- The Schwinn Junction 27.5-inch Mens Hybrid Bike from Walmart is one of the few big box commuter bikes that are worthy of being considered for a daily commute. Hybrid bike means it is also capable of being a great fitness bike, a casual riding bicycle, and commuter. There are a few price point components, but overall this is a decent bike for basic commuter use at a low price.

❌CORRECTION! The chainring is 42t ❌
For a commuter bike that range is more than enough.
That makes more sense! 36 crank X 14 cassette X 27.5 tire would have made the bike have too slow of a top speed.
I just bought this bike a week ago to ride on the freshly paved asphalt road in my neighborhood, its fast and comfortable to ride but I took it offroad and now it makes a knocking noise when I ride it on the road.
I recently purchased this bike from my local Walmart and took it out on its maiden voyage onto one of many rail trails in my area and found it to be a very nice bike for the price
I got this bike two weeks ago. For surface streets and easy trails. This is amazing for the price. I’ve changed several things. I’m 6’1” and I need a longer seat stem. That also changed the sear attachment to the better rail clamp. I also changed to aluminum pedals for a better foot grip and aluminum handle bar extdenders for more riding positions. The cost of these parts total $60 on Amazon. Well worth to have a good fit and comfortable ride.
I've got Priority taste and a Walmart budget. So I went to the big box store and bought a Junction. There were 2 of them, the first was assembled quite poorly. Bent hanger, no brakes whatsoever, scratched paint, etc. The one I purchased was very well put together. Took for a spin everything works as it should, it even shifts perfectly. I'm very pleased with it, especially considering the considering the sub $300 price. Look the bike over carefully and pick the best one is what I learned today!😊
Congrats on the new bike!
I'm a fan of buying it online, having it delivered to your Walmart, and then assembled (either by you or them) which avoids buying a return. I also still hate that they often will store bicycles outside in the elements. Love the tires that come with it.
First off I'm 72 years old and over 6 foot tall and hoovers around the 200lb mark, I have the Shwinn Junction and is well pleased with it, comfortable , shifts as it should and rides and handles as well as any bike of greater cost. Good bargain at $299.00 3:39
Schwinn knocks it out of the park on this one........I love the design and color.
As Wal-Mart bikes go, this is kind of nice for folks on a budget.
Bought one today! Didn’t research first. Just went into Wmart and looked a bunch of bikes over. This one stood out for what I want. Multi-use, mainly roads, one shifter(never really used all 3 gears of past bikes.), large tires. I’m a big guy so the seat had to go up. The low handle bars makes that a tad uncomfortable. I’ve ordered a riser to bring the handle bars up, and I’m taking the seat from my 22 year old Diamondback because it has a shock in the shaft. I think I’ll have the build I want and a great bike for the cost. It rides and pedals so smoothly.
Just bought this bike 2 days ago and I'm already loving it for biking touring around my neighborhood and to the library. Not bad for a $300 dollar multiuse bike of good quality.
Congrats on the new bike. Always good to hear someone happy with their ride
I've actually had my eye on the Schwinn Junction for a couple of months now. It feels very comfortable for me since I'm 5'10" as well. I'm gonna trust your review on this bike. As soon as I have $298 or at least $500 (which includes a helmet, lights for front and back, spare chain and tires, etc.), I'm gonna get it.
UPDATE: I got a generous bonus at my company's Christmas party so not only did I do my Christmas shopping, but I got the bike! I tested it out at the trailer park I live in and man let me tell you, my legs hurt from pedaling and shifting the gears and this is without a doubt a dream bike if I ever rode one.
In my opinion you should look at getting a lightly used Trek or Giant for the same price or even cheaper.
I'm glad I just watched this, I was looking for a hybrid bike to ride around town to get beck into shape, this may be the best starting point for me.
For about $100 to $200 more you can get an entry level specialized rockhopper. Even though it's a mountain bike, it's going to be lighter and faster, plus it'll have better components. Also, there are some good deals to be had on their sirrus line. I'm not a specialized fanboy. I just happened to see some of those deals at my local bike shop. I would almost always choose them over Wally world.
You should upgrade this one. It would be cool to see a commuter build.
Another good looking Schwinn. Great review as always,Kev!
I just bought this bike today. I really like it! Thanks for the thorough and honest review.
I haven't owned a bike (or ridden one) for forty one years. There are some muscles I obviously haven't used in a long long time as I was unsteady on it due to some particular muscle weaknesses, even though I am a very regular walker. You know what they say about never forgetting how to ride a bike? Well.. I know how to ride a bike but my old body seems to have forgotten the finer points.
Very much looking forward to giving my beautiful new Schwinn Junction another spin tomorrow, and the rest of the summer too!
..
Congrats on the new bike - good luck to the old muscles 😁
That bike is perfect for the intended purpose it was built for, you cannot ask for more in a commuter bike.
Frame shape easy to get on and off, beautiful color. Nice all around bike!
I just bought it today after your review . Thank you so much for an unbiased view .
Just purchased the bike. This was a nice review. Thanks!
It’s for men!! Get rid off it you byrd! I swear black women so masculine!
I bought this bike at Wal Mart about 2 weeks ago. All I had to do was pump up the tires and adjust the limit screws. It kept shifting from first to second gear by itself when going up a hill. This bike is good for tall riders as long as you aren't taller than 6 foot 2 inches.
I purchased this bike a few months ago. I've since added a Bafang BBSHD mid-drive electric motor to mine. Fun times, but would recommend upgrading the brakes if you choose to do this.
Great bike for the price. For the casual rider who wants to get some exercise, ride around the neighborhood, bike trail etc., it will get the job done. Not everyone wants or needs a thousand dollar bike.
Looks great! I'm partial to Schwinn cause that was my first bike. Before I got the Grit I was looking at the Schwinn Kempo. It reminds me of my brothers Schwinn mountain bike from the late 80's early 90's. As long as the still have it I will get a Kempo some day.
Looks like a fairly good town bike. I'm liking the whole phasing out on rim brakes where it's feasible.
Like you I think, I'm impressed with the logo design and how it was carried throughout the bike!
Another good review brother!!
That bike looks amazing the color really stands out great commuter bike for the price👍👍😀
This bike is a Beautiful example of "less is more"
To be honest its pretty good for a commuter bike. Esp the tires that comes with it. I would probably change the shifter to an sensah or ltwoo 7 speed trigger shifter and change the grips and pedals and its good to go as a daily commuter. Probably would install a pannier too. For the price its pretty good. Good enough for the majority of commuters
It seems that my local Walmart is horrible with bikes, (subpar assembly, damage, and storing bikes in the elements..) But this has led to me getting some spectacular deals. I have scored an Axum DP at $80.00, A Kent Trouvaille $90.00 (new in box, but it looked like the box had been hit with a baseball bat.. bike was fine but missing quick release), and a Schwinn Junction for $50.00 bucks. I have rebuilt all of these bikes at a fraction of the original costs. Good deals to be had if you keep an eye open. Thanks Kev for the awesome content.
Wow. I don’t like hearing of sub-par bike care by stores, but you can’t beat those deals. 👏
looks perfect as a transit hopper for Phoenix city streets. if it can boogie those tires are just the right width to take the heat
The value for the money is quite good. This is a lot more bike for $300 than a $300 MTB is, in my opinion.
That's a nice-looking with very good components for that price range there seems to be more interest in friction shifters and I consider the twist shifter a fraction shifter I've always liked those just took my trigger shifter off my bike and went back to a thumby friction shifter by micro shift and I think I'm going to like it. I really like both frame build and color and the seat . Looks to me like Schwinn has done a good job. Well done Mr Central.
it's interesting. I've never seen a neutral opinion on friction shifters. You either love them or hate them, lol. I never looked back after getting my first set of triggers (the FINISS, which Kev reviewed some years back). if I where going to change shifter types, it'd likely be to one of those fancy electronic shifters.
Friction shifters feel good. It is not that good for trail use, where you need to shift precisely when climbing, but for everything else, I like it
@@DFX2KX that would be nice I would love to try a wireless shifter as well.
@@komoonkh agree
Good offering. Even has dual water bottle capability and the set up ready to install a rear rack mountpoints without the need for clamps. Seat and handlebars both a bit wide for my perspective. And of course with any walmart bike, always replace the pedals as these plastic ones never last more than a few 100 miles. Thanks for the review.
Which rear rack will be good for this bike?
Don't really care much about Walmart bikes but I do seem to care what you think about them. As always, very entertaining.
For that price it makes a lot of sense even if has a twist shifter it doesn't look terrible
All my bikes are commuters, fatties, and mtb’. Schwinn is a great job on this bike. Great looks and great components!
Keep up the good work. Don't forget your trail rides.
5:16 Kev really said Microsoft instead of microshift 🤣. My autocorrect has done it before, but I've never accidentally said it.
Lol. I noticed it after I had completed voiceover, so I corrected it onscreen. That was a me fail, not autocorrect 🙃
Decent package for the price. Besides the drivetrain, there is not much else to upgrade IMO. I would maybe like to see a cassette in the rear with a 10-speed, and a real shifter. But for $298, it is well equipped for sure.
I’m glad I scored the first aluminum comp for 199 before Covid. Lol
I still can't figure out why people ride 2.0s on commuters. 1.5 is great and my preferred is actually 1.25 for ripping through alleys and rolling on streets for commuting. I think for $300 I might choose to find a vintage MTB and throw some slicks on it instead just to have better components. happy to see this at this pricepoint though in 2023.
That can vary depending on the area. Ride enough rough alleys and the larger can come in handy. That said, most of my commuting was done on tires more narrow
I still run my AL Comp's factory trail tires as a commuter. I've *considered* throwing slicks on it, but I'm also a lunatic who'll ride the bike through mud and snow, too, so....
650B 47mm (i.e., wide like this bike stock) WTB and the like tires at 30 PSI are very popular in my area. The tires are setup this way are very supple and give a smooth, yet still fast ride. There's no use for a suspension fork with these tires. Schwinn should have used a rigid fork on this bike to save much weight. But I know the targeted buyer for this bike thinks that fork will actually do something and make the roads "so much less bumpy".
Tomorrow im going to get the Schwinn AL Comp or this bike. I live in a urban area so i will be just riding it in the city. I am 6 feet tall and weigh 270. I worry about my weight breaking these bikes. Which one would you recommend?
Nice looking bike! Thanks for another excellent review.
I purchased a Schwinn GTX 1 last year. Came with that Micro Shift stuff. I know they switched to Pacific But why switch from Shimano parts?
For the price I think they hit the markrt.More that a fitness bike withe wider tires ad the light fork. It will take up the rough stuff an roll on the pavement. If you need more its not the bike for you and you steo up to a more off road type mtband if its too much dial back to a cruiser. Seems the like great middle and for only $300.
For years Walmart carried Schwinn Trailway hybrids. I owned a couple and enjoyed them. However, I have been waiting for what seems forever for Schwinn to finally ditch the 3x in favor of a 1x drive train. Kudos. Just wish the free wheel was a 11- 34 mega range. And I feel it's priced about $50 higher than it should. Otherwise, it is a terrific looking bike and should satisfy most buyers.
Who makes a 7 speed 11-34t freewheel ?
@@Not_Sure_ no one, i guess they meant cassette
Thank you for the 36 poind weight listing...what walmart bike would be lighter ?? Got to haul it up steps
The funniest part to me is that this bike is effectively aimed straight and me and going "Hey, you know what you *actually* use that Alumium Comp of yours for? Yeah here's something made to do that" rack mounts, factory street tires, and all. would be curious to know exactly how much room is inside that triangle, though, like if there's enough room to squeeze a proper frame battery, because this does scream E-bike conversion.
I work at Target and assemble bikes. We have a Schwinn almost just like this except called the Schwinn Trailway, ours has 28 inch wheels which is really weird. It also has an adjustable stem that you can raise or lower to your liking but it doesn't have disc brakes.
Apparently (from a quick google search) 28" is common for specifically road/commuter bikes; it's just not normally _called_ a 28" wheel, it's 700c size, so a standard road bike wheel. Very easy to find replacement tubes and tires, only downside would be if you want wider tires, you don't have nearly as many options as a mountain bike sized wheel would (though they do make 'fat' tires for gravel bikes, they just won't be nearly as wide as a regular MTB tire).
Do you think the Junction can be transformed into a mountain bike? And what parts would you recommend changing?
I'm enjoying mine as well. Great bike for a great price.
Again Kev, another great review. 👍
Troy 😎
P.s Roku 😁
Nice review. I find myself dumping my other channels I follow and keep coming back here. Lol I recently purchased a Northrock XC27 from COSTCO. Could you look into this bike and maybe consider it for a future video? It's GIANT built bike branded for COSTCO so I think you might be surprised by it. $399.00 purchased just days ago. Keep the videos coming!
Thanks for watching and congrats on the new bike. Sadly, we don’t have a Costco near me, but I hope to one day get my hands on some of their Northrock bikes. I hear good things about them
Thank you for another excellent review !!!
What size bike do you recommend? I’m 5’6 looking for a hybrid. To ride through the city and get a little more active
I just got a huffy parkside yesterday from Walmart for 250. Wouldn't it be worth going back and swapping for this schwinn for the extra 50 dollars? It's my first bike since i was a kid and i only got it to ride around town with my son
For me the Junction is the better of the two - disc brakes, etc - but any bike you can ride and that makes you happy is the best bike for you. I would ask myself if I’m happy with what I have. If so, then ride on and be happy
This bike seems quite pleasant. It’s what it needs to be in the price range.
Kev, I noticed the tag checking out your Chuck Taylor's... rubber side down.
Troy 😎
That would make a good bike for a Bafang BBHD 1000w ebike motor 😀 conversion and upgrade as You go !
Good to know! This is more or less what I'm looking for in a bike at this point in my life.. I haven't ridden a bike 'daily' since I was a young teenager though, lol.. Just want something to cruise around town in and maybe some of the local city type parks.. nothing crazy.. Is there anything else, in this price point, that seems to be this good? I'm 6'1" btw.
I would change the grips and swap to a trigger shifter.
But this is on my list now.
Could be a good candidate for off-road tires also.
In my opinion a rigid fork would of been a better choice. Save the weight and use the dollars elsewhere or lower the price point.
Given our degrading city streets it comes in handy
I found one hiding at Walmart. After some tuning, dealing with a tire with a damaged bead, a destroyed crank via incorrect installation by the store, it's not that bad. Though I'm really thinking of throwing a 36t in the front. These hills are killer.
Great video Kevin.
I honestly think the price is close to fair, being that the components are a little better, and the frames with internal cable routing are usually found on the more expensive bicycles..
What tubes does this use? It looks like it could be 700c? Also is there enough clearance for a rear rack mount? That disc caliber looks like it'll get in the way. Also wished the rear wheel had a quick release too.
Ibera and Axiom make racks that explicitly account for the disc. I've had both (currently an Ibera, and it's just wider to clear the caliper, the axiom streamliner used little arms that moved it back a bit out of the way) and they work well. As mine's on an Aluminum Comp, I have a seatpost clamp for the upper rack mounts, but you wouldn't need such for this one.
650B (also weirdly called 27.5"), not 700c.
Will this be a good choice to haul a kid trailer with?
good budget commuter, nice colour too
29. Inch front wheel to smooth out the bumps and shimano hyd brakes for those sudden stops and it would be great
A street mullet
I just put a 52/40 crankset on my walmart mongoose. I put higher pressure 1.75 26’s on. Old steel pedals. And I staked the wimpy forks extended, with eighth inch thru bolts.
These things were immediately on my mind to do, after riding it home from the store, and this is what Walmart should offer; imo.
There seems to be much shooting around the target instead of nailing an application, the urban semi-mountain bike for two hundred bucks should go fast, not get flats, have springs under the seat and the seat positions above the crank more, instead of behind. A janky front suspension is worse than just a solid one; when lifting the bars to clear a curb, you’re fighting all that collapse of the front suspension, only to almost bottom it out just by climbing on.. and so in many aspects the WM bikes of the ‘90’s were, even with their one-piece cranks, kinda good, but we’ve moved on from there into this scene which always leads to more trips to the parts store.
Can you give the stand over height measurement? I'm 5"6 and want to see If I'm tall enough for the bike. TY love your videos
I'm a big fan of schwinn, and just so happens I'm looking for a new bike for this summer
Kev , I'm 6'-3" , which Walmart bike do you recommend for a commuter, fitness and casual riding bike.
As a bike mechanic and a 6' rider, I would recommend either going to a bike shop for sized frames or going secondhand if that fits your budget better. Someone your height needs an XL frame and Walmart bikes tend to only go up to a large (and a rather small large at that).
That’s tough as most Walmart bikes aren’t built for riders over 6’2”. That said, I’m 5’10” tall. Most people my height get sized to a 19” frame at a bike shop. I prefer 17” frames, so if you are like me and like a smaller bike frame than usual for your height then options are there. If you fit a more traditional sizing profile then Bob is correct - XL sizes would be needed and WM just doesn’t have that in their current lineup
Do a review on the Schwinn Trailway 700c x 28 . I love that bike
So the front tire comes off easily to transport?
Thanks for the great video, I am 5'3'' with 30 inch inseam, would this work for me ? I know it says 5'6" but do you think I should go for it. Whats the standover height of it if you can share it would be helpful. Thanks.
I would think it way too tall for someone 5’3”
Project Junction coming up?
Not likely. It is being donated to a non-profit
@@KevCentral 😞It would make a great project bike. I'd love to see the direction you'd take it in. Project it, and then donate it.
Which is better, this bike or the Kent Avalon?
What is the MAX tire width clearance of this bicycle?
is it an upright sitting position?
What is the max width bike tire that will fit on this frame?
Actually it looks very nice and has a great amount of features 60 mm of travel would be perfect for around samurai new from ask me to move her Schwinn bicycle downstairs it was a woman's model perhaps 10 years probably 700cc wheel set women's model Schwinn with linear brakes aside from the handlebars being narrow I really like the way this bike felt just from pushing it and made note of the quality that it had compared to other big box bikes I noticed lately I've been overlooking Schwinn reviews in my viewing I decided to start watching them more often
Yikes! A bit heavy for a hardtail. My heaviest full suspension bike is 34lbs! So where is the weight? Wheels or fork?
Unless you intend to race like a 100 miles on it, a heavy bikes overall mass contributes like 1-2% to the total weight.
I like this bike, it weighs nothing. Super smooth
Having twist shift not good as hand knocks it . Used to have it happen when climbing, you would stand to pedal and hand knock gear into wrong one forcing you to get off.
The MicroShift twist shifter takes more force than the Shimano twist shifters. So that makes it much less likely to shift when you don't want to.
@@lastfm4477 OK thanks.
This would make a great e bike kit bike.
What if im 5 foot 5 will i be comfortable on this bike or wil it be to big
Hi do you know where I can by similar tires for this bike ?
I got one today. Not rode it yet.
I just bought this bike from Walmart! (And same price!) thanks for the video to get me started!
Do you plan to keep the Junction?
It is being donated to a local non-profit
I like it, the frame is cool but don't really need another bike. (Own 7 bikes)
Could have used a quick release rear hub.
Im 6-2 1/2 should i upgrade to a larger bike,or will this bike be comfortable with the 1/2 in height difference i exceed
That would be a tight fit. Do you like your frames to feel small?
@KevCentral I would have to sit on a few. It's been over 15yrs since I rode a bike. I've been looking at the 29in bikes since I posted comment. More than likely to just going to buy that instead
Love mine but I immediately replaced the horrible seat.
Multi use commuter bikes... Looks like that would be a bike to be used for deliveries.... I'll just swap out the drivetrain to a more range
I was just watching the original one you did 3-4 hours ago
I’m not sure which original you’re referring to 🤔
That really looks like the old frame of the blue aluminum with e different head to
It does resemble the old comp frame
👍🏻👍🏻
My commute it 7 miles total. Will this hold up?
I would think so as long as it is setup and maintained properly
@@KevCentral I've been buying cheap bikes from a pawn shop. Then use em until it gets stolen.
But I'm able to protect a bike now. Junction is what I'll get lol
It seems to be only as complex as it needs. Not trying to impress anyone. Could make biking "do able" for folks.
What is the Weight Capacity for this Bike?
250lbs
