  • hi loves! thanks for hanging out with me:) Put video quality to HD
this was a pretty lowkey inkom week by some standards - because of COVID and the website issues trying to register for events, its usually a bit crazier than this!! still- it was a really special week to spend time with friends and enjoy some time before classes start.
at the end of this week I had a (minor) breakdown and have a bit of an honest chat about homesickness, acne, and just the pressure of life. if that's not your cup of tea- I hope you enjoy the first half of the video still!
love you all and hope this can encourage you :) take care.
    songs:
    Jupiter rainstorm - liana flores
    council crest - hard yes

Ariel's Momma here........oh sweet girl, you are amazing. I LOVE your courage to be transparent/genuine and I LOVE your heart to encourage others. You are such a gift, my love. We miss you sooooo much back home, but you are where you are supposed to be and where you have worked so hard to get to. Our love and prayers envelope you every minute of every day. You are sooooo loved. You go girl....you go.

Hey there Ariel. I'm not sure if this will help a bit but i'm a third year student in Maastricht and even though I didn't go to inkom myself, I do really recognize things that I went through in my first year as well. The feeling of isolation and the anxiety of being judged is quite a normal thing when going to a new school in a new country. It's overwhelming at times and you feel pressured to just try to keep up at a pace you personally can't keep up with. And this is gonna sound very stereotypical but honestly ... it gets better. You really get used to the way of life in Maastricht eventually and the fear and anxiety will be more on the background. Keep going :) I believe in you and I hope to follow your journey through these videos

Thankyou for sharing!!! Definitely helpful and accepting the normal feeling of being overwhelmed is something I’m working on

you’re absolutely right, you only see the highlight reel of others lives, but it’s the lowlights that matter the most. you didn’t come this far only to come this far, you’re going to keep going and you’re going to feel like you’re carrying the weight of the world at times ✨ but you’ve done so incredibly well- and someone out there is feeling the exact same, and hearing your honesty will change their life, lots of love 💙

you make such a strong and wholesome impression wow👀 I can relate so much to forcing yourself to be flawless and mature and merely allowing yourself to be an actual human who struggles and cries etc….

Hello Ariel! Thank you for being so open about what the experience of studying abroad is like. I often feel it gets quite glorified and people do not speak about the lows enough and it then seems just like this fun thing we are all doing. And don't get me wrong, I understand just how privileged all of us who study abroad are...Just really wanted to express how much I value your honesty as someone who studies abroad (for the third time in their life already), what you are saying at the end of the video about isolation and meeting many new people really resonates with me. Studying abroad is a beautiful experience that offers so many life lessons but it can also be hard sometimes. Wish I could see this video the first time I moved abroad, I really do admire your transparency and how you allow yourself to be who you really are

I just had inkom week (I'm dutch) and I relate sm to the honest chat. I love meeting new people but it feels very lonely bc you don't know anyone that well yet.

6:09 I hope it has got better for you now, since this video was one year ago. I completely get the feeling, so so well, as someone who tends to stick to the people I have super deep connections to and who get socially exhausted, I completely understand the feeling. I also get jealous of the people who can just “feel comfortable” and “make friends” so easily, even though I know it may not be that simple for them. On a side note, I’ve just found your channel, and it is really nice to learn about Maastricht as fingers crossed I am applying next year after my gap :)

Girl I have a deep respect for you how you embarked on this adventure alone. You have moments of joy and sadness but that is also part of life and that is what you call growing up. That is extra difficult for you because you can't visit your family for a while, but try to learn Dutch as quickly as possible and also try to have conversations in the language. Then you learn the fastest and you can make many more contacts and you can also more easily compensate for the lack by making more intensive contact with the people around you. You only learn a language by allowing yourself to make mistakes. And in doing so, you also teach yourself to care less about what someone may think of you. As Dutch people we learn limited English and German and French at school, but the most important thing I learned about this at school is that people from these countries often do not speak Dutch and appreciate it enormously that you make an effort and are prepared to make mistakes. They allow you to make the mistakes. That also applies to Dutch people. They will appreciate you trying but also correct you right away. That's where their directness comes in again. But that directness can also help you learn very quickly as long if you don't care about making mistakes. Please keep up and hold on.

Oh, this video and your talk made me want to reach out and hug you. I relate to your feelings very well - the isolation, the foreign languages, the strangeness of things, the homesickness (if you remember I also moved to Europe from Canada) - and the thing is, I'm a grown-up! Please don't be hard on yourself - you are doing so well with all you've accomplished. You have a lovely personality and I love how self-aware you are. I'm really glad your perspective became more positive at the end of the video! I'm sending you a virtual hug!

Hi! I'm from Belgium and I may be going to UM myself to study psychology next year but I'm REALLY scared because I would be all by myself (nobody that I know is going to Maastricht).. I'm Also very introverted so I am already very nervous about what people will think about me when I will be there all by myself...

    • @fieliep1040

Trust me, don't worry!! Im going aswell and I already know that Maastricht is one of the most friendly places to study at. (I dont live too far away). it will probably be awesome to experience all of it... and maybe we may meet!

    • @arielsjournal
      @arielsjournal  2 роки тому +3

Hi! Don't be nervous, most students that move here don't know anybody. Alot of students come from far away and are in the same position as you. I'm also quite introverted but everyone is very friendly and open to meet over coffee or activity to get to know each other, even if it doesn't click. I suggest trying to find the UM whatsapp group for new psych students that usually starts circulating after acceptances come out, (found on the reddit page usually), and I'm sure you will meet many people in classes :)

hey girl! I know it's been a long time, but, how was your experience making friendships in Maastricht? I'm probably leaving soon for UCM, and I love my friends dearly and am heartbroken to leave them. But I also want to find comfort in other people and make new connections, and am afraid that might be difficult... by the way, thanks for your videos!!! they're just as amazing as you

hi! I truly appreciate your videos. I would like to ask if there are orthodontists or dental clinics where international students can get braces in Maastricht. It would be nice if communication could be done to the dentists in English. I'm planning to apply to Maastricht university.

Hi Daphne! I'm really not sure as that's not something I've had experience with here, but I do know that most businesses speak english or have representatives that speak english as most people do in the Netherlands. :)
