"A model railway is constantly evolving." The most true statement ever about this hobby. My best buds for the last year have been rewiring their layout and redoing the scenery at the front of it. Next stage is to rip out the steep grade on it that's been a headache of ours for years and have fully level mainlines.
It reminds me of a quote from Walt Disney regarding Disneyland: “Disneyland will never be completed as long as there is imagination left in the world.”
Do you guys make the engine shed from the titfield thunderbolt? I’m making my first proper layout and want to have a small shelter thing for some rolling stock
So glad we got another Tug's Trains so soon! This was a great video and I just adore the scenery on Narrow Guage Mountain. I can't wait to see more scenery!!
I'd be tempted to do something with the backs of the cutoff boards, maybe adding a mine on the back of the narrow gauge mountain one and some kind of mill or a works inside the loop on the city end, maybe with a river running from the water heater powering a mill and a small works shed off the hidden siding if I wanted to get really ambitious
A good and easy tip to make those stone arches look even better is a simple technique called dry brushing All it requires is having only a small amount of paint on a MOSTLY but not fully dry brush, wiping off excess paint and then just lightly stroking the brush on to the bricks, the paint gets to be on only the most raised surfaces and it results in a SUPER natural rock and stone look and it’s super easy to learn to do Been loving this series so far keep up the good work
I'm so glad you decided to make a full circuit loop. The end to end design is cool very realistic but, it's much more satisfying watching the trains go around in a loop. Just nostalgic
14:53 “Is it recording? Ok I better be polite (sits down) Hi Dad’s audience!!!” I think you should do either the s13 retrospective, or a Pixar talk since you haven’t done one yet. Great video as always. Love Mosby too 😊
This has to be my new favorite series you started Tug. It's always fascinating seeing what changes and addons you apply. My favorite is still the harbour yard. I cannot wait for part 6
Great decision on adding a loop line! Now it's sort of like your original idea and yet you still keep most of your new layout as well! You can use the loop line as a fiddler's yard if you wanted to.
A cool tip for the plaster cloth. When you lay it place, take the dust from the bag it came in and mix it with some water. Then take your finger and mix it over the placed cloth. This will make the plaster cloth smooth.
Ooo! Ooo! You should totally do another hill in the middle of the new loop you made, maybe have the track tunnel through it a bit, do it's hidden even more, plus then you'll have another hill for either the castle ruins or the church!
I really love how you added Daisy to your railway. You know I actually wouldn’t be surprised if she gets the MVP award for the Season 20 retrospective, nor would I be surprised that the next Sodor’s finest will be on her. Anyway really love your model layout. This is what Thomas should be about, not just being a dumb kids show where anything can happen, and (14:53) 😮 OH MY GOD! 😃 YOU HAVE A DOG?!
6:17 You should seriously consider the “siding” as a staging track for a goods train to run from the hidden track to the harbor and/or anywhere else and back for some switching as part of your operating scheme.

One useful bit of info I learned is that nails for the track can for the most part be found at any hardware store. Saves paying the extra dollar from model train companies
Seeing the progress on your layout/Railway has been so satisfying to watch. I'm already looking forward to the next part. I definitely think we should get the season 13 retrospective at the end of the year. And then maybe a new sodor's finest in the new year. Overall keep up the good work Nic!
20:30 I recognise that model, it was added to Copenhagen Fields (the poster-boy 2mm finescale layout) recently. The layout is of the Kings Cross entrance behind where the movie house was filmed.

Finally finished the video. Honestly tug, you’ve outdone yourself. The Thing you have right there is my dream layout. The only thing I think you should expand more upon is the narrow gauge layout. You do have that other side of the table to expand.
It’s amazing how each new video in this series inspires me with my own custom projects so much. It’s amazing how some grass and buildings adds so much life
The layout is getting so good now, oml, I wanna stroke the shit out of that grass. Also I think the S13 retrospective would be the better choice. Just get out of the way and its one less Miller season to worry about.
The tank next to the cottage would be an oil tank. In homes out in the sticks they wouldn't have every utility mains connected so oil tanks would be used to be a fuel source for heating.
19:52 just a suggestion, it would be nice to have like a picnic area beside the narrow gauge hill, since its next to the trains and the sea shore by the harbor, plus you can add some fences beside the tracks
To me, Season 13 seems fitting for the start of the next year. New year, new era right (someone's said that before right)? I would love a Sodor's Finest to end the year off with a bang as those are so special to me personally, seeing all of the different people that work on them with you helps make them feel so grand.
6:00 suggestion for the big station backdrop! Put a city street on the other side of the wall above the tracks (in the same style above the tunnels on Church Hill Road, just a city scene), building faces against the backdrop (in the same way as your tunnel portals), then the backdrop of a greater skyline.
Holy moly, this layout is really starting to come together! The scenery is looking amazing, especially where you put the rocks, bushes and grass, and I love how much life is being added to it already!
These layouts videos always give me hype and hope. It also inspires me, someday I might want to try and build my own model railway. Watching these make me think - "There is hope," for something of my own I do. And the Tug Pick of Week today, I might also check those out and see how it is. God damn it Tug, your layout videos are too inspiring on my 13 year old mind. Thank You for these videos. I'm excited for more layout videos in the future. And Happy Thanksgiving! Love the scenery added to the railway. I recently started collecting Bachmann’s HO Scale Thomas Range, I can’t set up a model railway yet, but I really want to set one up someday.
There’s something so therapeutic about watching these videos, keep em coming, love seeing the evolution! If I were to suggest anything, maybe move the church hill to behind the station above that loop. I know you said you were going to make a static display of a metropolitan area and keeping the loop open but I think there might be away to incorporate both. Then you could have a way to start your trains without breaking the illusion of your world and have your church on the hill. Considering the space in only 3x3 you could totally have a tunnel system with the hill working like a lid or something for easy access. Then that little siding you have won’t be “point-less” and can be used for actually starting trains. Regardless of what you do can’t wait to see the next installment. Absolutely love these videos, keep up the great work!
Love how this is turning out! very inspiring, I adore the difference in height at the narrow gauge end, with the two standard gauge lines just below. Will definitely make for some fun scenes! A lil tip for ya, when ballasting, if you brush or tap the ballast to fall between the sleepers it tends to look more realistic. Ballast is rarely left on top of the sleepers as it's usually tamped or shovelled down to be more effective ^^ Keep goin! looking forward to seeing the next instalment
The layout is really starting to look like a real railway now that the scenery has been applied. Certainly been picking up some modelling tips from this.
Pro tip, Well idk if its pro or not, i dont even have a layout right now. But on the ones ive made, instead of Styrofoam as a base board, i really like the foam insulation board. They sell it in varrying thicknesses, on the o gauge stuff ive built i usually use a 1" thick sheet. Its nice because it comes in 4x8 sheets, and i like it over Styrofoam because you can actually carve into it, and it doesnt make a huge mess/stick to you/leave little bits everywhere. My last layout was a very simple 4x8, and i was able to just carve down into the foam and make a nice little pond, as well as add some terrain, so it wasnt just dead flat. As the world seldom is. Just a suggestion! Happy modling!
@@SodorEnginesFanatic next i think for christmas atleast seasonn13, hopefully 14 cuz in christmas 2022 he covered 14 and 15 (his old videos of that he and some others reacted to and sorta revied the season but not much)
Yeah, tug is probably one of the best youtubers at the moment, he doesn’t feel the need to over exaggerate his videos and is instead just… a guy, a guy who’s just passionate about what he does and loves to share that passion with others. Not saying there AREN’T other youtubers like that, tug just brings a vibe that other people don’t, he doesn’t feel like “just another youtuber”, he’s more like a dad showing you things that he did while you were away at school.
Love this episode - I think the year should end off with a massive bang, so I'd personally recommend Gordon's Sodor's Finest, but at the end of the day, it's your choice Tug :)
Always a pleasure to see a new Tugs Trains episode out. This was indeed a big step forward. I'm glad you decided to bite the bullet and make it a continuous loop; operations are great and you still have that option, but nothing beats being able to kick back with a cup of tea (or a beer) and just watch the trains go round. That said, I must admit I was horrified at the speeds you were taking your Coronation around those tight loop curves at. I'd strongly recommend adding some skirting guards to the edge of that loop beyond the big station so that if anything does go wrong your precious models don't immediately have a plunge to the concrete below. That said, the fake siding in the tunnel is actually a nice touch and gives a chance for a small hidden fiddle yard for staging and storing trains out of sight; maybe add a curved switch to allow for two short sidings in there. Special props for your quick explanation of how static grass works! I've been curious about it for awhile, but wrote it off as being way beyond my currently non-existent skill level. But after this overview it seems a lot more doable than I'd previously thought. Thanks for the confidence boost. P.S. 24:10 It's a blink and you'll miss it thing, but that whistle sound was a sudden flash of Trainz nostalgia for me. I remember the days when practically every GWR model on the DLS used that same canned whistle sound. Happy days... P.P.S. You mentioned putting on a podcast while you work on the layout. Care to share what sort of podcasts you've been enjoying? Thomas-related stuff? More realistic railway casts like Signals to Danger or The Roundhouse? Or stuff not related to trains at all?
Tug your layout videos have been an inspiration for me to build my own layout. I'm an American who loves both British and American trains. I'm brain storming a layout that I can run both kinds of trains I like and they both look at home.
a tip that can be used for the plaster in the future is that you can dip your fingers in water and then rub the surface to smooth it out and get rid of any hole or traces of the cloth. it is very effective and helps afterwards when painting. Cant wait for when this layout comes closer to the small details!
Brilliant work as always! Wow, so loving the scenery; it looks so real, like real rocky hills in Britain! Also amazed to see the LMS Queen Mary running on your tracks now! That extra loop is good; I'm amazed you kept plenty of space to the water boiler of your house. Keep up the good work as always, Nic! 👍
I was watching this video again and i just saw the little ramp the the water in the harbor and thought of the episode horrid lorries and thought that would be the perfect spot.
Great video on the layout as always! Happy to see you're making progress on it. I do have some suggestions for you after watching this latest video. First, since both of your loops have track that travels very close to the edges of the board, you may want to look into getting some clear acrylic and using it to make a "fence" along the edges of the layout behind the cutoff boards. That way, if a train ever happens to derail on the either of the loops, the fence will be there to prevent it crashing onto the floor. The second idea I had was that you could use the siding behind the station cutoff board as a place to do some shunting, and if you wanted to, you could scenic the area behind the station cutoff board to create an industrial area with a large industry that your railroad siding could serve - maybe a gasworks or something? That way you could include some additional freight operations on your layout. In a similar vein, you could scenic the area behind the narrow gauge hill cutoff board to create a small seaside village similar to the ones seen on Duck's branch line. It would obviously mean more things to do, but it would also be an easy way of using the space you already have to create additional scenes that you could use in your future filming endeavors. The acrylic fences could also be made easily removable for filming in these areas by drilling screws into the fascia to hold it and then cutting slots in the acrylic to fit over the screws, allowing you to slide the fences on and off whenever you feel the need to.
Good Tip: You can use spare model track rails to be used as check rails on tighter turns. I've used this trick on my layout with tight turns, and it works very well.
Honestly, most of my life is miserable but any upload of yours helps that issue so much, thanks for making such wonderful content all year round, Nic. happy belated mountain adventure day :3
WOAH Unlucky … the layout gets better and better Tho I gotta admit … put Percy in the naughty corner he did something bad … send him to the back of the shed as a generator Stanley style .😂😂 But really I LOVE this . Keep it up
3d printing really opens up a lot of options for various hobbies, like your train scenery or my miniature wargaming, and also things like cosplay. Truly a revolutionary technology. Love how the layout looks so far!
If you want a ruined castle, it's quite easy to scratch build. Start off with a cardboard tube - this is your turret. Cut the top so it looks like the top has collapsed. Get some bits of cardboard to represent walls - chipboard is good stuff for this. Again, cut them to shape as if parts of them have collapsed/people have nicked the stones for their own buildings. Stick the walls and turret together in roughly the shape you want your castle to be. My first one was just a kind of L-shape with a turret at the corner. Depending how tall the castle is, you might want to cut holes to represent windows and doors. Then you need pulp board, the rough kind like you get on the inside of cardboard egg cartons. Cut a load of stones from this, roughly to scale. This will take ages. Then stick them to the surfaces of the turret and the walls with PVA, with the rough side facing out. This will also take ages, but of course it doesn't have to be super-neat. The rough texture is great for representing stone. Then paint them and bed them in with grass and bushes. My results can be seen here: ua-cam.com/video/khOzWf9rcls/v-deo.html

I just watched the entire series of you building the model and wondering when the next part would come and it's here! Really excited to watch it Edit: Just finished the video. What an amazing update! The scenery is definitely my favourite. Also, I love the static grass. It's so cool!
Love your layout so far. I think the church on church hill looks good 👍🏻. I love your engine you bought from York. I think season 13 retrospective will do great for the beginning of the new year.
I agree, it is very satisfying to see your layout go back to having a full circuit. I love all of these new additions of the hidden loop line with the false siding, Church Hill, the road bridge and the scenery to Narrow Gauge Mountain. I'm really excited for the next part! I also like some of these changes came from expanding your minimal LMS fleet of engines in your collection. Good music in this video too.
Excellent progress on your layout. I think adding that second loop will prove to be an excellent choice. Mixing the radiuses was wise - I had a similar issue on my own layout where I couldn't make a full 22r turn but 18r was too tight for many of my larger locomotives. Adding two pieces of 22r was enough to fix it. Looking forward to future parts to this 🙂
I'm not on UA-cam every day, so I don't always see community posts, plus Timezones being in Australia. But every time I see a Layout video or a Timeline video, it puts a smile on my face
It's coming along great! I think my favorite part about this is the new loop. I LOVE how you did the idea with the tunnel and adding a dummy track to feel the gap, I think that was really clever! I can't wait to see that part finished!
I'm glad you added that second loop. Nothing against Point to Point Layouts, but having a loop to give locos a good run is always my top recommendation.

I think we should end this year off, with a thomas and friends retrospective on season 13, and the first CGI special, Hero Of The Rails.
Aka Spencer being an Bully what would Sir Nigel Gresley think
@TheBandit025Nova or, in my case, for the title of the movie, thomas and Friends: Spencer's grave mistake.
I would love to see the Season 13 retrospective, because then we can end the year on an interesting note.
Yes good idea. And then next year can start with another Sodor’s Finest
17:25 you should cover the track and add a door to make it easier to access maybe just a thought 😅
This has become my absolute favourite model railway building series of all time!
These videos always make my day, I love the barber shop which I might purchase. Great layout Tug!
6:21 genius work with the fake point here, really good work.
Honestly, most of my life is miserable but any upload of yours helps that issue so much, thanks for making such wonderful content all year round, Nic. happy belated mountain adventure day :3
Your layout is looking more lifeful than ever before
I love how you continuously build up your world, also Mosby was definitely a big help 😁🐕👷♂️🔧
WOAH
Unlucky … the layout gets better and better
Tho I gotta admit … put Percy in the naughty corner he did something bad … send him to the back of the shed as a generator Stanley style .😂😂
But really I LOVE this
. Keep it up
3d printing really opens up a lot of options for various hobbies, like your train scenery or my miniature wargaming, and also things like cosplay.

14:59 aw so cute 🥰
The barrel for the outside of the cottage is for oil (kerosene) for heating/ running an oven such as a Rayburn or AGA
I find the layout interesting, so it's nice to see more videos on it, can't wait to see more

Always enjoyable when Tug further documents his model railway development
That little siding on the loop to disguise it is absolutely brilliant. Narrow Gauge Mountain turned out fantastic too.
I just watched the entire series of you building the model and wondering when the next part would come and it's here! Really excited to watch it
Edit: Just finished the video. What an amazing update! The scenery is definitely my favourite. Also, I love the static grass. It's so cool!
Wow I love the greenery.
The tank you refer to at 21:12 for the house could be a gas tank - lots of rural houses in the UK have LPG tanks as gas mains cannot reach them.
I got here as fast as I could Tug you are incredible never change
Excellent progress on your layout. I think adding that second loop will prove to be an excellent choice. Mixing the radiuses was wise - I had a similar issue on my own layout where I couldn't make a full 22r turn but 18r was too tight for many of my larger locomotives. Adding two pieces of 22r was enough to fix it. Looking forward to future parts to this 🙂
Yooooo he dropped a banger!!
ON A FRIDAY MORNING WHATTT??🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥🔥
Mod-roc! Not heard about that stuff since I was at school and didn’t even know they still made it. Thanks for the unexpected trip down memory lane!
I'm not on UA-cam every day, so I don't always see community posts, plus Timezones being in Australia. But every time I see a Layout video or a Timeline video, it puts a smile on my face
23:10 that barber shop is incredibly good, really, really impressive!
Your model railways are so impressive! I even love the engines that you choose for every layout you build!
The static Grass next to the slate on Narrow Gauge Mountain looks so good! Also love the usage of materials in this!
Its an oil tank that come with the building. A lot rural properties in the UK have oil heating.
7:46 Did you ever think of other names for Church Hill, such as Knock Machan (since St. Machan is the patron saint of Sodor)?
This video feels like the most chaotic and funny Tugs Trains yet, and I love it! Good work Tug!
I love your layout and Railway series videos. I don't know why but they are oddly comfy and good to relax to. I also love your layout and it does inspire me to do something like it with my own Ho/oo models.
6:30 It’s not Pointless, it has a point right outside the tunnel portals!
This is my favorite series you’ve ever done.
I was watching your videos a little while before your original channel got taken down. I think I was just out of highschool going into college. Everytime I saw your notifications I saved it to watch later as fast as I could. I saw the notification for this video come up and for some reason it just made me think about when you first started and how now I’m a college graduate living in my own apartment with my girlfriend and I have a pretty good job that I wouldn’t give up for anything. Basically to make a long story short thank you for keeping me entertained throughout a busy time In my life and allowing me to take breaks and enjoy myself. ✌️
Love the barbershop interior!!
