Mel was a family friend. He was always gracious and friendly to me. When I grew up, my wife and I always went to see him perform in NY. He always came and sat with us between sets. Loved him.

I was a freshman in college hearing Torme in 1978. When he got going doing an uptempo number I was astonished - I didn’t think anyone could do what he was doing. Forty five years later, I realize that there are only a handful of singers that can swing like he can. In India there’s a pop singer who can deliver like Torme, Shreya Ghoshal. Even though she never sings in English, I listen to every song she releases, hoping she shifts into that special gear they both have.

Mel was so articulate, effortlessly talking without hemming and hawing, "uh'," or "you know's." Bing was the same way. I miss Mel!

His great "friend" Jerry Lewis was a notorious and arrogant prick, the most hated interviewee of all time. He died with about 55 million in the bank and left NADA, 0, bubkis to his first 5 kids from his former wife of 38 years!

I never knew that much about music when I was younger and definitely didn't know anything about jazz. Just listened to mainstream radio. However, I was always aware of the name Mel Torme. Only now, later in life, I see what a talented and smart and good person he really is. Thanks for the great video.

@@EagleRockers You can say anything you want, I have seen many singers and Torme was one of the most talented. I think that you have to have a sense of self in order to survive in such a hard driving business.
