Bicycles without brakes are illegal in Japan. Most fixie guys I know here mount brakes. Yes I lived in NYC for a long time, and I say brakes are necessary in Tokyo. Ultra high population density, sidewalk riding alongside pedestrians as a social norm, very narrow and unparalleled roads of residential neighborhoods, everyone including elderly and inexperienced kids and housemoms on bicycles everywhere. =Every corner is a threat. It's very different from NYC. So yeah, Obey the law. Better safe than sorry.
Skidding through a patch on a tubeless tire could get messy. This is only my assumption but it’s as good a guess as any. She also had a double flat on that century+ ride so maybe she just put a tube in the rear cuz that’s all she had.
“Too American” is like saying “too wealthy” or “too physically fit”. But honestly, what does that even mean? When she bleeds, it’s red white and blue just like the rest of us Yanks. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
