    A lot of classics here. I reread To Kill a Mockingbird couple years ago, great book and film. I need to get some Mose Allinson into the collection. His records used to be quite common in charity shops in the UK. I haven't seen your number one film.

      I think that Mose Allison was either the first or second jazz artist that I purchased with Chet Baker being the other possibility. I always liked the humor mixed in with a bit of fatalism. The movie To Kill A Mockingbird with the child's narration has the feel of what I imagine the book to be like. John Ford is a favorite director and I do enjoy the westerns he made with John Wayne.

    Liberty Valance, another song I first heard on one of those oldies comps as a teen. I may have also seen the film long ago now that I think of it. I have one Mose Allison LP on Prestige and the self titled Arthur Alexander album, both from the early 70's. I did watch Lawrence Of Arabia again in the last couple of years. I am starting to have heard of some (but not all) of the TV series though I do not recall ever watching them. I remember long ago on a music message board there was a guy who posted under the name Simon Templar, he must have been a fan of The Saint. Cheers!

      I'm not sure but I think that either Mose Allison or Chet Baker was my first jazz artist that I purchased. I enjoyed the humor that Mose had in his songs. I had a 4 record 60's comp but it did not have any Gene Pitney and I'm not sure whether I saw the movie first or heard the song. I have two Arthur Alexander album and a couple CD's. I noticed that the song is called "Soldiers Of Love" on one and "Soldier Of Love" on the other. I was able to see Lawrence Of Arabia on the big screen ten or fifteen years ago and I remember being amazed with the cinematography. I may have to use Simon Templar sometime. Have a great week.

    Good Evening Randy. I agree that this was a solid year for films. Four of your five appear on my list. I basically have ten films and nothing else for this year. My No 1: Is David Lean’s ‘Lawrence of Arabia’, with Peter O’toole, Alec Guinness and Omar Sharif. A masterpiece and on of my top favourite films of all time. I would also love to see it on the big screen, particularly the camel charge on Aqaba. At No 2: Robert Aldrich’s ‘Whatever Happened to Baby Jane’, with Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. This psychological thriller is in a class of its own. The tension between Joan Crawford and Better Davis coupled to the B & W photography makes this very special. At No 3: Gregory Peck in ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’. A landmark film of its time. At No 4: A solid remake from MGM came with ‘Mutiny On The Bounty’, with Trevor Howard, Marlon Brando and Richard Harris. I enjoyed this version much better than their 1935 version with Clark Gable and Charles Laughton, even though the 1935 version was a landmark film of its time. I still feel that the most accurate portrayal of Captain Bligh is in the 1984 version, ‘The Bounty’, with Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson, which is a very good film. At No 5: John Frankenheimer’s ‘The Manchurian Candidate’, with Frank Sinatra, Lawrence Harvey, Janet Leigh and Angela Lansbury. Agree, its unusual to see Angela Lansbury play a sinister character.Very good political thriller and superior to the remake. At No 6: J. Lee Thompson’s ‘Cape Fear’, with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum. I will say that I also enjoyed Martin Scorsese’s 1991 remake with Robert De Niro and Nick Nolte. I felt that both films were very well done from two very successful film Director’s. Each film has its own merits. At No 7: Sam Peckinpah’s ‘Ride The High Country’, with Joel McCrae and Randolph Scott. Solid western from Sam Peckinpah. I also agree with you that ‘The Wild Bunch’ is much more exciting and is also my favourite of his westerns. At No 8: Terence Young’s ‘Dr. No’, with Sean Connery. The film that started the James Bond franchise that we still enjoy over 60+ years later. At No 9: ‘Night Of The Eagle’, with Peter Wyngarde and Janet Blair. An above average psychological horror that is well worth the watch. Works well in B & W and like ‘Night Of the Demon (1957)’ also has a very well written script. Seen both of these films many, many times. At No 10: Richard Egan and Ralph Richardson in the historical drama ‘300 Spartans’. I have not seen this film now for over thirty years but have fond memories of it and found it way better than the 2006 film ‘300’. Your other film ‘The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence’ is a film I have not seen yet. I will check it out. On the TV Series section, I also enjoyed ‘The Saint’ with Roger Moore. It came back again in the UK in the late 70’s as ‘Return Of the Saint’, with Ian Ogilvy taking over from Roger Moore. That is for me for 1962. Have a great evening.

      You have a great film list. Cape Fear was my last cut and I think Robert Mitchum is very frightening in it. I like the remake as well and you can see what a great director can do with a quality story. I like all three versions you mentioned of the Captain Bligh story. I rewatched the 1935 version recently, so it is the freshest in my mind. I probably need to return to the others. The tension supplied on screen and supposedly off screen probably helped in the movie's suspenseful storyline in "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane." I have not seen the remake of "The Manchurian Candidate" but I think that it would be tough to beat as the performances are all excellent. "Dr. No" also got serious consideration with Ursula Andress introduction being one the most famous Bond scenes. I have not seen "Night of the Eagle" but from your description, it sounds like a movie that would be right up my alley. I think you would enjoy "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" as it is my favorite western and it's great to see John Wayne, James Stewart and Lee Marvin in fine form. I don't think that I remember the "Return Of The Saint" series. Thanks for watching and providing your selections.

    Great stuff Randy, as always! It is funny that rock took a back seat for those first couple of years in the 60s, especially after the big 50s boom.

    • @RandyforRoyals
      @RandyforRoyals  4 дні тому +1

      It kind of did but I thought there was some excellent pop music during that period. Rock was served several blows with Elvis going into the army, the death of Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis married his first cousin. Little Richard forsook secular music and Carl Perkins had an auto accident.

    Awesome video Randy. Great movie year. I agree with you on Mary Badham's narration and overall performance in To Kill a Mockingbird, it's fantastic. I actually have a top ten movie list for 1962. Here goes...
    10. Dr No
    9. Cape Fear
    8. Lonely Are the Brave
    7. The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner
    6. Birdman of Alcatraz
    5. Days of Wine and Roses
    4. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
    3. The Manchurian Candidate
    2. Lawrence of Arabia
    1. To Kill a Mockingbird
    Three favorite TV Series for me are The Beverly Hillbillies, McHale's Navy and Combat (Rick Jason and Vic Morrow).
    Some of my favorite songs would be, Green Onions (Booker T & the MGs), You Belong to Me (The Duprees), Tell Him (The Exciters), Baby It's You (The Shirelles), You Really Got a Hold on Me), (Smokey Robinson & The Miracles) and Lovers Who Wander and Ruby Baby by Dion. Keep this series rolling, it's great.

      I really like your movie list, especially your top four as we had matches. I went back and forth on whether to include Cape Fear but after rewatching Ride The High Country, Sam Peckinpah won out. Robert Mitchum is pretty frightening in that movie. I don't think that I have seen The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner. When I was at my dad's house the other day, he was watching a Beverly Hillbillies episode. I did like that show along with Green Acres and Petticoat Junction. Petticoat Junction is coming up next year with some really good competition. I didn't really watch Combat but I remember the show. Dion had some great early sixties songs and seems to just miss my picks. I probably should have had Baby It's You as I really like that song and I just picked up a vinyl compilation by The Shirelles; I had a CD one. Thanks for watching.

    Hi Randy!!! Another great year and video too..... now i'm startting to recognize and remember some of the music, films and tv shows like Art Pitney's "Only Love....." my parents still love that song. The Saint was a cool tv show, but what a dreadful movie the remake was with the late Val Kilmer..... cheers and be well

      Thanks Cristian. The Beatles show up the next year and things could get more interesting. I have always loved Gene Pitney's voice. I really did enjoy The Saint TV show and had heard bad things about the Val Kilmer movie. I will go with your endorsement and probably never see it. Take care.

      I do enjoy a lot of westerns and I guess that we can't agree on everything. I do remember watching The Saint in reruns in the afternoon when I was younger and I probably didn't get some of the humor at the time. I'm a fan of a lot of film series and The Saint was a pretty good one and George Sanders was a nice choice. Thanks for watching.

    I have two of that Gene Pitney album, one of them the heart is die cut the other is not. There are so many movies and tv shows Ive never seen but want to. need to set away some time to do that. Just the packaging on the Virginian makes me want to watch it.

      I was glad to find the die cut Pitney album. It is hard to find the time to watch what I want to watch and listen to the music I want as well. The Virginian sets are very nice and with the sturdy metal case. I did pick up one season used without the metal outer case. Thanks for watching.

    I have liked all of the Ray Charles and Sam Cooke tunes I have heard. I don't think I have heard anything from the others, but I could be wrong. The Manchurian Candidate is awesome and I even liked the remake. I have seen your runners up, but not your #1 movie pick, unless I have forgotten that I saw it. I think I may have seen some of the Saint.

    • @RandyforRoyals
      @RandyforRoyals  5 днів тому

      Ray Charles and Sam Cooke had such great voices and I was able to see Ray Charles with the Kansas City Symphony which was a treat. You would probably be familiar with other artists covering Arthur Alexander more that his own renditions. I haven't seen the remake of the Manchurian Candidate but will try and give it a watch. You might have to like Westerns to see my favorite pick and John Ford was one of the best with that genre. I remember seeing The Saint in reruns when I was younger and Val Kilmer starred in a movie version in the 90's although I didn't see it.

    My favorite album this year is Don’t Play That Song by Ben E King. I also like Save the Last Dance for Me by The Drifters and The Fabulous Miracles by The Miracles. Favorite song is Stand by Me by Ben E King. I also really like Save the Last Dance for me by The Drifters and Surfin Safari by The Beach Boys. My favorite movie is To Kill a Mockingbird. I also like The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, The Longest Day, and How the West Was Won. I’m not familiar with any of the TV shows though I would like to check out Michale’s Navy.

      I am also a fan of Ben E. King, The Drifters and The Miracles but I don't have any of those albums. Your three songs were under consideration but I went a different way. To Kill A Mockingbird is a very good movie and 1962 was chalk full of great movies. We get an early glimpse of the comedic talents of Tim Conway on McHale's Navy as he was in fine form. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    before I watched the video, here are my favorites-
    Album- Peter, Paul And Mary
    Song- The Locomotion by Little Eva
    Movie- What Ever Happened To Baby Jane
    TV show- The Lucy Show

    • @RandyforRoyals
      @RandyforRoyals  4 дні тому

      Interesting picks. A Peter, Paul & Mary hits collection was the second album I ever bought. "The Locomotion" was on a 60's 4 LP collection that was purchased from a television ad and was somewhat like K-tel, so I know that song well. Bette Davis is pretty terrifying in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?.

    I love Gene Pitney and I agree with you that the early 60’s was a much better era for music than many people think, especially in r&b. “Havin’ A Party” by Sam Cooke is a classic, I remember Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes would often end their shows with that. “Soldier Of Love” by Arthur Alexander is a great pick. There actually is a radio recording of the Beatles doing it on the BBC…. I like all of your movie picks. It’s very hard to narrow them down, but I’m going to pick “Carnival Of Souls”, “Lawrence Of Arabia”, “Lonely Are The Brave”, “Requiem For A Heavyweight”, and “To Kill A Mockingbird”, with honorable mention to “Tales Of Terror”, a trilogy of Edgar Allan Poe stories starring Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Basil Rathbone and others. It’s really not that good, but I have a great memory of seeing at a Saturday horror film matinee in the early seventies and it’s a real guilty pleasure.. Finally, my favorite songs of 1962 are “The End Of The World” by Skeeter Davis, “Beechwood 4-5789” by The Marvelettes, “Baby It’s You” by The Shirelles, “Our Day Will Come” by Ruby & The Romantics, and “Devil Woman” by Marty Robbins. I really admire your TV video collection! Take care..

    • @RandyforRoyals

      There were a lot of great r&b tunes released in the early sixties before the British invasion. I am a big fan of Southside Johnny but never got to see him live. He incorporated a lot of rhythm and blues into his music. I've always liked Gene Pitney's voice and he had a string of great singles. The Beatles did several Arthur Alexander songs with "Anna (Go To Him)" on their debut. I have not seen a couple of your movie picks. I have "Lonely Are The Brave" on DVD but have not watched it yet and I did enjoy watching "Tales Of Terror" as I do enjoy the 50's and 60's horror and sci-fi genres. "Baby It's You " probably should have made my "runners up" as I really do like that tune. Thanks for watching and providing your choices.

    Besides that Duke of Earl LP there was Bob Dylan's debut and The Beach Boys Surfin' Safari.

      I would have liked to include Hatari as that movie is a lot of fun and I was in Tanzania this year and it was filmed there. I also learned that Hatari means danger in Swahili. I thought about including Dylan's album and I thought that Surfin' Safari came out in 1963 but you are correct (1962) and it was overlooked. I was glad to see the westerns The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and Ride The High Country on your list. Bette Davis and Joan Crawford are really good in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane. Thanks for watching and leaving your picks.
