How to paint realistic Luftwaffe squiggle camouflage with no airbrush! Part 2

- I invite you to watch the second in a three part video series. It is a method I developed which is an alternative to airbrushing complex camouflage schemes. It will be helpful in especially 1/48 and smaller scales. Note this series is not about the aircraft and their paint scheme accuracies - it is simply a new method to do fine line complex camouflages. #stuka #hasegawa #camouflage #paintpens #paintmarker #howtoairbrush
Tools I use that are available on Amazon:
Paint Pens/Markers:
Montana pen with default 0.7mm tip: amzn.to/2jIeV5J
Montana 0.5mm tips: amzn.to/2jIeV5J
Montana 0.7mm tips: amzn.to/2l6CxkY
Montana 1mm tips: amzn.to/2l8aphl
Molotow Pen Set - Excellent starter set: amzn.to/2l81f4v
Thanks for this tutorial and links, I’ll be giving this a try as this is my first attempt at this type of camo pattern
Let me know how it goes!
The Me-109/Bf109 Tropical scheme is another work of art!
Whoa! Incredible. Can't wait to give it a try on a Fiat g.50. Thank you for the excellent video.
You're welcome!
This looks like the meanest leopard! Impressive paintjob, i never thought about using these acrylic pencils to paint my models. Thank you so much for the tip!
You are welcome. I am working on the Uhu's camouflage at the moment and the paint consistency is a problem....the pen does not seem to like it too much, so we shall see.
The Stuka is incredible!
Definitely worthwhile. Will definitely try getting hold of some of those pens.
Just remember to practice Paul. Check out the Uhu build I am doing as well....I am using my pen method there again....thanks for the comment!
Nice job!
Thanks!
Camuflaje espectacular
Excellent technique...thank you for sharing.
You're welcome Stephen!
beautiful job Keeto !
Thanks!
Great video and some very helpful advice. Thanks for the links on the pens. I think I shall give them a try. You have a great sense of humour too!
Thanks for the kind words...I don't think too many people get my sense of humor but I appreciate your comment. The paint pen method works great it just take some practice.
Where can I find these pens?
Hello Keeto,
I'm very impressed indeed...found your post during a search for camouflage techniques.
I am not really new to the world of modeling, but I still work with airbrush and brush (mostly tracked vehicles). Recently I bought a BF110 and JU87 (because a long time ago I was more fascinated with airplanes as a kid). I was wondering how I could apply such fine camouflage on 1/72 and 1/48 scale. And you have already offered the solution!!! Many thanks and greetings from Belgium
It's a pleasure! Love to see your results.
i always found the german camo 'very interesting' indeed. reminds me of some of the camo on fish i've caught over the years.
Tried with Molotow pens and works great, really good tips and videos. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
That’s great Matthew! I tried with them but I prefer the Montana pens at the moment. I am using this method again on my current Uhu build. Working on part 2 of the build video. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great video. Enjoyed the technique/demo. And entertaining too! Sub'd.
Awesome, thank you!
@@KeetoModelWorks Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Bravo!
Thank you!
Awesome!!
Amazing !!!! But one question, I tried to make the same type of marks using a pen Posca (0.7mm), however the edges of the camo marks became a little bit blur, not as you get hard edges. I think that the paint is too much solved in the Posca, but I would like to here your opinion.
Hi, thanks! I am not sure as I have not used Posca pens before. One of the reasons I used empty pens is so that I could control the consistency of the paint etc. I have found there is a difference between thinning colours, i.e green needs more thinning than blue etc - even if it is the same brand of paint. I hope that makes sense and helps you.
Beautifulll ... 👍
Thanks!
Thank you so much for the great tip👍🏻. I have a "spaghetti" camo to paint on a 1/72 FW-190 and also on a Me 110g 1/32 (I might be able to use a 0.2 airbrush for this one). The best is that I already have 2 pens that I was planning to use for Microset and Microsol but I really never felt the use for it, as a brush does the job. I just never thought about using them for paint, isn't that what they are originally made for ?😊. I realize that it's an old video but do you think that paint retarder can help, so that it doesn't dry on the tip of the pen? Thanks again👋🏻
It definitely will help! Good luck and let me know how it goes.
Can you tell me what paint you used for that tan base coat?
The tan color is: MISSION MODELS - MMP-019 DUNKELGELB LATE 1944 RAL 7028.
Sir hi, a very good method for painting, but can you please tell me where to get this PEN ?
They are available on Amazon, the links are in the description of the video.
Excellent video! I can't wait to try this method as I don't own an airbrush. Question, how would you add the faded mottling along the fuselage, similar to other paint schemes?
Thanks Gentry. This method actually leaves a very tiny soft edge if you cover the spots or dots again with a thinner tipped pen. In the first video - with the Hs-129 - you can see the effect. But I know what you are referring to and I actually do that kind of mottling with my airbrush. However, I have seen modellers use fine sponge and a dabbing technique before with some good results and a lot of practice...
@@gordon_stiemens Hey Gordon, one more question, can you offer any non-airbrush tips on applying the swirl or Luftwaffe spiral to the propeller hubs? Maybe your paint pen might offer better control than using a brush?
@@distractedgeek naaaaaaah, I always make or buy the masks to make the swirl...or struggle with the decals for hours, LOL. I think the pen will give a better result than a brush but it is till going to give you a rougher edge than using a mask or decal...
Hey Gordon, I just PM'd you on your Keeto Facebook page. I need to pick your brain if you have the time.
Я сперва подумал, что фламастер это жидкая маска... Эта штучка с акриловой краской и эффект как от применения губки, так?)
No, not exactly. With the pens you have substantially more control of where exactly you want the paint, unlike with a sponge....the effect is also different from using a sponge.
Thank you. A paint pen is a new concept to me for scale models. On a different note, your accent sounds good. Is Afrikaans your native language?
You are correct! LOL! I am a boer.
@@KeetoModelWorks are there african model kit companies?
@@dr.doppeldecker3832 somehow I missed your comment, literally years ago. Yes, there is one that I know of, Scaleworx based out of the Cape.
Can I put email colours in those pens? (BTW very good vid)
Thank you. I am not sure what email colours are?
@KeetoModelWorks for example, those in the metal containers from revell
@@russianbreadowski5245 I have not tried them. What I can advise is that these pens only work with acrylic paint. If you use true lacquer paints it will not work well.
@@KeetoModelWorks thanks man and again great video💪💪
You're welcome!@@russianbreadowski5245
