I was checking on my Dad's cows one day, and found them very agitated. A quick count revealed a missing calf. I drove the fence line, and found a gap in a corner. A quick search in the thicket just beyond it, and I found the calf sleeping in the shade. I scooped up the week old baby, returned her to the field, and got busy fixing the corner so _Miss Houdini_ couldn't get out again.
As I worked, her momma came over and nuzzled me, just thanking me for finding and returning her calf to the herd. Dad's cows were so tame, you could pet them like a dog!

This is very relatable. When a calf rubs its neck and head on your leg like that, it's a show of affection and makes their mothers very, very jealous or extremely grateful.
Yeah the First option happened to me once , was petting the calf Just to look up and see mom had locked on me and was shuffling hoves.

@@varun009 It can be both. Trust me. I have a 13 year old Pinzgauer who uses me for his personal back scratcher and when he just wants a hug. I now have a seven month old bull who's doing the same thing. I know it's not just for scratching his neck when he wraps his tongue around my hand after rubbing his neck up my flank.

Yep! Especially since, according to farmers, cows aren't good parents. I'm pretty sure that adult saw the calf (for all I know those cows aren't related) getting pets and decided she'd see if the guy was passing them out like straw.

What a sweet calf! I was surprised when I learned as a kid that some cows can be just like dogs. My neighbor had about 5 adult cows and we always greeted each other at the fence. They were so glad to see me every morning because I fed them fruit and petted them.

I grew up on a ranch... There were some cows that were tame enough that you could approach their calf without any repercussions and their were others where you stood a good chance of becoming airborne... I remember one we had that was just bat-shit crazy and she would put you in the back of your pickup even if she didn't have a calf... The only reason she hadn't become hamburger meat (or been sold) was that she was profitable -- fast growing calf at the same time each year, never had a stillborn... Even a tame cow can hurt you without intended it if you allow yourself to be in the wrong place at the wrong time... If you get between a wall and an animal that weighs 1600-2600 lbs, all they have to do is lean into you like they do when they are jostling each other for feed and your little 200 (or less) lb frame is not going to fare that well... Highland cattle are quite a bit smaller than the breed that we raised, but they still could do some damage to a person by accident...

My father raised highlanders as well. They were gentle animals, but it didn’t feel like it when my brother would get the herd stampeding after me. I swear I could feel the earth moving under my running feet. I cleared more than one fence in my time.
Edit: It just came back to me (it has been a very long time), they aren’t a herd of highlanders, they are a fold.

It is truly amazing that a cow has the intelligence, rationality and patience to understand that after checking up on her calf that the man is no threat and let's him to continue to pet her calf. A lot of other farm animals don't think that way and automatically would've immediately attacked him had he would've got too close towards the calf in the first place.
in free nature they get water delivered by rain instead of human and find water by themselves, like a raven departing from a ship finds land, from a tv docu about the vikings
Or, domesticated animals simply don't see humans as a threat. You wouldn't be able to do this with wild bovines

Contained cattle are usually pretty relaxed, but free range cattle will fuck you up in a heartbeat. Having grown up around fenced-in cattle, I've always been pretty comfortable with them. But I was hunting in Colorado once and a lot of farmers out there let their cattle roam around in the mountains during the nicer months. I was hiking down off a ridge and ran into a calf and her mom, and that big bitch started stamping and false charging as soon as I got within fifty feet of them. I couldn't go around as that was the only way off so my Dad and I kind of just spoke calmly but firmly to her for a few minutes before she eventually relaxed and turned back. My Dad had his .45 ready just in case but that wouldn't have stopped her if things went south, so just be careful if you ever see a cow on the road- some of them don't consider you top dog.

Highland cows are just Like That apparently; one stuck its head in my tent once during the night, after slipping out of a nearby paddock, and I was terrified it would rip up the topsheet, so I just kinda patted its head for a minute and slowly pushed it out until it was completely free and it just... left? They’re just big babies who want affection.

In about 1991 my youngest son graduated from college. So I took him on a three week plus trip to the UK. We started in Scotland and he was so taken with the red Highland cows and bulls. We enjoyed pulling over and petting cows and sheep. It was fun.

We raised Shorthorns growing up and later rented land to someone who kept Highlands. The horns look wicked, but I was amazed how gentle they really were.
A friend had a breeding pair just like these and they truly are just a magnificent beast to behold- visually stunning! Calves dont cone cuter!

@@asanime7816 We do need meat. Meat is an excellent source of protein, magnesium, potassium, iron, vitamin D and vitamin B. Amazing combination of nutrients in one food. Meat is also yummy when spiced properly, you should try meat sometime.

This is why I always carried 3 or 4 ears of corn with me when I was checking calves. If I'm checking calves (dry, umbilical cord healed, feet hardened) and momma comes over to check you've got something to give to her to make her think you handling the calf is a good thing.

my amish neighbors have had calfs 2 times this year and both times we were allowed to pet em and if your ever feeling down, its crazy how much joy you get petting a baby heifer

It's coarse but not too rough. I like giving them scratches instead of stroking on top of the hair. But be carefull with patting! Some bigger animals like horses can have a sensitive skin and patting might not feel good.

Its probably material with bits wire so that electricity can run though it( like a small electric shock when you touch it).They have to be like that so then you can move around the boundries (for grazing ect)
It’s electrified, it will zap them pretty strongly if they touch it
Dont need much fencing when that line is electric lmao touch that and you will 100% pee and poop yourself. The cow will feel a huge pinch.

Without the horns they can do a lot of damage. Humans perceptions of what is or isn't dangerous is very low hence why we get killed easily. That cow wouldn't have any issue with killing that man with or without horns.

I’ve been around all types of cattle in my 61+ years and Highland calves are the absolute cutest of all cattle breeds in my opinion. I’m usually partial to Holstein cattle because I grew up on a dairy farm and that’s the breed we milked. But the Highland calves are by far the cutest, followed by Angus calves, and then Holstein calves. I guess I think Highland and Angus calves are the cutest because they are smaller, and the Highland calves are so fluffy.

Some momma cows also like to show off their babies
They have the instinct to show the calf around to the rest of their group, and they sometimes will show their babies off to their farmers as part of that instinct
It’s believed it’s to keep adults from mistaking the baby as an outsider calf and kicking it out
Though I don’t think that’s happening in this case
