I have just got my 290 and its great. You can drive the car without the Exhaust sound if you want by setting the individual mode to ECO (this also shuts down engine when you cruise and not needing power). I can honestly say the car is the best from Seat yet and this is my fourth.

I have ordered a 290 which will replace my Leon FR 1.8. This will be my fourth Seat and each one has been very reliable. The video now ensures me that choosing the Cupra over the VW was the right choice.
+TheGetawayer. I find it strange that people moan about the exhaust sound. I also own Mercedes AMG and Porsche Boxster S and the exhaust tone are as loud and sometimes too intrusive. If people find the sound not to their liking, buy a more basic model.
I legitimately thought there was something wrong with my tablet or your video in the beginning. I don't understand why so many companies offer that exhaust sound now. It's ok for an occasional burp not all the time. I blame mercedes for starting this craze! Anyway, I wish we had these vehicles in the states as I prefer their styling over VW. Keep the videos coming, we appreciate them!

You can of course drive the car in comfort mode for less noise and even make an individual setting in the Dynamic Chassis control, with firm suspension but normal engine mode. I'm usally not the biggest fan of these sounds myself, but in this car, I did like it. Maybe because people don't expect a Seat to sound like this :) Hopfully they will come to the US at some point ! - Guido
When you hear it IRL it sounds really good. DSG for me all the way. Those DSG noises and the crackling on the overrun really add excitement! And when yuo are doing the daily run, you can just switch to comfort mode and enjoy silence.
Good review, but personally don't care for the boy-racer-sound exhaust. It was fine on the 280; anyone who wants more noise can always go aftermarket. Great car though.
290hp on a FWD car is stretching it. No matter how good the diferential is, there'll always be a tendency to understeer and to lose traction. The ESP must be working overtime. Excelent review Guido.

+PJ Francis Dankeschön ! Der Pressewagen war fast neu mit ca. 2000km auf der Uhr. Ich glaube allerdings nicht, dass Du den kaufen möchtest, wenn noch ein paar Tests damit gefahren wurden :) Obwohl die Wartung direkt vom Hersteller sicher die beste ist, die man kriegen kann. Die Jungs sind spitze. Darf ja kein Mangel beim Testen auffallen oder entstehen. Ich kann Dir leider nicht sagen wann und wie diese Autos in den Verkauf kommen. Einfach mal bei Seat Deutschland in Weiterstadt anrufen und fragen...Für mehr Sound empfehle ich Dir noch die Videos von Automann TV zu diesem Auto. Lass ihm einen Gruss von mir da ;) Grüsse, Guido

What do you think about reliability of engine in long run? I mean... Alot of GTi's over the years have had alot of problems and especialy new golf R which has the same engine tune as cupra 290... Does it have same internals as golf gti mk7 with 231hp? And if i may ask how cheap/costly is maintenance on dealership compared to GTi/S3 or maybe 2.0 184 FR model? should've given the last cupra more character with an exhaust like this it's one of the few negatives i have with mine. if all they've done is deleted the middle silencer i guess that's something i could get done. thanks Guido and you're right, standard seats don't offer much side support.
I really like this Seat Leon Cupra...I think it's the best and the most rational hot hatch. The Mégane RS, well, they're everywhere, the new Type-R it's too flamboyant for my liking and the 308 GTI has a 1.6THP, I mean...really? 1.6? ...but I think the Leon Cupra's reign is about to go down when the new Focus RS is available!! My opinion! :P How is the Transmission? I heard the 280 twin-clutch gearbox wouldn't shift down under heavy braking on circuit? Did that happened to you? Hell of a nice review and video editing as usual. Keep getting better and better. Take care Guido!
+David Araújo Thanks buddy ! Yeah, Focus RS should be awesome, I'm not sure if I can film it actually, but yeah. Peugeot doesn't have the guts for a Getawayer test and I don't really like french cars anyway ;) I had no problems with the DSG in my car. It felt better than in the Audi RS3 :)
When you move the gear stick into "automatic" do you then tap it to the side to put it into "DSG" mode? I am confused on how you override the normal full automatic gear changes.
Also ich persönlich finde den Sound vom neuen Leon Cupra 290 für SERIENZUSTAND schon mega gelungen. Das gebrabbel beim abtouren, das fatschen beim Schalten unter Last!! das knurren beim Gasgeben. Eine Stufe lauter und es wäre perfekt (ähnlich beim A45, der knallt RICHTIG herrlich!). Wer es nicht mag muss sich halt einen VW oder einen Audi holen, die sind auf mehr Ruhe getrimmt.....
+TheLedoubleS Also als ich den gefahren bin hörte ich nicht wirklich viel von diesem geknalle... Denke liegt daran dass die Schweiz ein EU Gesetz die 75db Grenze bei Fahrzeugen (Neuwagen) ab dem Baujahr 2016... Schade :(
+robinheiz Man muss das schon etwas provozieren und den Motor richtig warm fahren. Paar mal kurz kräftig beschleunigen, dann sollte es beim Gaswegnehmen kommen ;)

Also ich hör bei meinem 290 5D nur die DSG "Fürze", aber nix beim Abtouren, obwohl ich schon alle möglichen Drehzahlen bis 4000 versucht hab. Nichtmal mit Fenster runter. Sogar bei meiner Probefahrt im 280 ST hab ichs gehört mit offenem Fenster... merkwürdig. Aber eventuell muss der Wagen erst richtig eingefahren werden. Hab ihn noch nicht ans Limit gepusht, da ganz neu.
+Lux Gear Thanks ! I would do a test drive and go from there. Personally I don't think you can feel the 10hp and the torque has stayed the same, so putting a sports exhaust on a 280 could have a similiar effect if you just bought one :)
Can it be turned off? The weird poping sound from the exaust I mean. And is it made by burning fuel in exaust system like it was the case with RS5 before redesign.
Your presentation always on point.As for the Cupra 280 my misses had one before. Real fun to drive, This sounds no different, but I'd rather stay with my M4 Lol

TheGetawayer Sorry I meant the 280 was fun, so I mean the 290 is probably no difference meaning on terms of fun. As for the sound yes there's a huge difference, although I do think the novelty of that poping sound will wear off quickly. I personally like it though.
in the uk you cant spec winter pack with the black pack. with the black pack you get heated bucket seats as standard amongst other stuff but there is no option for the winter pack, however you can spec winter pack with the standard cupra. as soon as you spec the black pack the winter pack becomes unavailable. Look for yourself on the uk seat build site.
I believe it's a car configurator glitch. Same how before you couldn't spec the sat nav and the sound package. I'm sure in a dealership there won't be any issues.

+Patrick Lopez Danke Patrick, freut mich ! Das sind die optionalen Schalensitze, Innenfläche Alcantara außen sollte Kunstleder sein. Wenn ich mich richtig erinnere kosten die 450€ und sind eine absolute Empfehlung von mir. Der Sound hat sich deutlich gebessert, vorallem bei den DSG-Modellen. Den Schalter bin ich noch nicht gefahren, da weiß ich es leider nicht :) Grüsse, Guido

Thanks ! I'd pick the Cupra, but the GTI has a nicer interior and the suspension in Comfort is more comfortable than the Cupras. Test drive them both and go from there. I also have a video of the GTI PP if you missed it :) - Guido
Nice review Guido! Do you know if the backfire that you get with the dsg if you downshift or you´re at 4000 rpm, is coming in a manual as well? And is the sound in general the same in a manual?

A C63 (with the 6.2L engine) will do a similar continual-overrun burbling/popping in 2nd and 3rd gears if you can find a decent downhill section. It's at quite low speeds, though--maybe 25mph (40kph).
This car is artificially held back not compromise VW Golf. It is technically possible for this car to have the same 300bhp engine as the golf, just like its 4 wheel drive. If you're thinking of buying this car, just remember that it's not all it could have been because a product manager in the VW group decided it should be "less" than a golf.
+lastlondon I disagree: This is a great compeditor to the Golf GTI : More power, very compeditive price. The Golf R cost over 6000 € more than this car. Keep that in mind, buddy ;)

I'd have the Leon over a GTI Performance, but the Golf R is my favourite hot hatch with the best suspension, playful handling and just a traction advantage with the awd that can't be beaten by anything with fwd and normal street tires :)
Nachdem ich diese Woche einen nichtverschuldeten (fast) wirtschaftlichen Totalschaden mit meinem 1.2 TSI Rapid erlitten habe, wird nächste Woche der Cupra 290 DSG als Ersatz bestellt. Und ich werde voraussichtlich 4-5 Monate Lieferzeit am beten sein, dass er in der Prio etwas höher rutscht ^^ Nachdem ich vor ein paar Monaten einen TT 230 Quattro über ein WE bekommen habe, ist der Sound beim Schalten (bzw. das Furzen) mittlerweile schon fast zur Sucht geworden.
Very cool car and review! Is the exhaust switchable? Those sounds are fun but not all the time. A quiet mode for in town or during early/late hours is always useful. Not a big fan of the upshift bangs (Rotzer). Reminds me of the A45 and feels overdone. The backfire is better but the duration of them seems a bit long. Or did you wiggle your foot to keep it popping? ;-) Nice onboard sound capturing! That is also something I like to do with my videos. Did you place a mic near the exhaust?
Wow! This is a great review of the new 290 exhaust. I just bought myself a 2016 Cupra ST DSG 280, and as you stated - it has bit "lame and safe" exhaust sound. I was planning to maybe do the middle silencer delete (Milltek is really expensive, and will I sound better?) but wanted a review before. How do you think the exhaust sound is in the car coupe when cruising? I dont want the any disturbing resonance sound when going down the highway! Thanks :)
+bestofblocket You can switch it to comfort and its no problem at all, no backfire either :) I don't know about the Miltek exhausts or any other brands, but I'm sure there will be more aftermarket options coming over this year and you should find something that might sound even better than this factory exhaust on the 290 :)
thanks for the review guido. those seats .. lovely! but the exhaust pipes .. i dont know, for my taste they look to much like aftermarket parts slightly killing the overall great design of the cupra.
A few of the comments I've read in British tests have suggested it's a great car but it's price point is similar to the new Focus RS which is a problem for the Seat.
+evoermine This car starts at around 33.000 euro, the Golf R at 38.000 and I think the Focus RS is 40.000€, all with manuals. Plus remember this car is fwd and not awd, so it's more in a league with the Focus ST or Golf GTI, I think
+TheGetawayer: now noticed your comment in the video. The VAQ is not just an electronic diff like xds that works on the brakes, but a *real* locking diff, electronically controlled. But for it to really do it's work, you need to (partly?) switch of stability control...

Beim 290er ST wurde der MSD nicht weggelassen, da es sonst im Innenraum (insbesondere im Fond-Bereich) zu sehr gedröhnt hätte. Dadurch klingt er aber auch leider genau wie der 280er...

Sieht bei mir auch so aus, nur ist die Frage ob man beim Facelift weiter die hohen Rabatte bekommt...Dazu munkelt man über eine elektronische Handbremse :-(

Unverständlich, warum diese Sitze so von dir gelobt werden. Sie sind hart, dünn gepolstert, keine Lordosen Verstellung (nicht mal manuell), keine Neigungsverstellung! Die normalen Sportsitze mir elektronischer Verstellung sind 100x besser!
Sicher eine Frage der Statur, ich mag beide Sitze gerne. In unserem Dauertester 290er bei Auto Bild Sportscars gab es aber auch unterschiedliche Meinungen. Danke für Dein Feedback👌

The crackling sounds are more disturbing than enjoyable .. Otherwise it sounds quite great.

I can't comment on that. I only drive these cars for a few weeks and press cars are serviced to perfection :)

+LittleCD It only does that in the Cupra and Sport modes, so no worries, you can also made an Indiviudal setting in the DCC :)

Can it be turned off? The weird poping sound from the exaust I mean. And is it made by burning fuel in exaust system like it was the case with RS5 before redesign.
I filmed all the footage in the Cupra mode, in Comfort its not that noisy and no backfire ;)

+SLEWER Thanks ! You really think there is no difference ? I only drove the manual 280, so no idea how the 280 DSG sounds in person, but on start up and driving by, the 290 sounded louder to me and less muffled than the 280 manual
TheGetawayer Sorry I meant the 280 was fun, so I mean the 290 is probably no difference meaning on terms of fun. As for the sound yes there's a huge difference, although I do think the novelty of that poping sound will wear off quickly. I personally like it though.

in the uk you cant spec winter pack with the black pack. with the black pack you get heated bucket seats as standard amongst other stuff but there is no option for the winter pack, however you can spec winter pack with the standard cupra. as soon as you spec the black pack the winter pack becomes unavailable. Look for yourself on the uk seat build site.
I believe it's a car configurator glitch. Same how before you couldn't spec the sat nav and the sound package.
I'm sure in a dealership there won't be any issues.

+Patrick Lopez Danke Patrick, freut mich ! Das sind die optionalen Schalensitze, Innenfläche Alcantara außen sollte Kunstleder sein. Wenn ich mich richtig erinnere kosten die 450€ und sind eine absolute Empfehlung von mir. Der Sound hat sich deutlich gebessert, vorallem bei den DSG-Modellen. Den Schalter bin ich noch nicht gefahren, da weiß ich es leider nicht :) Grüsse, Guido

Thanks ! I'd pick the Cupra, but the GTI has a nicer interior and the suspension in Comfort is more comfortable than the Cupras. Test drive them both and go from there. I also have a video of the GTI PP if you missed it :) - Guido

+TheGetawayer Yes! The bangs you only get with DSG. But i don´t like them very much :D And that´s why i wanted to know if that´s the single thing which is different if you compare the dsg with manual cupra 290.
A C63 (with the 6.2L engine) will do a similar continual-overrun burbling/popping in 2nd and 3rd gears if you can find a decent downhill section. It's at quite low speeds, though--maybe 25mph (40kph).

Nope, its still nice feeling though.
This car is artificially held back not compromise VW Golf. It is technically possible for this car to have the same 300bhp engine as the golf, just like its 4 wheel drive.
If you're thinking of buying this car, just remember that it's not all it could have been because a product manager in the VW group decided it should be "less" than a golf.
+lastlondon I disagree: This is a great compeditor to the Golf GTI : More power, very compeditive price. The Golf R cost over 6000 € more than this car. Keep that in mind, buddy ;)

I'd have the Leon over a GTI Performance, but the Golf R is my favourite hot hatch with the best suspension, playful handling and just a traction advantage with the awd that can't be beaten by anything with fwd and normal street tires :)

Nachdem ich diese Woche einen nichtverschuldeten (fast) wirtschaftlichen Totalschaden mit meinem 1.2 TSI Rapid erlitten habe, wird nächste Woche der Cupra 290 DSG als Ersatz bestellt. Und ich werde voraussichtlich 4-5 Monate Lieferzeit am beten sein, dass er in der Prio etwas höher rutscht ^^ Nachdem ich vor ein paar Monaten einen TT 230 Quattro über ein WE bekommen habe, ist der Sound beim Schalten (bzw. das Furzen) mittlerweile schon fast zur Sucht geworden.
Very cool car and review! Is the exhaust switchable? Those sounds are fun but not all the time. A quiet mode for in town or during early/late hours is always useful.
Not a big fan of the upshift bangs (Rotzer). Reminds me of the A45 and feels overdone. The backfire is better but the duration of them seems a bit long. Or did you wiggle your foot to keep it popping? ;-)
Nice onboard sound capturing! That is also something I like to do with my videos. Did you place a mic near the exhaust?

Wow! This is a great review of the new 290 exhaust. I just bought myself a 2016 Cupra ST DSG 280, and as you stated - it has bit "lame and safe" exhaust sound. I was planning to maybe do the middle silencer delete (Milltek is really expensive, and will I sound better?) but wanted a review before. How do you think the exhaust sound is in the car coupe when cruising? I dont want the any disturbing resonance sound when going down the highway! Thanks :)
+bestofblocket You can switch it to comfort and its no problem at all, no backfire either :) I don't know about the Miltek exhausts or any other brands, but I'm sure there will be more aftermarket options coming over this year and you should find something that might sound even better than this factory exhaust on the 290 :)

thanks for the review guido. those seats .. lovely! but the exhaust pipes .. i dont know, for my taste they look to much like aftermarket parts slightly killing the overall great design of the cupra.

A few of the comments I've read in British tests have suggested it's a great car but it's price point is similar to the new Focus RS which is a problem for the Seat.
+evoermine This car starts at around 33.000 euro, the Golf R at 38.000 and I think the Focus RS is 40.000€, all with manuals. Plus remember this car is fwd and not awd, so it's more in a league with the Focus ST or Golf GTI, I think

Weiss jemand warum beim ST 290 eine andere Abgasanlage eingebaut ist?
Beim 290er ST wurde der MSD nicht weggelassen, da es sonst im Innenraum (insbesondere im Fond-Bereich) zu sehr gedröhnt hätte. Dadurch klingt er aber auch leider genau wie der 280er...
Ist das wirklich der Original Sound vom 290er ? Der ist ja mal VIEL besser als beim alten *___*

DSG7 can't take more than 330nm if i'm correct. Sporty cars will always get the DSG6 (max 480nm) anyway!

Unverständlich, warum diese Sitze so von dir gelobt werden. Sie sind hart, dünn gepolstert, keine Lordosen Verstellung (nicht mal manuell), keine Neigungsverstellung! Die normalen Sportsitze mir elektronischer Verstellung sind 100x besser!
Sicher eine Frage der Statur, ich mag beide Sitze gerne. In unserem Dauertester 290er bei Auto Bild Sportscars gab es aber auch unterschiedliche Meinungen. Danke für Dein Feedback👌
