I’m currently in the United States Marine Corps and also have lived in Ohio my entire life. I am currently studying prelaw with hopes of attending law school someday upon getting out of the corps. I have never seen a film I’ve related more to in my entire life. This film was spot on and extremely relatable to the point where I cried from it.

Praying for you to break you family bondage. May God Bless you Semper Fi! I am a daughter of a marine, who came from a place called the valley. Hillbilly 7th grade education and is now retiring from a management position at a billion dollar company. He attributes so much to the Marines. He also served in Vietnam. So for your children and grandchildren Livestrong ❤️

I was moved to tears at the powerful role memaw played when her daughter dropped the ball. It was extremely relatable if you come from bad choices but a strong familial bond. I would recommend watching this movie. It's a must see for those who need to learn compassion for others esp their own wayward family members. Some give up too soon on their own children & write off their grandchildren instead of fighting for their less-than-perfect offsprings. 5 out of 5 🌟

I just watched this movie on Netflix and found it to be a really good, and inspirational story.
It gave me great respect for JD Vance and makes me believe he is exactly what our country needs as the VP for President Trump.
For decades our poor and underclass have been looked down upon and politicians have done little to improve these people opportunities for any kind of meaningful upward mobility. The USA is great because of its people and not just the elites who feel they are better than everyone else.

Does EVERYTHING have to be political? Strong family is political? Family support is political? I have a MIND OF MY OWN. This movie was OUTSTANDING! Do NOT, NOT, NOT listen to these biased puppet critics. This movie was REAL, HONEST & TRUE TO MANY LIVES. The Oscars are a joke. You'll NEVER see a moderate win ever again! GO SEE THIS MOVIE. If you think this movie is “outstanding,” you do so because it is a Hollywood movie that appeals to your political interests. Most people think the movie is bad or mediocre because it is poorly acted, scripted, photographed and edited. The central protagonist is devoid of any personality, but we’re supposed to empathize when he blows up on a potential employer for a thoughtless but minor offhand remark. Most people need more of a motivation to justify a two and half hour movie than ‘wants to go to an Ivy League so he can work at a think tank.’ Point being, the irony of this discourse is that the people raving about the film are doing so for political reasons, when the majority of its detractors simply didn’t engage with it on the basis of its lame protagonist and poor execution. It’s really not that big a deal. YOU and likeminded individuals have made it into a political issue.

As a Tennesseean, this movie was both heartbreaking and inspirational at the same time! It was an outstanding movie, and was as real as can be! My mom's family is right beside where J.D.'s family was from in Kentucky. The movie was very true to the culture. Grandma was called mamaw, there was always swimming in the creek, riding your bike to the creek on the dirt roads, kids going too far, adults hitting kids for being idiots, living down the holler, and a huge amount of families would move to Ohio to find work including my mother's parents. Once they retired they moved back down to Eastern Kentucky. Ron Howard did a great job!

I came from a background where I was the first in my entire family to go to high school so I can relate to JD going off to Yale and working three jobs to pay his way through law school. If this was about a black family it would be an easy Oscar but it is about poor whites and the elite don’t care about those. A lot of the critics appear to hate the movie because it tells a story where hard work and family support can pull someone out of poverty and suffering. They didn't like it because everything bad solely has to do with the government, not individual choice (which is weird, because the movie does not appear to be political at all). I guess trying to frame the struggles White Americans living in rural, forgotten areas of the US in a sympathetic light was not politically correct. White Americans can't suffer! They're privileged!

Is that how you interpret THEIR story of overcoming and thriving?
His grandma admitted to jd that she could have done better with with his mom bev or something. That’s a big thing! When mamaw saw how broken her daughter was, in spite of her age, bad health and poor finances, mamaw had to learn to step up for her grandson JD.
Mamaw may not have been there for her daughter when she badly needed her but ...She did eventually stepped up for his grandson JD. Is that not a hero’s journey and an absolutely wonderful character arch?
JD’s mother suffered through a lot of trauma during her childhood. She was able to graduate nonetheless and became a nurse. What an accomplishment! However, life happened and it got the better of her. She messed up really bad many times. THUS, her kids had to grow up really fast. Her daughter had to be there for her younger sibling JD who was the author. What a big role to play for such a young lady. She could have said , my brother is not my problem. Moreover, She also had help their mother when JD left to study. She could have said again: i have a family of my own to worry about. My mom is not anymore my problem. She just continues to mess up everything for everyone. But she didn’t! Is that not a hero’s journey as well?
Her son the author had to grow up fast and listen to his grandma if he is going to get a chance at making a different life for himself. Is that not enough of a hero’s journey for you?
In spite of the tumultuous relationship of the 2 grandparents, though living apart, they still love each other as a family.
No matter how broken and dysfunctional they all were, they clearly loved each other and showed up when they could.
They did the best way they could the best way the knew how.
For some of them, “when they knew better, they did better. “ ( maya angelou)
With all due respect, Did we watch the same movie OR Is this your politics talking?
Btw, i am not American. I am from Asia. Living in a third world country., I see their story everywhere. And i know a lot do not do as well as them because they do not have their family’s cohesion.
Here extended family structure and support also play a very important to the success of the members.
Faith in God , Tough love, taking personal responsibility, sharing what you have (with your extended family members) .. . ARE ALL integral parts of a successful family who were not born with means (at least for us here).

After Republican VP JD Vance, would they still make the movie now? I know that CBS WOULD NOT EVEN SHOW anything about this book or movie. (BIAS CENSORSHIP DEMOCRAT NEWS - obviously, this fell outside your conservative hate radar!) Once it is determined that you are a conservative, WOKE Hollywood/Media will destroy you. Why CBS Ratings are SO LOW!!!

Was a fan of Howard, but he really blew it with Elegy, which is a low-Q stack of stereotypes about Appalachia that aren't true and hurt Appalachian people.

The writer and Ron Howard nailed it. However, they left out the good times these people have. Did it look like they were missing out on anything? 4 wheelers, bikes, parties, family, neighbors, cars, free time, rivers and swimming, etc. These people have some great times. They do struggle with a cycle of poverty and addiction. Its not a political movie. Stop trying to make it be something its not.
