Thanks, ActionKid! This is another one that hits home, as I was born in Mineola and this video was posted the day after my birthday! Much love, and thanks for all your work for the community!
If you want to see a beautiful part of Long Island in Suffolk County take the train to Cold Spring Harbor (Port Jefferson line) and walk around the small village and yacht harbor.
Yeah used to love walking around port jeff we sometimes took night cruises out from there too. Go out for a few hours. Drinking eating music this was in the late 70s. Bet its real expensive now nassau cty had the old westbury gardens i went to once. Very pretty maybe they have more in nass. but i was in suff.cty
Scott Briggs dude I’m 29 years old I been to Roosevelt field a thousand times but your kinda right about mineola whenever i go I juts walk around or take the train to oyster bay.
@@thiscorrosion900 im 60 and grew up on long island in suffolk cty left at age 42 . i could tell you have fond memories of it .so do i .it was great growing up there. Still miss it
Countless times my mom and I walked this bridge. I remember when there weren't bars along the brick wall. Stores have changed. I can still remember the thrift store with the lovely old ladies.
Hi Ken, Each day better! Roosevelt Field , Mineola and maybe someday CARLE PLACE where I lived when I was young or Jones Beach or Hamptons in the Summertime. Thank you for this video.
You strolled throughout my home....I was born and raised in what is now Winthrop hospital. (Nassau hospital) and lived in New Hyde Park...Hung Out throughout Mineola...my father had a business there as well. Recognized many buildings and of course roads, streets etc but oh so many changes too. I've been off the Island for 28 yrs. Amazing to see that still after all these yrs Nassau is still car-centric. That won't ever change. Thanks for the memories and the walks. Lord knows we did lots of those back in time!!
Went to visit my college roommate in LI one summer. His parents were both MDs I believe they lived in port Washington An awesome memory they took me also to shelter island! I suspect they had a poor opinion of me but kept it well hidden! I was in awe of all their achievements back then. And their superior intelligence .Haha I still have very fond memories especially of my roommates grandmother who gave me the gift of true ❤️! Through an antique illustrated Book on Flora she gave me that I cherished!
So glad to see you did my hometown! My advice next time you visit mineola, go down jerciho tpke from herricks toad towards glen cove road. Also check out memorial park for sone subutban chill. Looking forward to garden city, williston park, and Albertson! Also Oyster Bay for more Teddy Roosevelt history!
Hicksville is interesting, AK. It’s sort of like the suburban Jackson heights with a lot of Indian restaurants. It’s great not to have to trek into JH for a big selection of south Asian food. Also, has two big Indian supermarkets and two big Korean supermarkets.
I am a Texan with a deep fascination and love for NYC (been there only once). One of my dreams is to visit every inch of all 5 Burroughs, your wonderful videos makes this a near reality. One of your subs. mentioned Conn. Boston would also be great (lots of history). One more thing, when you stop at a local eatery for lunch, seeing the type of cuisine available would be intresting.
I’m a native Islander. Just so you know. LI and NYC are two separate places. Although Brooklyn and Queens are at the western tip of Long Island, going east for over 80 miles are Nassau and Suffolk Counties. NYC and Long Island are vastly different places.
Born & raised in Nassau County, left shortly after high-school for the Marines. 30 something years later I've still not returned. I need to visit before I'm dead lol.
4:31 That Burrito/taco place is really good. I've been there only once though. And right around that corner is probably the best burger place I've been to. It's called P.S. Burger. You should go and eat there someday.
MINEOLA! I grew up in this town.....you started at the hospital i was born at, walked by the former music store where i got my first guitar lessons, walked past my childhood home....Mineola is a great town.....note it's a terrible place to drive or park!
another great video and guess what. the police station is literally right across the street from my job on franklin avenue and 14th street. thats crazy you were right by my job and i just started watching your videos. would have been cool to run into you. stay cool actionkid!!!!
Thanks for sharing this video. I am originally from the town of Westbury. Lived there 17 years. Memories of my childhood and teenage years. 1975 to 1992. 😃
Mineola is just another shitty little nothing village on Long Island. It's on the way down, just like most places in Nassau County. Even Garden City (which is right next to it) is deteriorating. Taxes are outrageous, housing prices are in the stratosphere, and areas roughly around Mineola have increasing crime problems. People are moving out of, not into, this area.
@@mdoe3087 Nope, it's the homegrown version that causes most of the serious crime problems. And in twenty years those fancy houses on Stewart Avenue in GC will all be carved into rooms and apartments as the area continues to deteriorate. Years ago Elmont and Hempstead were decent areas: now look at them. A few months ago I considered opening an office in Mineola and the place is so damned depressing I decided against it. I'll probably open up closer to the north shore or maybe Westchester County.
Why haven't I seen this video? Mineola is a decent town, working-class community. My friend +pinepowerli lives in Mineola, he says it has its ups and downs. I don't know if you've tried Costa Nova Waffle, its a block north of the train station, it is delicious.
As someone who has traveled all over North America, and with the exceptions of parts of Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New England, there’s not a suburban culture anywhere in the USA like Nassau county.
6:50 Taking the subway to Jamaica and thence the LIRR might be cheaper ($2.75 vs. $7.75 off-peak) but is a lot longer in time (an hour vs. 20 minutes on the LIRR).
The train station has changed. I still see traces of the old one and some of the builidings across the street are the same but the businesses have changed. The residential area you passed thru look like some Levitt houses remodelled - they were originally built in the late 1940s and have probably changed occupants many times. My house in Carle Place used to stand out when you were driving the Northern State Pkwy - It was on a slight rise and stood a little above the others. Still did in 1961. What I have seen of the house, I would no longer recognize if I didn't know the address. Anyway.......

It must be really early in the morning possibly even a weekend morning. Rush hour traffic in that area is a nightmare. It can take you 30 minutes to drive one mile at rush hour. Looks like a ghost town, has to be very early on a holiday or something. Mineola is the county seat so many of those buildings are law offices, government buildings ranging from the health department to every government department you can think of.
Looks clean and nicre houses but where are the real people and shops ?? Do t know what time it was but how many people could count on your hand unless everyone who lives there was at work . Looks dead

Probably even nicer in the spring & summer when foliage lends vibrancy to everything.

Mineola has a large Portuguese community.
Yup. There's a side-street where the yellow line painted on the asphalt, also is painted green and red in either side to represent their flag.
