- Decided to take a stab at covering this song since I absolutely LOVE this style of 80s music. Also took it as a challenge to record my voice using absolutely zero pitch correction, just like they would've done in the 80s. Hope you enjoy :D

This will be probably the best version untill Christopher Saint Booth gives us the original from master tape.
From what I understand, they found the master tapes for the instrumental part, but do have to re-record the vocals completely.
He posted something to his Instagram story {its gone now but I saw it} of him walking into a recording studio with the lyrics on a notepad, so he might be rerecording it

this song deserves to be in every 80's playlist. It perfectly captures the vibe of its era.
Great faithful recreation of the original. However, it lacks the energy and oomph of the original version. The drums and bass isn't quite as hard-hitting here imo (Maybe missing the LinnDrum?). The original song has a bit more of a punchy rhythm section and louder/driven bass. This is a bit lighter and cleaner sounding, a little more indie sounding - though maybe better suits younger fans. Great job though. Best cover yet.
the issue is that the drums are quite dry
the original song sounds to have done the typical 80s mixing trope of absolutely drenching the drums in gated reverb
Thanks man! And yeah I totally get what you mean, couldn't get the drums to sound exactly right but I ended up just kind of rolling with the whole thing being a little on the softer side. I think it works, but I'll definitely look into getting punchier drum sounds for future projects :)
you should try mixing each drum individually and piping it through the FreeverbToo VST, which has a built-in noise gate for the wet signal (and is, as the name suggests, free) allowing you to get them punchy 80s drums
alternatively you can send the drums to dedicated reverb buses, use your preferred reverb plugin with the dry gain all the way down and apply an external noise gate to that while having the drums also routed to a dedicated dry bus
@@TorutheRedFox Yeah I have been mixing drums individually, and I'll definitely have to check out that VST. But I'll have to try what you're talking about, I don't usually have separate busses for reverbs which is something I've gotta get in the habit of doing. appreciate the advice!
As a musician that's literally always struggling to make the VU meter move and groove like I want it to, I find 80s stuff impossible to replicate. That was a time of ridiculously highly produced music, using hardware that for some reason doesn't sound the same on a DAW. I've only ever seen one cover of this song that manages to make that 80s boomy meter shaking sound on a DAW, and even then it's far from perfect. If the end goal is dynamic contrast via gated reverb, compression and the like, then it's really difficult to obtain. Or perhaps I'm just ridiculously daft and need some help with my mixes lmao

The og just has a different kind of voice. More charm I’d say while this vocalist has a much more stereotypical voice. He might be objectively better at singing but the original voice fits the song more.
