Awesome John! Good for you! I love a fresh start. My Primary studio is the entire finished basement of my home. Although I don't relocate, I do a refresh, Paint, restructure every year. nothing better than a fresh start! Wish you the best!
Thanks Rich! That’s a cool way to do it.
looks like a wonderful space that you have dialed in nicely, thanks for the tour around your new studio- congrats & enjoy!!
Thanks so much!
Hello From France John,
Nice to see your second studio part video.
you're in "The Place" now and that sounds great.
Nice to share your space with us , really nice studio tour.
can't wait to see you future shooting videos in this lovely place.
good luck for the continuation. :)
The Best
Merci beaucoup Stéphane! I can’t wait to share more shoots on this channel!
Nice space! Enjoy!👍🏾🙏🏾
Thank you so much!
Hey John, thanks for putting this video together! Really enjoyed the tour, you’ve got a really great space there with a lot of character and you’ve made it very flexible. I’m designing my first studio and your video was very helpful. Subscribed, and amazed I’d never seen your videos! Be well!
Thank you so much! I am glad you enjoyed it. A new studio tour will be coming soon!
Looks great! I wish you the best in your new studio.
Thank you so much!!
Such a wonderful space and studio! Good luck with your new place :-)
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
Very, very nice digs. Good fortune will follow. Congratulations.
Thanks! I really appreciate it!🙏🏼
Awesome studio. I am searching for a new studio now and seeing how you were able to work with the carpet and have hardwood 4x8 panels to use as flooring when shooting is a great idea. I have finding many spaces with carpet. Thank you for the video and the tips on what equipment to get.
I am happy to hear it was helpful. Thank you!
John congrats on the new studio and move, looks great.
Thanks! I really appreciate it.
Enjoyed the video. Very inspirational. I miss Chicago (only a little). If you hate carpeting as much as I do, I would recommend just putting panel flooring on top. That way you can just disassemble when you get ready to leave.
Thanks! Not a bad idea. I am not so sure that I will be in this space long term.
I love the space. I'm always on the lookout for something similar down here in my city. Wish me luck! :)
Thanks! Good luck too you.
Congratulations, mate! Looks great.
Thanks Paul! I really appreciate it!
Looks awesome John!
Thanks Jamal!
i’ll bet we could get some great bokeh spheres out of that shirt 😄 - salute, your workspace is 🔥🔥🔥
LOL probably so! Thanks!
Wonderfull studio!!!
Thank you so much!
Awesome
Thanks for sharing
I have a small studio always looking for ideas
Thanks Karl. I hope it helped. 🙏🏼😊
Thanks!
Thanks!
Nice space, man! Congratulations!!
Thanks! I really appreciate it!
Nice studio! Great space to create!
Thank you so much! I am headed back there in a few minutes.
Big congrats on the new space and expansion of your existing venture. What a space it is. It reminds me of a movie called "Closer" with Julia Roberts, where she plays a photographer (who uses a Hasselblad like mine...ha ha). Looks amazing. What a time you'll have working in there. I am jealous. :-)
Ha! Thanks Ted. I just watched the trailer - A love quadrangle --- I am going to have to check with out! However, I hope you use flash with your Hasselblad. =P
@@JohnGress I will be as of next week! Just bought a Bowen’s Gemini 750PRO! Not in your league of lights but a good start I hope 💪 your earlier videos inspired me to the mid range options
That is great to hear! I am sure it will be a lot of fun!.
Nice Studio!!
Thank you so much!
Great that you have two sets, one at each end of the studio space. So many options including natural light. Wondering how long is the studio space such that you were able to accommodate two shooting areas?
Thank you so much! 33' or 10 meters.
❤
Thanks!
Looks great, love the natural light. Could you indicate the ceiling height in the new studio, looks lower than your previous studio so will be interested to see your 190cm Litemotiv is use.
Thanks! It’s 10’ 3” or about 3m. I used the 190 once-no issues. Taller ceilings would be better but there wasn’t a lot of spaces available that were functional when I was looking.
Wow lots of good space. Do you need to block the windows for som shoots or do you wait until dark?
Thanks. I block them all the time. sometimes the struggle is real!
thanks for sharing John! I see you have the Elinchrom One in a parabolic? How do you like it??
🙏🏼 The one? I think it’s great for modifiers under three feet. I’m thinking about buying two more because they take up so little space in my kit.
That’s a cool place! How do you deal with the windows, do you have something to block off daylight?
Thanks! There are shades at the painted backdrop end.
@0:19 "a few week ago with the help of my HUSBAND and My Friend" , Bit confused... 😍
Two people 😁
Nice and big 🔥🔥💯one hope to own a studio 🤦♂️
Thank you so much! You will.
hey, I loved the tour! can you do a video about composition, backdrops and things like that?
My thanks! I’ll send you links to videos on those topics. 😁

Thank you so much Jose!
Where did you get those beautiful hand painted backdrops?
Thanks! Storm backdrops and Gravitybackdrops 😊😊😊
Nice Green chairs. at 8:26 you have an octabox with reverse strobe. could you tell me more about that ? i cant really buy them over in Amsterdam.
Thanks! I love them! That modifier is a copy of a Broncolor Para 88. Here’s a video I made about it. 😁 ua-cam.com/video/CxT6o4I0Pvs/v-deo.html
@@JohnGress oh thank you, a video about it is waaaayyyy better. love your channel/work, great inspiration..
Thank you so much!
All those backdrops and things are giving me extreme sticker shock. :P
(Also, you spelt "Photography" wrong in the video title.)
Ha! Thank you so much!
Where in Pilsner are you located and do you rent out the space as well?
I do! Near 18th and Halsted. johngress.com/home/chicago-hourly-rental-photo-studio-with-gear-included/
Have you tried the motorized background roll system, much easier to use and change the paper out, I have two sets of 4 in my studio. Would never go back to a chain system.
I haven’t. I guess this is the interim step.
Which ones are you using, I am looking to upgrade to motorized ones myself. Thanks.
Nice John...much bigger space isnt? and yes you are right... I hate the plastic chains... they snap all the time soon I will have just half meter of it on mine lol
Ha! Thanks. The old place was taller but it was smaller. Ill be able to run two sets at a time in this place if needed. Or one set and room for at least 3 Hair stylists or make up artists. Today and tomorrow I am shooting both stills and video on different sets. =)
@@JohnGress looking forward for your next posts and videos love your work man I bought a mole Richardson because of you lol
Thank you so much. Cool! One small tip, on the back it will say you can use lower wattage bulbs, if you can, downgrade because the light will be much cooler. A 1K bulb in a 2K light wont melt the model and a 500w bulb in a 1K will allow the model to hold the light.
@@JohnGress it's already running on around 500w. It's using a 1k bulb but supposed to be using 220v here in Brazil electricity is 127v so the output power get bellow half of the bulb infact will be outputting something around 300w ... I'm not using it in photos yet... I just start buying because they are really beautiful hahaha bought 1 MR plus two other fresnels just felt in love with it lol
That’s great! I keep seeing people selling the 2ks chrome plated with 60watt bulbs in them for $$$$!
It's really weird to leave a magical place for one, in my opinion, too narrow and especially with a far too low ceiling: - / I don't think you will stay long in this building. Thanks for the interesting sharing!
As I said last week (ua-cam.com/video/cgmDWjXWHQA/v-deo.html) the old space was also our apartment. I had to leave it behind, because we bought a house. While it was taller, which was great, the floor space was less. Plus this new space is in the center of the city so we'll see if its limitations work and if the location brings in more revenue.
The sun might fade and deteriorate your paper backdrops in that area over time. Might not be bad if they are used and cut often.
Good thing I unusually keep them rolled up.
@@JohnGress lol you would know better than me in this case.
@@jusunas I am about to add a rack for 6 with three colors, so I guess we will see what happens in 6-months.
@@JohnGress yeah. I just remember the feeling of picking things up and them crumbling in my fingers. It hurts lol.
Also love the space.
Did that mac book pro make it?
I don’t understand your question?
@@JohnGress just a joke about the mbp precariously balanced on the shelf edge 😁
Oh. Idk why it was sitting like that. I don’t think it was hanging over tho as much as it looks because I don’t remember ever thinking omg this almost fell. 😁
Jesus loves you bro. Thank you!
Thank you!
@@JohnGress You are so welcome!
..."with help of your husband and friend"?....still trying to get it...
I think I said with the help of my husband and a friend.
