I'm italian, I'm a composer, I higly respect other musicians no matter what music style they are. With all due respect to Mr. Hancock, in 1987 Maestro Morricone has created a masterpice that will live forever. Everybody knows and remeber that magical, simple, graceful, powerful and ecstatic music from the movie and even people that never had the chance to listen to that before are mesmerized, touched and blessed from being exposed to that music for the first time. The music from Morricone will live forever. The main theme for the Mission is a true cultural heritage of humanity.
Music is the best we have. Music is the best we are.

You completely underestimate how legendary of an album Herbie made. Don’t let your love of Morricone blind you to different tastes. I highly doubt ANY music will l live in forever, but both Morricone and Hancock’s music will live on for a long time.

For some, it was "Rebel Without A Cause" (1956?) Or "Diner" (1983) or "Grand Canyon" (1992) but for me as a twenty something young adult in 1986 it was "Round Midnight"
It defined my origins, and the type of human being I wanted to be, and how I wanted to live my life...not a musician, but as a patron of the art form.
Sadly, it also defined the last hurrah for many of these masters during that "Renaissance" of the mid 1980's.
With their passing, they took with them the dedication, guidance, craftsmanship, and passion. Not just the deceased musicians, but those knowledgeable veteran radio announcers too, who were artists in their own right. So, at the very least, I did get to see one of the era's best films win something.

Of course, you realise my question was facetious.
As much as I love Ennio Morricone and his work...the only way you could hear the music for The Mission after seeing it at the cinema was to buy the release and play it at home or on your Walkman cassette.
On the other hand, the TWO releases for the motion picture Round Midnight, (OST on Columbia, and "The Other Side Of Round Midnight" on Blue Note) which were released before the film's debut, received considerable airplay on jazz stations worldwide, especially after the debut.
So you and me are in total simpatico, seeing this award going to the clear winner, and Jazz music and it's masters finally receiving an assemblage of respect.

I wonder about if Bette Midler’s “Aliens” joke at first in this video was just for a pure entertainment.
James Horner said he thought the original score of The Mission was just wonderful and he even voted for it instead of his Aliens. ua-cam.com/video/gHIsCsXTBFM/v-deo.html (46:07-)
This article explains Ennio’s feeling at the 1987 Oscar. It’s from his interview after he won Oscar for “Hateful 8” in 2015.
    - Speaking through an interpreter, the maestro, now a lively if craggy 87, isn’t exactly laughing when he says this. You get the impression that he still cares quite a bit. I have read that he was particularly annoyed when his score for The Mission lost to Herbie Hancock’s for Round Midnight, in 1986.
Dark clouds gather around him. “This is true,” he rumbles. “The audience in the theatre shouted when it was announced. They were also disappointed. Herbie Hancock had only 50 per cent original music for the film. The rest was made up of songs arranged by Herbie. It was not fair. Herbie is a great pianist and arranger, but the music was not 100 per cent original. I left the room immediately. I was very cross. The audience kept on shouting.”
    www.irishtimes.com/…/ennio-morricone-sergio-leone-a…
Herbie Hancock later played keyboard for Quincy Jones’ version of “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” theme on an Ennio Morricone tribute album in 2007, “We All Love Ennio Morricone.” (ua-cam.com/video/Zm9XrQc2tzw/v-deo.html)
These two masters seem they really respected each other.
    That's cool.

Herbie Hancock is great. But his work on Round Midnight didn't deserve for Best Original Score, not because it wasn't good, but because the song was excist before since 1944 and so it was NOT ORIGINAL. It was adaptation. For ORIGINAL SCORE, of course Morricone deserved more to win.

Monk and Cooties' Round Midnight wasn't the "Flagship" from the OST, "Chan's Song" was.
And that is an original composition written for the film.
Hancock wisely re-read period piece music throughout the film, in form of standards and ballads etc.
If you examine Hancock's discography you will see he had more than enough of material to use if he wanted to.
The screenplay was France in the late 1950's,
specifically Paris, and a day trip to Lyon, I think.
Without the inclusion of popular jazz standards written by other composers, and famous song writers, the film would not have made sense. That's what Jazz musicians play.

I tried listening "Round Midnight" score: nice but that's it. You might say is because i am not a Jazz music lover, fair enough but i am not even a classic orchestra music lover. Maybe I am wrong? I went then to look for how may views have those 2 soundtracks: Round Midnight ones stays at few tenths of k, while The Mission are in average at hundreds of k, few some at M or 20M: improbable then that 20M people are wrong...

The JERRY GOLDSMITH MASTERPIECE, "PAPILLION," should have received the best score oscar.THIS WAS ONE OF JERRY'S GREATEST SCORES. Released by Allied Artists (1973 -1980); Lorimar Telepictures (1980 - 1989)

And even Sidney Lumet's adaptation of Baum/Brown's "The Wiz" was one of a kind picture for

him an 1979 Oscar nomination for his wonderful efforts.
