I once commented on your late nite stream that at 64 I was probably to old to learn music theory, which was the topic that night .And you said “Jason 64 is not to old no way”.So I hung my hat on that ,got the Book and am slowly making progress.
    So thank you Rick.

    To sum up :
    1. Believe in one's objective value of yourself. ( Mother)
    2. Never rely on formal education only.
    3. Have a plenty great ideas, but finish each idea. Success means you finish the product.
    4. Courage. Believe in what you good at and make it. Everyone at least has one thing that he/she good at. If music is what you good at, don't be discouraged.
    5. Be honest to yourself. If you good or stink at anything, just be honest.
    6. Your taste is unique. It doesn't mean bad.
    7. Accept criticism and feedback. Reflect in the past, but living in the present, and plan for the future.
    8. Be persistent. Be obsessed.
Rick is honest. He's someone you want to be his friend. This pep talk video is no BS. ❤️

Rick, your story is mine. Took me 34 years before I took the first step towards success. The gamechanger for me was when my mom told me I could accomplish anything I put my mind to. Before that I wallowed in every inferiority complex. At 50 I started music, and heading into composing. That which we avoid because of fear can potentially become our crowning achievements.

I seriously remember when this concept of "why not me" ? hit me hard... it hit me at some point early in my career as a professional drummer... I thought "Someone is writing the music for these video games my daughter and I play together... Why can't this "someone be me"? It's a powerful concept ... very powerful... Too many people give up before they even try because they think they are not "that Guy" or "That Girl" ...

After years of hard work, and hundreds of thousands of dollars spent, I can assure you that there are two things you cannot control in your destiny: fan support, and luck. Support means you can make a profit, and luck means you'll get the support. Luck is the most important aspect of this. Sure, you need to be ready, but if you are not lucky...

Thanks Rick, your School Experience is EXACTLY like mine. I was absolutely HORRIBLE from K-12. So I Hated, not just disliked....HATED everything about it. School was PRISON from K-12. After High School at age-17, I Toured with Up With People (on Drums) to 100 cities in the USA, Spain, Canada, Mexico, Portugal etc. Since my High School Grade Point was a C-minus, I could NOT get into a 4-year University. So after that UWP Tour, I went to a 2-year Community College on Academic Probation at age 18 and got STRAIGHT A's in EVERY Class, made the Deans-List. Then finally graduated from college with a BA in Music 8-years late. My point is when I was Really Ready, School was Great, Fun, and no longer a Problem. Then I Thanks for your excellent discussion about Success. So VERY Important.

I’m 46 now and feel like I’m just getting started. Lack of confidence has always been my hurdle, and constant “imposter syndrome” in anything I’ve done. I teach guitar and play gigs but constantly feel under qualified, which is really a result of what you spoke about at the beginning about positive reinforcement for kids. I never had that so I’ve had to build it myself. I even started a UA-cam channel and one of my videos has exceeded 40k views but I’ve been hindered doing much more by that old mindset.
I saw your video today and it’s been really inspiring and very timely. Thankyou so much for bearing your soul, telling your story and being real, it helps so many of us, you are a fantastic teacher.

I wanted to say that I was a horrible student all the way through high school myself. In fact, I had to take some correspondence courses in order to be able to graduate from high school. I received many grades of F on my report cards. However, it had nothing to do with a lack of intelligence. I simply did not fit into the system, and also came from a broken household where nobody took an interest in me. I went on to college where I got mostly As. None of the teachers would have believed it.

Over the past few years I've donr everything I can to better myself and dedicated myself to playing guitar, learning theory and would like to do UA-cam and record. I did do these things in high school but was always an awful student and never had any positive reinforcement but looking at people like you, Rhett, Rob Chapman etc have really motivated me and showed me that if you work hard and try to get better you can be successful.

I can relate to this & its so similar re: school experience. I would argue that we didn't have a learning issue and that the problem is the US school system of teaching. 1 size doesn't fit all & they do not lean towards helping or encouraging those in the Arts world. My mother was a teacher & told me the exact same things your mom told you & you're right, it stays with us forever. One of your fav musos Sting, who taught early on, once said something that I never forgot & used when I taught for a while, he said "We really can't teach anyone anything, we can just create an environment where they are eager to learn." I think that sums up your page & you Rick, you're not forcing or pushing anything on anyone you're just doing what you love & are great at & the joy shines through. Thats something everyone wants to be a part of & is eager to "learn" how they can participate. Forget 1m Subs, you're going much higher!

Secretive, guarded people tend to be less creative as a general rule. Creative, productive people have no problem in sharing their ideas because they have new ideas coming along all the time. I have known a few people who protect and guard their ideas with their life because they don't have many ideas to begin with. Most really creative people are happy to share their knowledge. This is why I love the videos by Rick Beato, Warren Huart etc. They've got so much going on, they don't feel the need to keep anything from the likes of us.

You're very fortunate to have had the support of your mom, she was your saving grace. Parents are so important, I personally lost mine and was placed with my 20 year older than me brother and his vengeful wife where they did everything in their (her) power to undermine any positive aspect of my being before casting me out into the world at 16. Needless to say, I've struggled my entire life. Like so many kids I started to play the guitar at 13, at 17 I started performing solo and was a immediate hit which freaked me out when I walked into a performance expecting a handful of people only to discover it was standing room only. I froze essentially and stopped persueing performing as I had no support system for which to turn. I played for myself a little off and on after that until I found an electric guitar in a second hand store at 51, it was the first time I had ever had one. 3 years later I picked it up and started to play and have been seriously playing and writing again since. It is nice of you to have shared your story and to share your knowledge. Thanks

Mr.Beato i had on and off years. It was like for some reason i couldnt do good on the even years i felt cursed. In my second year for College, Berklee Online, I became undone with it all. Back when i was in HS my final year dragged out into 2 years. For a year i stayed away from playing electric guitar and played accoustic guitar instead. Was very theraputic and helped me back into playing electric guitar. After everything id say that these vids are singlehandedly a panacea for when ur feeling down on ur luck as a musician/instrumentalist. I am so greatfull for finding this channel. Have a great weekend!

I love videos like this! I follow a lot of youtube channels of varying topics, and these are my favorite type of videos. I didn't have a ton of support as a kid, and still don't really, but these are always a good reminder that I can actually do what I want to do as long as I'm willing to put in the work required. I think videos like this will end up helping a lot of people.

You're right, Rick! Just starting is the most difficult part. It's starting/breaking a habit. You're starting the habit of sitting down and starting that thing and breaking the habit of not starting. It can be difficult at times but if you do it often enough it BECOMES engrained in your subconscious thus becoming a habit. Thank you for the video!

Thank you so much, Rick, for all that you do! I'm not a musician (I wish) but music is what I love more than anything. And you have taught me, a layperson, so much about it. It's information that enriches, tenfold, my experience of just listening to music, my favorite thing to do. You're the best!

"Anyone can be successful." - Rick Beato.
I would take this one step further and say "EVERYONE can be successful." Life isn't a competition with everyone else, where there are only a few winners and therefore lots and lots of "losers".
I'm not saying, everyone gets a trophy or a "star" sticker like you got in nursery school, just for showing up. Really it's about this: Doing your best. Truly pushing yourself to improve can be the hardest thing you ever do, no matter what your goal may be! Man, if you are REALLY doing your BEST?... then take a look in the mirror... that is what success looks like - be proud of it! Peace.
This is for my son, Nick Bonin, who's music career is 100% about his hard work and dedication - he never gave up!

I don't come to your channel, or any other of the music channels I follow, for amazing looking video production. I come for the straight honest scoop. It is an AMAZING time we are living in! But the key for me is honesty. I had a few music teachers along the way (in my 50s) who did make things seem like "secrets" - nope. It takes commitment and work, but we all can learn and grow. Love your videos.

I've loved your music- based videos for as long as I've been a subscriber, but in my opinion this video is the best you've made. The positive angle on what it takes to be successful is spot on. It takes determination, grit, patience and hard work. People need to know that it truly is within everyone's reach if they double down and work for it. Perhaps it's better said... "Watch what I do, not what I say"... because you do it time and time again. Thanks.

Love the opening silence with that “look”. Hey I sing in a band at 52 years old. Been singing publicly for only about 10 yrs the last 2 or 3 in local bar bands. It’s been a hidden talent that has lately rewarded me in a deep personal way. I still have the mindset of I didn’t hit my peak yet. Yes at almost 53 yrs old. !!.

Rick, love your story, I had the same learning issues and it was also my Mum who told me that the problem was with the teachers, not me. Well, I’m the same age as you, I’ve been very successful in my life, despite not going to college after high school, I ended up doing it part time years later and even got an MBA. I’ve traveled the World, had some very high paying jobs in marketing, operations and aviation...my Mum always said, you can do anything, make them tell you no. If you want to do it, if you believe you can, you will, if you believe you can’t, you won’t. Never stop learning, and learn from your mistakes. No, thanks to you and Marty, I’m learning guitar at 57 and enjoying it immensely. Thanks for all you do.

Rick, its 12 Jan 2022, and I am recovering from my bout with covid and ran across this video. So glad that I watched. You & I are about the same age and much of early your life track you described mirrors my own. I have only been a student of guitar for ten years, but it has opened up a whole new world for me, -an escape really, that I otherwise would not experience in my heavily industrial sales life. Simply stated, the experiences you learned from, the upbringing of your parents, your persistence, and will to do whatever is necessary to achieve a positive outcome inevitably results in success. This is a lesson for achievement for whatever field of endeavor one engages in. I truly enjoy your videos. Best regards, Jeff

    Rick,
I love your channel because there is intellectual content in your videos. Plus, I remember being left handed and poor growing up I had misconceptions and a lack of funds. Plus because of a cost of playing an instrument, my parents, mainly my dad, didn't encourage it. So, I started singing. Now, I didn't learn how to play anything on the guitar until I was 30.

I'm sitting here listing to you again and I recognize myself in you again. I had a mom that pushed me forward. I was never good in school grade school and high school. I was always good in art and music. I could sit down and just play any instrument. I played every band instrument in high school and really just switch from one to another. Art is second nature. But I really relate with you. You do more then just talk about music your are dynamic and can get the information across the idea the feel. I wish I were close to Atlanta I would love to take some privet lessons with you . Listing to you talk about ideas in what makes this song great I have learned so much about things I wasn't hearing in the music that you are hearing. Keep doing the great videos.
