Adam Savage Installs His New Lathe Chuck!

  • Adam gets excited by the prospect and potential of a new lathe chuck he just received, using a collet system he's envied for years. It'll be more gentle on materials he's machining than the six jaw chuck he normally uses, but will require a bit of clean up and calibration. But its accuracy is what ends up surprising Adam as he spins it up for a test!

      Also Collets are self centering. While 3 or 6 Jaw does get close when centering, the are not as precise as a Collet. 🙂 Like Adam pointed out you can center a 4 jaw very precisely, but you have to do it manually and its time consuming.

      Dear Adam... When you were a starry-eyed young scene-painter and model maker with dreams of working in movies, did you ever imagine that one day there'd be a one-reeler film with the gripping title "Adam Savage Installs His New Lathe Chuck!" and tens of thousands of people would flock to see it on opening day?

      Measuring tools are the holy artifacts of the machine shop. Both because they are treated with the reverence they deserve and because they're the only thing you can't reliably make yourself (at least the most precise ones you have). Without having high quality, well treated and certified measuring equipment you have no idea whether what you make is within tolerance or not.

I’m very familiar with the collets, indicators and such. Many a bruised knuckles hitting the spinning chuck. I used a brass bar to tap on pieces to bring them to specs. Even seeing you lay the cloth down for cleaning I did… I learned a lot from really talented workers..it was not my forte, but the benefits were good, I learned a trade and now I stock dairy overnights in a grocery store..to which I prefer…thanks for the memories

    @16:54 Regarding a place for the chuck key. At my school (probably after some scary mishap) the teachers built a chuck key holder for each lathe that acted as a safety switch for the lathe. If the key wasn't in its holder the lathe wouldn't start. But then again we almost always used the three jaw chucks. Might be a bit of a different problem if you tend to switch.
    Impressive performance from the new chucks btw honestly gave me a bit of goosebumps.

    • @Kenionatus
      @Kenionatus Рік тому +1

      Was just thinking about that and was thinking back to the machines I used. The solution that the newer lathes I used went with is a cover over the chuck you have to lift in order to insert the key. It adds one more movement to the clamping/unclamping action, but it's independent of the chuck. The cover never got in the way because it was only over the chuck and partially transparent.

    Speaking of larger collets, your six jaw looks to have reversible jaws, and I'm guessing your three jaw as well. That means you can run soft jaws on them, which are effectively custom collets, easily adapted to any purpose and perfectly concentric if machined in situ.
    Generally, while delicacy can be a reason to use a collet, the main factors are better grip and repeatability. They can also be used with bar feeders to continuously feed stock without stopping the lathe.
    And good gosh: that 5C chuck is 6-7 thou out? You should be within a few tenths. Matt @ Precision Matthews had some really good pricing on a Bison version a few years ago. It was maybe 2 tenths out?
