this man changed my life. there's no other way to say it. i discovered him maybe 5 years ago. I'm so glad i did. As a child of physical disability seeing ian up there absolutely OWN the stage is truly iconic. I have a copy of Hallo Sausages. The complete lyrics of Ian Dury book put together by Jemima. It's one of my prized possessions.
My Dad got me into Ian Dury when I was just Three years old, and I still ain't bored yet. I was about Five years old, there about, when "Hit me with your rhythm stick" Hit No.1 in the UK charts. I love his work and I had not heard anything like that before as a kid! Whaaaaa! I'm so glad he still has such a positive influence on people to this day. It's very heart-warming to know how much he achieved, what adversity he must have had to overcome and how his raw, unique talents are still touching and inspiring people who have had the same kind of experience. Good luck to you sir, Mr. Dury forever!!!!
I only discovered him a few year’s ago too. I’m classed as disabled,I have autism, and I think this guy is not only a legend but a pure genius too. I even love his song ‘Spasticus Autisticus.” People will quickly assume it’s a bad song but if you listen to why he wrote it and what inspired him to write it then that’ll change your mind.
@@Cruzy1892 Have you seen the film "Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll"? Andy Serkis plays Ian Dury, and he looks, sounds and acts exactly like him! Even managed to somehow build his one side bigger than the other, so he looks like he also suffered from polio just like Mr. Dury did. You'll love it if you haven't yet watched. "I'm Spartacus!" 😝😝
I woke up this morning, after an extra-crap sleep, and "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" was racing through my head, non-stop, and spent about an hour wondering about Ian's life. Glad to see this. The man was very, very clever.
Thank you for posting this. Ian Dury was a wonderful presence in our lives.Genius. I saw him at North London Poly in 1979 and many times after. The Blockheads were fantastic musicians. I have the tee-shirt from that gig still tho it can hardly be read now as it's faded, like me haha. Brilliant songs. Love him.
I lived on Kilburn High road years after the Highroaders, but remember the fantastic bassist Norman used to drink in my local, the Cole Pitz…….said hello and had a chat a few times
In 1979 when I was 8, a rhythm hit me and I bought my first Vinyl Record ever, Ian Dury and the Blockheads Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick. That was the start of my love of collecting records, by the age the age of 13 I became an apprentice D.J. to D.J. Cosmic Jam. And by 18 my piers gave my nick name Younghead.
The white haired bloke with Ian is Derek “The Draw” Hussey who took over lead vocals in the band after Ian died. Had the unrepeatable pleasure of performing with him and the rest of the original Blockheads at my 50th birthday party in Norfolk a few years ago, and will remain a standout moment in my life. Derek also died earlier this year and I think the Band will now stop performing, as they are all around 70 now and a number of them are no longer in the best of health. Unique musical legends 👍🙏❤️
But here in Australia they let Ian play Spasticus, on the only music show in the country at the time called Countdown, on a Sunday evening at 6 o'clock. Never forget his gig with the blockheads in the 70s here in little old Adelaide, it was one of the best things we'd seen
That was wonderful. Thanks very much for posting. Ian was a salt of the earth kind of bloke...and a massive talent. Never forgotten. Rest In Piece sir.
Not just brilliant but also extremely likeable. Good old Ian. I remember when Rhythm Stick came out, it was a stone cold instant classic. Never heard anything like it, played it over and over. RIP a true original.
my grandad showed me Ian about a year ago, and it took months to get it stuck in my head, i told my grandad it got stuck in my head and we have now became best mates.
He had brains at 11. I couldn't even pass those Eleven Plus exams now as an adult, never mind 11. He did very well for himself in every area. Thanks for uploading.
Thanks for sharing! I learned so much about Ian, including that his last name is Dury, not Drury! What a great guy! I wish he was still around - I would love to have heard him sing!
John Cooper Clarke is definitely one of the greats, up thee with Ian Dury. Not a lyricist, more of a poet, I suppose, but he did release a few albums. Even youngsters like the Arctic Monkeys have written some great songs in that working class English style. Worth checking out.
I reckon Jacques Brel and Cole Porter may just beat him. But Dury was brilliant. I put him up in the rarified echelons with Jake Thackray, Momus and Morrissey.

A "charmed" life - lived it to the full. An artist, a shaker and definitely a charmer. RIP.
I lived on Kilburn High road years after the Highroaders, but remember the fantastic bassist Norman used to drink in my local, the Cole Pitz…….said hello and had a chat a few times
I don't think he knew how wonderful he was. That is what he brought to all of us, his ordinariness and his extraordinariness.
What a legend....R.I.P, poetry..

God that is lovely. They mean so much, don't they? I was a little kid and just became so obsessed.
Used to listen to Ian and the boys in my dad’s car as a kid. He’s been gone 10 years now. All the best mate…from your son ❤️

There aint 'alf been some lovelly bastards!' (we were lucky bleeders, lucky bleeders!) Ian, you were one of them!
Grand master of the English language. The most diverse band in the late-1970’s. And nobody in punk could scream like him. A force of nature. ❤️
my grandad showed me Ian about a year ago, and it took months to get it stuck in my head, i told my grandad it got stuck in my head and we have now became best mates.
