I watched Crazy Rich Asians with my Mom and I knew the plot already from reading the 3 books by Kevin Kwan and we both enjoyed the movie.I loved that Crazy Rich Asians stressed how much Asians really place family as a high priority in their life and how that can place boundaries in what you choose to pursue in life if you take the easy route and not pursue your passions. I related to you about that mahjong scene (wasn’t sure what was going on till the end) but the way Constance Wu delivered her lines at the end was simply powerful. I heard a lot of people gasp at that scene when Astrid finally confronted her husband and roasted him lol. The food scenes in Singapore made my mouth water and definitely marked it on my bucket list.

One of the best movies I have seen in my life. Especially since my mom is part Asian and I did understand how she felt when the mom just called her American and made her feel like she wasn’t wanted there because even I feel that about my friends just because I didn’t grow up with a full Asian parent, I was treated as if I didn’t belong because I didn’t know most of the traditions and that part just really touched me.

It was honestly so empowering and inspirational. RIGHT?! The themes were really real and relatable. I'm sorry that you felt that way at least one point in your life, but embrace your identity and your background because those are parts of you

GOOD review! Very THOROUGH! Thank you. Yes, in the mahjong scene, Rachel actually lets the potential mother-in-law win the hand, not only to buy time for herself to finish what she has to say, but also to show her humanity and empathy for her potential mother-in-Law.

Saw the movie yesterday. Amazing. Beyond amazing. It was beautiful, from the actors to the wardrobe to the music and scenery. Everone needs to see this film, and when you leave the theater, feel PROUD that you are ASIAN.
And to think the studios originally wanted Rachel's character to be WHITE!!!
Or imagine if Rachel is asian and her bf is white and taking her to meet this wealthy family and the white mom tells her, "You will never be enough!"
Constance Wu, actually dated a white guy in real life too!
But yeah, CRA was great. And the moment when you realize you're looking at Kina Granis on the big screen is pretty fucking incredible.

Have you seen "TO ALL THE BOYS I've LOVED BEFORE?" It stars a Vietnamese actress, and also the first time an Asian actress is lead of a teen romcom. It's new on Netflix and it's great and Lana did an amazing job. Definitely chck it out!

Here's what John Cho says about representation:
Is it a political thing? I really feel like it's this collective dream that we all want to be a part of. Culture is this thing that exists apart from our real life but is something we all have tacitly agreed to in America. And what film and television do, particularly in this country, is lay out the characters involved in this invisible agreement, and dictate who and what can participate. So I feel like it's tied up in this idea of personhood, that Asian-Americans are looking to be affirmed as real people.
I've seen many instances where we’re seen as a little less than human, or maybe a little more than human - like ultrahuman, rather than subhuman. What is wrong with film representation? Some of it is mechanical, surprisingly. I've thought about why Asian stars - from Asia, I mean - look so much better in their Asian films than they do in their American films, and now I can answer that to some extent. There's an eye, and it's not a malicious eye, which is a way that the people working the camera and behind the scenes view us. And then they process it and they put it on film. And it's not quite human. Whereas Asian films, they are considered fully human. Fully heroic, fully comic, fully lovely, fully sad, whatever it is. And it's this combination of lighting, makeup, and costume.
If you don't think of a person as fully human, you sort of stop short and go, That’s good enough. Do you remember Doug Liman’s film Go? I remember Taye Diggs in that movie, and he was charcoal black. I was surprised to see him in How Stella Got Her Groove Back - I realized that Go was not an accurate representation of his skin tone whatsoever. And I've met him. He was carelessly lit. Why is that? Why is one carelessly lit? The white people were carefully lit.

I am Chinese-American and I can relate to the movie as you did. I want to say so much but you expressed the important points so well. I'll just comment about the Mah Jong game which I do have a basic understanding but there was so much meaning to it. I saw the game of Mah Jong as an analogy of what was going on in her life. In short, she knowingly gave up the winning tile of 8 bamboo which is an auspicious number for Asians as it sounds phonetically like a Chinese word meaning 'to prosper'. Metaphorically, the tile represented her boyfriend, Nick, who she was willing to give up and let Eleanor have to win. She loved Nick but she understood how important family was to Nick besides the family fortune. At the end, Eleanor saw Rachel's winning hand that she had given up the winning tile for her to win. This selfless act changed Eleanor's heart and mind of Rachel as a possible gold digger. Rachel showed not only her love for Nick but also her integrity and selflessness. I'm sure others may have different interpretations but that's how I viewed this powerful scene in this great movie!

Someone also pointed out to me...the bamboo 8 tile, is also in the M shape which represents Mother (which is in Rachel's hand). Very symbolic!

I'm Chinese NYCer and in an interracial relationship. This movie was very relatable even if the audience watching isn't rich or crazy rich (as pointed out in this video). I am looking for for the books to read. I hope this movie turns into a trilogy.
