I think 10+0 is a happy medium. I love your 15+10 vids because you can go in-depth, but you're right, there isn't a ton to analyze when you're facing 600s. I think switching at around 1200-1400 is unlikely to bother anyone.
Yeah, I also feel like 10+0 is the best time format, also because (just like in the 5+0 Speedrun) Danya can focus on the "instinct" part as there is no increment
but 15+10 also means that the 600s will have more time to think (meaning hopefully A LOT less blunders). i don't blame him for not doing it, it must be boring to play, but for us, he could just cut it out. i'm not saying he should do that btw, imo there is no point in playing in this rating at all, especially if he's gonna play moves like 8:23. if you see a 600 playing this move, it's only because he blundered
Yeah, it’s very rare that people use the additional time until the 1500s, anyway. 15+10 just results in people with 17 minutes to spare in a completely losing position.
In my opinion, you are the best chess educator on this planet. Maybe some individuals are better but the combination of reach, accessibility, experience and ability is unparalleled.

There are people arguing for the 5 minute control - as a side project, it’d be interesting to see you teach intermediate players how to play faster time controls, but that’s what it would be for. 15+10 at high levels is an absolutely unreal format for teaching chess concepts, it is what makes your content LEAGUES better than any resource I’ve ever found on the internet. Puzzles, watching GM games, nothing will come close to simply watching you explain what the important concepts are in depth, because chess is a game that requires this understanding first and foremost. Others are saying they are “tired” of the old format. As of yet, I think your fans are FIENDING for more games. I must emphasize this - there is NO ONE doing what you’re doing. If you do do the 5 minute series, please don’t do it at the expense of the most uniquely powerful instructive tool of a GM playing rapid games with the intention of teaching. You are an amazing content creator and educator but you also give off great values as a human being, which is even more difficult and valious. Ty for existing and for putting your time and effort into our perspective Danya
Switching to the longer format is definitely the right call - maybe a blitz speedrun alongside, but overall having the time to deeply explain everything is more beneficial overall i think
Nice instructive games thanks ! I think the old schoolers refer to it, as the extended fianchetto. But I like the hyper fianchetto too. I think its definitely a hyper fianchetto when you put it on-prise because of a tactic. That was a fantastic example bye the way. Great job !
I'm so proud that I found Ne5 against the scholar mate and I never knew if it was good or bad. It's the first time I see it and by none other than Danya! 💪💪
I was really enjoying the 5 min speed run games, I’m trying to improve at that increment and it was very helpful seeing your thought process. I primarily play 10+0 so I think that is a good mix of both as well.
At 19:04 white does have a way of winning a piece by first playing e4 and then following up with f3 and g4. It's obviously still completely winning, but this shows exactly why it's better to avoid complications when you are completely winning
In the first game the most important, the most instructive move for me was pawn to c3, because (and I mean this honestly) you said so. For me, the biggest block to moving forward in chess was thinking my ideas alternatives to GM plans. It's so very important to deflate the ego and accept that if the GM says so then your move is bad. Deal with it, or quit playing.
18:20 e4 instead of g4 is an interesting line here. (Bxe4 f3 Bf5 g4 is like the line shown but white has made space for the king to avoid the checkmating idea) it seems like black will lose the piece but can pick up three pawns for it
at 2:33 after ..c6 isn't d6 by white a little annoying? By the way I think it's a good call to go 10+0 at these lower levels, and switch to 15+10 when the opponents get more serious
I love these Speedrun videos because your level of teaching and explaining is greatly impactful! Thank you and I am absorbing this knowledge and understanding. Keep up the great work!
HI danya, i wanna say thank you first for the high quality videos. And a suggestion I wanna make is it would be very helpful if you could put the link to the game in the description.
3:00 isn't Ng4 obvious and winning? Opens up an attack on the knight and theeatens the dark squared bishop. If the bishop moves you take the knigt. Only other variation I considered Nxc6 Nxe3, Knight takes queen, Knight takes queen with a fork on the rook and white's knight is trapped. I might be missing some tricky defence
Danya, at 6:05, thoughts on Knight E4 instead of D5? I'm thinking about the mounting pressure on D2, plus the C file and disconnecting white's queen + knight
I'm officially going to refer to Ba3/Bh3 etc as hyperfianchettoes from now on and claim that it has been given that name by a well respected grandmaster (which is true) and act as if everyone else is a fool for not knowing this haha.
If I want to learn an opening, I think 5 minute Blitz is perfect because I can see how you play all sorts of different variations (full Jobava London speedeun would be awesome). If you are trying to teach other parts of the game, 10 + 0 is perfect.
18:21 I found Bh6 which is just....excellent....threatening mate and black has no time to take and has to block.... [edit haha, should have watched the next seconds, although I think the immediate Bh6 is cleaner.]
Plenty of blitz online to watch- but there’s only one Danya. I think the quality allowed from longer time controls makes it ideal. Ten mins is definitely a good medium.
I was surprised you traded rooks rather than playing Bh6+ at 7:35, esp since you're always reminding us that alarm bells should ring when major pieces align on diagonals. Not that the outcome was in doubt but I'd rather keep my rook and exchange the bishop for a pawn and a rook if white plays e3 (or win the rook outright if the king moves). You didn't mention the move during the game or the analysis so it appeared that you didn't see it, which seems very unlikely. Perhaps you valued the bishop more highly in that position but if so I wish you had explained why.
I agree that longer formats are the way. Although there is certainly a place for lower time controls. I feel like more people can understand longer time controls however. This is unfounded however I need more experience to know.
It is interesting to me that Danya's beginner advice ("keep the tension") is the exact opposite of Aman's in his building habits series ("always trade when offered"). Can Danya maybe address why keeping the tension is a better rule than always trade (recognizing all rules have exceptions of course). Why should a beginner keep the tension over simplifying the position?
