Learn how to paint water reflections in your landscape paintings in this tutorial with Canadian landscape painter Greg Hargarten as he paints a large painting in the studio.Greg Hargarten is a Saskatoon based painter, musician and graphic artist. Love your paintings and tutorials, Greg! You asked about reflections - I often add some horizontal breaks in the vertical reflections to indicate ripples on the water. A few bubbles or small light-colored pieces of floating debris help enhance the surface of the water.

Thank you. Very helpful. I usually paint quite small in soft pastels but have a commission for a larger 24x48 painting. I am thinking I’ll use oil. It’s a large water bird reflected standing in shallow water, with a strong early morning light coming over its shoulder, casting long shadows across the canvas. Background is a tall grass shoreline. And an early morning sky. But the bird is the subject, not the sky so can’t over do that.

What kind of brush are you using?.
As you know, I love your work Greg!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. This is a really helpful video and an excellent way to teach. I have to ask.. what type of brush is it you're using, that fairly large one? Also.. I'm new to acrylic, what medium do you use with Golden Open acrylics?
Thanks so much Lynda! The big brush is a Connoisseur #24 I believe it's the biggest one they make. As far as the Open Acrylics, I don't use any medium, although I sometimes add Golden Open Gel to to make the paint go further. Hope that helps!m :)

How long Greg, would it take for that painting to dry using the Open colours? Love your adventures :)
Thanks Maureen! The Golden Opens will dry in 1-2 days depending on how thick the paint is. I find if I need them to dry faster, I can use a fan or a blow dryer to speed up the process. Hope that helps! :)
Great video and super painting! My question, do you not use ANY water with your acrylics? I am an oil painter but trying to switch to acrylics. The Golden Open acrylics sound amazing! We reside in Central Alberta and as you know how dry the air is here, these would be perfect for plein aire painting!
I usually use water mostly when I am tinting the canvas before I start. The water thins the paint and allows a bright/transparent ground to paint over. I like covering the white canvas with a colour, it will always poke though in some places in the painting and often help give the piece some unity. Yes, the Golden Open paints are great for plein air and are the reason I switched in the first place.
Thank you for your reply! I had no idea that Open Acrylics do not require water all of the time! Well, as soon as I finish a few hundered, or so it seems, of the paint tubes I already have, I will give it a go!

Hi Colleen, that brush is a 3" Connoisseur. I believe I bought it on Amazon. I also often use regular house painting brushes, however they do not make the same narrow marks the Connoisseur can. Hope that helps. :)
