdated, though these things dont change much over time. So make sure the way they teach fits the best and nicest way for you and, my gosh i wish i could do it again😇, enjoy it!!
@@thestreetfits1759 what is the application process and the whole acceptance system like??
Hello i am still in uppersixth and i want advice to known how i Can start
Heyyy, please send an email to oxstudentcoaching@gmail.com and I will try to help you as much as I can.
Hey , I'm currently studying in curacoa it's a Carribean med school based on US curriculum I really want to take a transfer from this university to netherland because in Caribbean med school there is an exams like NBME and usmle step 1 which we should clear after the 2 nd year of our medical degree for our further clinical clerkship and it's mandatory too and it will took our additional years to clear those exams may be 2 or 3 years so it will lag my medical degree i really don't want that... Can you please list some US based curriculum medical schools in netherland which I could be transferred my 3rd year
Please let me know if there is I will be eagerly waiting for your reply :(
Heyy as far as I have heard and found out through research, it almost impossible to transfer here. You always have to apply for medicine from the beginning. There is a chance that some universities might let you skip to later years if you can prove your knowledge is up-to-date but that’s a big IF. The fact that you have a couple of years of Med school already most likely helps your application process. Utrecht university (SUMMA program) and Maastricht university (A-KO) also have special programs which allow students who did a different heath related bachelors become doctors (plus researchers). It’s worth checking those out as well. Hope this helps you in some way.
i applied for Maastricht this year
That is good to hear. Best of luck with your application procedure. I am rooting for you!
Are you planning on staying in Holland after you get your degree in medicine ?
Not sure yet, depends on where there are opportunities.
Interesting content! How expensive is it to study medicine in Netherlands?
🙏🏾 Thank you, it depends on the program and on the university too. Please check out the website of the different universities for more accurate up-to-date information
@@oxlegacy I just did. So it's approx. 30000, right? Is there a way to fund this aside from the €1000 student loan/grant? Would you mind sharing how you fund your studies?

Hi! Is there a way I can contact you personally for help on how to apply to Maastricht from abroad?
Heyy you can definitely contact me hbatuo@gmail.com
I would advise you to book a coaching session to discuss all your questions and inquiries. I normally don’t respond to questions via email unless they are very short. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Hey Hillman , how can I contact you personally about your pathway to medicine ?
Felibrend Ebot yes definitely. I look forward to hearing from you
Hillmann Batuo I sent you a dm on Instagram. Thank you in advance. Your video was very helpful
Bruh how can I contact you??
To your first point: As a German who has been to the U.S. - I am very sure much of that is due to that “European coldness” we have here. We are not nearly as outgoing as US Americans so making new friends will probably not go as smooth as in those (American) films but you have to make more of a conscious effort. I mean you figured it out, I just wanted to add :)
I know the comment is old but how do you recommend specifically making friends?
@@iiAngelic I think my main advice would just be not letting yourself be discouraged by it and being confident in approaching people. And know that you are likely to have to be the one to approach someone because they wont nessassarily approach you and not take it personally. Once you've approached a person/a group with the intention of making friends we are just as open and inclusive. I've had situations where i thought people didnt like me just because they pretty much ignored me until i realized i was doing the exact same to them. Once you start with one kind conversation you realize they probably thought the same about you and suddenly realize they are nice.
Keep an eye on your vit D levels, medicine often ignores our old folk wisdom. But so so many people with colour suffer medical problems because the lack of sunshine causes severe problems with vit D intake. Old folk wisdom says when the month is spelled with an r in it you need to take vit D supplements.
but if you take vit. D, please please PLEASE take vitamin K2 with it. D and K2 work in tandem where calcium is concerned. D3 takes up calcium in the blood and K2 transports it to where it is needed (bones, teeth). Without K2, calcium can be deposited in soft tissues, which is kinda a disaster. Read 'The Calcium Conundrum' by Kate Blaeu (I believe that's how her name is spelled) and if you're looking for science papers, look up 'the Rotterdam Study'.
Is the medicine program taught in English?
Shaira Gawad yes, there is an English track for the Bachelors in Medicine
@@oxlegacy after completing batchelor can we move to any English speaking country for master or clinical?

Hi Hilman, great video. Please i would like to send you a mail with regards to my application to Maastricht
Sure!!! Did you already send me the email?
about calling professors by the first name... I'm Dutch, but I'm of an older generation, and believe me: I *loathe* this new tendency of students calling teachers by their first name. Or children calling their parents by their first name. Argh! Or employees calling their manager/director/boss by their first name. Puh-leeze!! Or - and this made me physically gag - twenty-something 'tv presentors' asking senior citizens on the street questions and addressing them with 'jij' and 'jou' instead of with 'u'. NOPE!! That is NOT how my parents raised ME. And I really loathe it. In the case of parents... parents should parent, not try to be their child's buddy or best friend! And as for your boss or professor... it's so fake! Your boss is not your best friend, he's your boss; in charge or making the decisions. He might ask your professional opinion, but you're not buddies.
No, I much prefer the politeness and professionalism of 25, 30 years ago.
This is indeed an interesting perspective. Thank you for sharing.
