@@LazerzZ Thanks. If I do find it necessary, I may update this comment to include other key moments, as I don't know if I got all the important moments.
To answer the thing about the legendary ships possibly not being canon: Only the achievements are not regarded as necessarily canon or not. However synchronisation _is_ canon. It is the 100% historic events of the ancestors lives. The Legendary Ships are tracked in Edward's DNA and thus getting 100% sync, the canon Edward playthrough, is dealing with those Legendary Ships. This is also why Edward pickpocketing the Templars as an optional objective works. It's not just a "haha look what Edward can do", it _is_ a canonical action Edward took. Edward _did_ pickpocket those men. Regardless of player action, canonically, Edward was a cheeky pirate and robbed all those men where they stood.
And it brings up on how despite how advanced the Animus is in reading the memories of the dead through their descendants or DNA, it also allows certain leeways that a significant and a true part of someone's life happen. Thats why there are certain leeways you could take to kill a target and the true way of them dying is an optional objective.
@@memecliparchives2254 Well here's the great thing about _original_ AC lore, that has since basiclaly been ignored since the RPGs. The Animus reads not recorded fact, but memories of those facts, and memories can be _wrong._ It's why cities to the Assassins look like playgrounds, why they're much smaller than they actually are, why the Caribbean looks like a mess, and so on. The Animus doesn't simulate the world, it doesn't figure out what actually happened and you're just playing through it, it is just what the ancestor remembers happening. There are two great bits of lore regarding this. The first is in Brotherhood with the Christina missions. Ezio would occasionally see a woman around Rome who looked like Christina, and these would surface some repressed memories right there in the middle of Rome. To the animus, Ezio remembering things is no different to him experiencing them, so Desmond experiences being in Rome to suddenly being in Florence as a much younger Ezio, and then back to Rome. Ezio's DNA recorded the memories as if they happened live, right then, and the animus reading this playback just did what it was told. The other bit of lore comes from AC4, with a computer terminal lamenting that they can't find Assassin hideouts by just putting captured assassins into the animus. Thanks to cars being monotonous, people sort of zone out while driving. Abstergo could take the exact same series of left and right turns the person remembers taking and it'll take them somewhere completely wrong because genetic memory just isn't recording these boring events properly. And that's why the animus was so fascinating. It wasn't flawless, but it was better than reading a biased book. These days however, nope the animus just simulates everything and is 100% correct to the point of even being able to render places not only lost to time but also where the DNA sample never even went. Somehow? In regards to what you said about leeways in killing targets, yeah. The synchronisation level is what comes into play here. The genetic memory permits you to go off the tracks of definite history a bit so long as you hit the key parts, ie, target died, but there is a canonical way to do it as well which is what achieves full sync.
I think this is great for the most part, but also weakens some story moments occasionaly. The example that comes to mind is the optional objective of dealing with the natives guarding the observatory non-lethally. As talked about in the video, the sequence has a much greater impact if Edward does actually kill the natives in that scene.
@@reno9821 While I agree it would have put more drama and weight on Edward and his relationship with the Assassins, I feel like it would go against Edward's character to kill them. Edward is not a monster who indiscriminately kills, he is rather noble. Despite being a pirate you get desynced if you kill too many small fishing boats manned by civilians, clearly Edward did not attack innocents. And given his sympathies to slaves and poors, it is rather safe to assume he doesn't want to kill the innocent natives just defending their home while he makes his way inside. Of course however, the fact Edward doesn't desync when killing them means he does acknowledge he was violent towards them.
Literally the only thing that i could think to complain about in this game is it was the one that started the trend of Altair's robes being glued to the legs of characters
OG AC3 actually started that but considering the game is a pain in the ass to 100% full sync can't blame people for not wanting to unlock them there, remaster somewhat fixed them
James claims he doesn't expect many to watch the whole video. Maybe we can all give a comment to show that we who watched all of it support his work and love it. :)
I think Black Flag has the best AC storyline. It's not that it's mainly just about "assassins vs templars", I like the pirate theme, but I think it serves as a bridge between the story of Edward, the assassins and the Templars into the pirate setting. The ending of this game touched my soul after what happaned in AC 3, it was just great, you just have to feel it for yourself to understand.
Here we are again, another mammoth video and another instance of James showing why he's one of the best at what he does. The analysis, the passion, the personality (seriously love the cutaways, the bucket of lemons cracked me up), the vibes, all immaculate as ever. The sequence 8 section being a particular highlight, focusing on aspects I'd never consciously notice but makes so much sense and really enriches the experience. A hell of a video that does credit to a great story!
I remember when I first played AC4 my father bought the game and tried it out and played it for a few minutes and didn't like it, so he handed the controller to me, and I was completely enthralled in the time period, and I felt like I was Edward Kenway, I saw him change from a reckless greedy pirate into an assassin who was much wiser and experienced. At the end of the game when I finally killed Torres and he said Edward had taken far greater losses and not having no friends and future, I realized that all the people Edward was with and fought for were both dead, imprisoned. Plus, that ending scene with all of them at the table and the parting glass started playing I sobbed. For me Edward Kenway is the Arthur Morgan of assassin's creed.
James, I finally watched the whole thing and I dont think I can describe well enough how good this video is. I can’t imagine a better AC4 retrospective honestly, and I appriciate your perspective and insight into the franchise tremendously.
I’m Happy you still Remembered that Thumbnail Art Piece for Black Flag as it pays Homages to AC1. Which is befitting because the whole point of both of them is that it Focuses on the Creed.
Crazy coincidence, I just started replaying this game a week ago. It's a unique game in the lineup. It was an amazing experience to explore the new world.
Slight correction. Edward doesn't kill the Guardians when heading to the Observatory. The game even tells you this. You can even see in your own game play that you are pacifying them instead of killing them.
One thing that I find really interesting about this earlier AC games which you praise a lot and retrospected is how they are open to interpret for the player, not really explaining every aspect of the game(for example how you brought up the significance of the sea to Edward, even if that's not necessarily done on purpose). That's why this last 2 retrospectives (AC4 and AC1) work so well,as you said,as art because they leave the player interpret the event and the aspects of the game while giving it a root to do so.Again ,this proves that this games are ART for you and now for me(as I watched the retrospectives my view of the games changed drastically.Ty for that),because you view them from one perspective, while others don't really give a fuck and just enjoy junk food games... Anyway what I mean is while the games are good, you made them, with your work, seem so much better and I can see you put heart in your videos.Appreciate it a lot!
Love how you have it broke into sequences, it's nostalgic. And the background and your editing style are very immersive. I'm not far onto the video yet but I can tell your production quality on this one is through the roof
Literally started watching this video as something to watch while eating and went on to spend two days watching it to the end. Thankyou so much for making this video and reminding me how much I loved Black Flag and for so many extra insights about the characters and their actual real life story. I don't think I've watched a whole 5hr youtube video with such dedication but from the first 30 minutes you had me hooked (partly because I love this game). Subscribed ❤
This was a remarkable video. Throughly enjoyed, unsurprisingly. All of your AC videos tend to be masterful, as well as other retrospectives, like Horizon, Sonic, and Subnautica. I’ve watched all of your AC retrospectives, including the ones from the playlist you mentioned. I’ve always respected your understanding of this franchise better than most fans do anyway. I feel genuinely terrible that the series has soured your taste and trust from ever investing in it again. I genuinely found mirage to be a nice small addition to the franchise, albeit you don’t ever see yourself playing it. I can promise you that there are things worth your time and appreciation, you of all people would recognize them within the game, be it the narrative themes, classic gameplay, or short duration. I know you’ve said your piece here, and in the last Mirage video, but all I ask as a longtime fan of yours is to be open and give it a go anyway, I believe you might be surprised yet still. I know you’ve ignored my comments from the last Mirage video, since you already disagree without having tried it. Your take on it is something I’d personally watch in an instant, not to mention the long awaited Valhalla review you cancelled. As someone who understands AC so well, your voice is relevant and I’d love to hear your honest opinion once more, just not blind sighted.
Appreciate the kind words. As for Mirage, right now I really have no interest. There may be things here and there I think are cool, but I'm fairly certain it's a game I would have more issues with than anything else and I just don't feel like doing that to myself. If I ever do decided to give it a shot just for the hell of it, it would probably be when the spotlight isn't on it. I feel like people are far more open to critique when it's not the game everyone is currently in love with. Once it falls behind after Red and Hexe, maybe then I can try it, after the hype, when people have moved on and then give my actual thoughts on what it does or doesn't do. That's not to say I will, because I probably wont, but if I were to, those would probably be the conditions in which I would.
@@LazerzZ Really appreciate the response, James, thank you. I understand and relate to where you’re coming from, hence all the more frustrating it is to convey my message to you, since I’d feel and do the same if I hadn’t already. For years I’ve agreed with you on most things AC, if not all. I too struggled heavily with Origins, Odyssey, & Valhalla, albeit far more so with the latter two, yet also can appreciate objective redeeming qualities that exist within any of the three. Interestingly enough, this is where my plea is coming from altogether, because as someone who has resonated deeply with your Odyssey Broke Me video, as well as everything that came after it in retrospectives, I too didn’t believe Mirage would have any redeeming qualities. Ubisoft could never. I was convinced nothing Ubisoft can attempt would bring back that Assassin Fantasy again. I bought Mirage on a sale to scratch my own stubborn curiosity, and in hindsight I’m honestly glad that I did, because it was a far more an enjoyable experience than what I originally anticipated and thought it would be. Yes, I was expecting Valhalla-isque scenarios, yet below the surface I was surprised with what it managed to achieve that even Valhalla, Odyssey, and Origins couldn’t. I don’t mean to sound like a broken record, but alas I repeat that there are indeed redeeming qualities that I know for certain you’d appreciate and acknowledge. The game itself isn’t perfect with its lower budget, nor its Valhalla engine, but it undoubtedly aims to do the upmost right with what it has allowed itself to. I respect Bordeaux for that, as it seems this minor studio actually brought some of the old magic back, albeit not as grand or deep. I would argue they succeeded with the Assassin Fantasy, and even managed to throw in some of the Creed’s freedom paradox that coexists within Black Flag, AC1, and Valhalla as well. I know the chances are low as you’ve stated, and yet I do still look forward to such a potential day in the years to come, even if it’s a spontaneous stream. For what it’s worth, my favourite experience with the game was the Permadeath mode, titled ‘Full Synchronization challenge’, which superbly works quite well within the risk for reward factor, and got me wondering why no AC title had attempted such a feat before, as it works well within AC I found it. Having stealth tools return with social stealth, as well as improved parkour control and design layouts was also a classic welcome - all of which I’d like you to experience for yourself. Anyways, I’ve rambled on for too long. Whatever AC content you may develop down the road, rest assured thousands including myself will be right here ready for another masterpiece. You’ve grown a lot since I discovered you back in 2015, and have impressed time and time again with the experience and wisdom you’ve gained throughout the years. I look forward to seeing your future unfold further still, AC or not, though selfishly I hope for both. Cheers!
replayed it for the first time since it released about 6 months ago, i ended up playing it fully through 3 times in about 2 months. I don’t think i’ll ever get a game that takes my favorite game series and my favorite historical figures(pirates) and blends them together seamlessly into a near perfect open world rpg.
I dont care what anyone says Black flag is absolutely tremendous and beautifully written, is it perfect? No. But this game has earned its praise and gave us one of the best stories and characters and for me my favourite game of all time. I miss when AC had such masterful story telling. Also Lazerzz, i cant imagine the work and dedictaion this video took. It was a blast to listen and enjoy and your passion and entertaining personality made this so enjoyable to listen to. I’ve finished Black flag 4 times and didn’t know most of the things you dived into here. Thank you so much for this video, a 10/10 video and amazing presentation. ❤
After hitting the 5 hour point, definitely gotta say this is another masterpiece. Black Flag was my first ac game and u are one of the earliest youtubers I remember watching so this is all very nostalgic. Its deep stroy and themes is what got me into the franchise and although its a far cry (no pun intended) from what it used to be, its still fun to revisit the older games and what they mean to us. Hopefully more people see it from a new perspective and less ppl continue to call it a bad ac game. This was a very enjoyable video and I look forward to more great projects from you in the future. :)
What an incredible achievement and a great retrospective! The amount of work, love and thought you put into the research, writing and editing really shines through. AC4 was actually the very first AC I played and it has a special place in my heart. Listening to your detailed commentary on the deeper themes only legitimizes my appreciation for it and also my disappointment for where the franchise has gone since then. Thank you for this work!
Was not expecting this quality of literary analysis for a videogame of my childhood, really enjoyed it - particularly the reflection on the uncertainty of the sea and Edward's very own, how it serves both mechanically and narrative. Very keen point!
Babe wake up, lazerzz just dropped the ac4 retrospective. In al seriousness tho, I've been anticipating this video for years and I cannot wait to just watch it all in one sitting! Thank you james for all the hard work you put into these videos ❤
Can't believe I watched this entire thing in one sitting but I was hooked start to finish. I have developed a deeper appreciation for this particular instalment in the franchise and this was one of the best videos you've made! Big up man thank you for this.
It's amazing to see how James (despite Ubisofts unlimited bullshitery) still has a genuine love for some of this franchise and it's such a shame what happened to it. I meant to watch this in parts but sat through it because I couldn't stop watching, absolutely amazing video
This is undoubtedly the ultimate Black Flag video, honestly James I think you've really become one of my favorite Content Creators ever, these videos are genuinely pieces of Art! I just want to touch on what you said about Valhalla because I really didn't expect that, I used to be one of the few people who despite still having a laugh to all the memes created to ridicule the game never really changed his mind about at least the quality of the overall narrative presented in it, so hearing you say those things was really a breath of fresh air, it's not like you said the game is good and I don't even necessarily believe that myself (anymore 😅) but I did feel that a lot of the criticism thrown at it back then was indeed a little too harsh and it was nice hearing you acknowledge that, i really love how you used that segment to reinforce both games in relation to AC1... AC Valhalla 5 years later video next year?? Nah i'm joking... Unless... 🥴
@@mattjindrak I did word this comment weirdly. By content, I’m just referring to him putting thoughtful analysis into his videos and not regurgitating the same opinion as every other gamer in the AC community
I’d definitely love to for you to go and add your current knowledge and time spent on retrospectives with Brotherhood and AC2. Those are videos I would enjoy very much. In terms of this video lots of hard work went into it and it is a masterpiece. Can’t wait to see what Darby has to say when he watches it hopefully. How you talk over the tracks in the background like the British Empire while discussing that sequence is absolute art in my mind. Our views on Assassin’s Creed are so similar that it feels like i’m talking to myself, if I was actually smart and knew how to articulate what i’m thinking. You do that very well. Much appreciated James 👏🏼
Defy was the first video I saw from you. Thanks for this and all the other great videos throughout the years, James! (And of course, all the great videos in the future)
Wow, this is amazing. I don't usually watch reviews but I clicked on this because of my love for black flag. This analysis truly explores the very ingredients of such a successful game, something which I also haven't ever come across in regards to ac4 on UA-cam. Hats off to you James!
James is one of the only people on UA-cam that actually view Assassin's Creed as a form of art, and really see the beauty in it. I loved every minute listening to the passion you expressed and I thank you for it. I can only wait for the next one :)
I watched this whole ass thing while I was at work. This brings me so much nostalgia... I no longer play console games but as soon as I get home I'm rebuying it. Thank you for this video
I already loved this game but I think this video displayed so much more of the game I'd never thought about. I thought a 5 hour video might feel directionless but the writing in the video was so captivating, it kept me engaged the whole time 👏👏
I always love your retrospectives, your scrips are so insightful and I just love the way you talk about things that most wouldn’t even consider like how the sea and collectibles play into Edward’s arc Truly a masterful video mate
I've never been able to properly articulate WHY Black Flag is my favorite AC game, especially when the general consensus is that "it was a fun pirate game." I've always known this game stuck with me for so much more than just being the one I had the most fun with, but I could never explain exactly why. Now the only problem is that I don't think anyone who asks me will want to watch the beautiful 5 hour analysis that I respond with... Oh well. Maybe I'll just play it again.
Can I say, I really loved your segment about real life farmers becoming pirates. It really helped adding context to Edward's character and why is he the way he is especially with the novel being mentioned. Not many people bring this up and I love it.
James, I think you did an incredible job with this video. I've always considered Black Flag my favourite AC game but you really illustrated why this game, particularly the story and Edwards character, is so special. One moment that really stuck out to me is when you talked about the bit in sequence 11 when Edward finally goes to the assassins, mentioning that it's been 6 years since the start of the game. You mentioned earlier in the video that the game doesn't really convey the passage of time all that well and I agree with you there. However when you mentioned that it had been 6 years, I really felt it, like I had been on the journey with Edward just as much as I would have if I replayed the game myself. To bring out the same feelings, if not more so, that I would have felt playing the game, just by watching a video about it, is a testament to how well you make your videos. I hope that made a bit of sense, I'm shit at explaining myself but the point is, this video is a work of art. Seriously, congrats.
You *can* catch ledge behind you in the Kenway saga, or as I like to call it "catchback," but only under very specific circumstances. When you land on a parkour-compatible object with your feet, there are two states you can enter: If it's a flat object such a square-shaped rooftop, you'll be standing up as you do by default with your feet touching the ground. If it's a thin, non-standing object, or NSO, you'll automatically hunch over to keep your balance. If you parkour down from a flat object, you'll usually fall at a wide angle, causing you to overshoot any wall furniture on the way down, potentially resulting in fall damage and botching your controlled decent. When you fall like this you cannot catchback either, and it's a problem. Unless you're pretty low to the ground, you should try to avoid doing this. If you parkour down from an NSO however, you'll fall straight down, cleanly instersect with any wall furniture on your path, and you can catchback. Prioritizing this state is the key to smooth and sometimes extremely rapid descents. There is of course, an exception: When you short jump (right trigger ONLY) to a square ledge on the edge of a standing object and you are facing TOWARDS the ledge, you can get the same kind of straight down, fully catchable descent because of a vestige of ancient code left over from AC1 that temporarily treats square ledges as NSOs for a split second before you regain your footing. To induce this in the Kenway saga, you must hold B in midair BEFORE your feet touch the ledge. Queueing up parkour down inputs well in advance of when you want to do them is important to controlled descents in general because you cannot input air tackle while in midair, so the game doesn't try to override your movement with an abruptly violent attack. Check out my video "(AC Rogue) Controlled Descents in New York" for some examples You can hard block in the Kenway saga by holding B well in advance of an enemy attack. This is helpful if you want to get yourself pushed back towards a ledge or wall to set up an environmental counter later on. There is no reason to do environmental counters except because they look cool. In certain boss fights it might also be advantageous to counter, but then do nothing and wait for the response window to time out, which is kind of blocking-adjacent. I like to call these "empty counters," and they're the best way I've found to force double counters to eventually occur via the law of averages, which I like to do to start my videos. You can also use any tool from your arsenal to do special counters that sometimes have unique effects. Poison darts and throwing knives have a variation of the throw that's also lethal (or just sleepy), smoke bombs prevent follow up attacks, and guns and rope darts turn you into John Wick. In Black Flag counter resistances no longer exist with the exception of the brute and captain, who are completely exempt from the counter system at almost all times, so the only reason to do tool counters is because they look cool. Try the Hard Difficulty Mod by SergeantJoe to restore the counter resistances feature from AC3. See my "Advanced Kenway Counter Guide" series for more information. You can also chain kill with guns or rope darts (as long as you don't have an axe equipped), which will target two enemies at the same time. This is actually useful because it allows chain kills to indirectly target brutes and captains by proxying off a nearby regular or agile, but you can't do it onboard ships, which is where the vast majority of combat encounters take place. What the fuck. Make sure to hold B during this move in case you get attacked from offscreen. You can also combine two break defenses to fully floor an enemy, and then a light attack to ground stab them. Because backstabs are so overpowered in this game, this is slower every time and the only reason to do it is because it looks cool. To obtain other weapons you can put yourself in an unarmed state by either switching to fists or attempting to reload your guns, then disarming the next incoming attack. Switching from any weapon except hidden blades to fists has terrible frame data and prevents you from countering during the transition period, which is why we use the reload method. You can also try aiming a gun, then rolling your thumb back to the B button before it goes off. If you get a sword from a regular you can hold X and press towards him for a special kill. This is hard to do on KBM, try pointing the camera at him and holding W+LMB. The single sword has no advantages over dual swords, so the only reason to get it is because its moveset looks better. If you get a throwing knife from an agile it will be automatically selected from the tool cross so you don't have to hammer on d-pad right five times in a row, but you have to wait about a half second before you can throw it or your last selected tool will be used instead. If you're fast you can chain kill right after throwing a knife, so this is actually useful as long as you don't accidentally pivot towards a brute or captain while trying to get your camera under control. If the next incoming attack is by a brute or captain, you can't disarm them and you're screwed out of your combo. It sucks. You can try pressing RT+B to pick up the axe right after killing a brute, but I haven't had much luck getting this to work in Black Flag or Rogue for some reason. If you do get your hands on an axe it has a powerful throw move bound to Y which instantly kills every enemy type, but it only works at point blank range for reasons I don't understand. See my video "(AC4 Black Flag) Lively Havana - Combat Reaper" for some practical examples of mid-combat weapon switching Early game stealth is really annoying, I agree. What I recommend is following the stalking zones until you get into pistol range of the gunners, then lining up a headshot while you're still in there. Because you can aim while crouched, the only penalty for taking a shot is noise unless you're outside a stalking zone, and there are so many of them that you never should be. 2-3 guys will come to investigate in that annoying 99% SSI state. We can't throw smoke bombs at them like most AC games, so let them come to you, smoke yourself while you're in the stalking zone, and then pull them all down so you don't have to try to fight the game for double assassinations. Then repeat the process. If your target is out of range of a whistle, hold ONLY right trigger to pop up, SSI lure, smoke if necessary. If he's facing away from you, shoot in the back of the head, smoke the investigation. Make a mistake while moving between stalking zones? Smoke yourself. You can even shoot up in the sky as an improvised super whistle for weird edge cases. Lots of waiting around for stuff to happen, very tedious, but some pretty reliable combos there
It took me four days, but I completely watched the entire video and I felt as much nostalgia for black flag as i felt for ac 1 when I had watched your ac1 retrospective. Thank you, James, for helping me understand the themes of the games i loved better than I ever could have, your hard work left a mark on me and as someone young, it truly means a lot to me. thank you from the bottom of my heart, I will cherish this video as a fond memory of mine.
My ability to watch HBomb’s 4 hour video fully engrossed surprised me. But not taking a second away watching a 5 hours video about black flag is the least surprising thing to happen to me. Great video!
I've been in Assassin's Creed fan since the very beginning and have always loved the games and the story is told within them. I forgot a lot of the details over time, but I recently came across your channel and started listening to all your videos - and I just have to say that they have given me a whole new perspective and appreciation for just how amazing they are. You do a phenomenal job and I can't thank you enough for all the work that you put into this. Thank you so much. Ubisoft needs people like you steering the ship (no pun intended).
Man... I've been watching your AC related videos since like 2017. Even though I haven't always agreed with your views regarding the franchise, you knocked it out of the park with this one. I, too, analyse the philosophical messages behind the AC games (which are pretty much non existent in the recent entries), but I'd have never seen some of the scenes in this game the way you showed us in this video - it's just beautiful. I totally agree with you - Ubisoft should go back to making meaningful games that move players the way the older AC games used to, making the gameplay fit the narrative.
2:06:06 small piece of information you might’ve missed here. If you play with subtitles on you’ll realize that the Mayan assassins are commenting are how ridiculous Edward’s presence/wearing of the robes is. They KNOW you are there, which idk if they makes it better or worse but it explains why you can’t kill them ir fight them it a “test”
I think it's not just arguably the best Assassin's Creed game but the most unique of the lot as well. And quite possibly the best pirate game ever made. While one of the major problems with the series at the moment is that the idea of an Assassin Order has lost a lot of its mystique, the fact that the Order does not feature for most of the game actually WORKS for Black Flag. Its a testament to how well written the game is and Edward in particular. And somehow, Ubisoft couldn't even take what made Black Flag great and turn it into a multiplayer experience.
this is easily the longest youtube video i have watched all the way through. amazing editing, writing, analysis and research. I LOVE MULTI HOUR EXTENSIVE DEEP DIVES INTO IRRELEVANT VIDEO GAMES THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS!
Cannot even imagine how much of gargantuan task it was between writing, editing and recording for this video. Absolute King. Love these long as hell retrospective videos, my favourite type of content at this point 👌
Following your claim that you don’t expect many to watch James I thought I should mention that I think that your assassin’s creed content is the most thoughtful I’ve watched on UA-cam and it’s reinvigorated a healthy playthrough of multiple of the titles, thank you for bringing new life to games I’ve already played many many times 😊
Amazing! Just a few hours ago I was watching the Skull and Bones review from Luke Stephens and was wondering when LazerzZ is going to upload his Black Flag Retrospective... And here we are 😍😍😍 and even 5 hours, I'm flashed!
"It's not just a great pirate game, It's a tremendous Assassin's Creed game" Well said brother. Edward's story is so deeply moving and beautiful, for all the flaws with the game's structure, it's so full of heart and care. Legendary game.
The diving bell section prompted an interesting thought; Given you were talking about how being able to dive anywhere means that nothing is as interesting as when things are marked and can be crafted into an actually interesting place, it lead to the thought that the Assassin's Creed games have become a parody of the Creed itself; everything is permitted but lacks the wisdom to not act on it. You can dive anywhere, you're free to do so, but it'll be uninteresting and pointless, compared to the limits of a set area which seems less free but is more interesting. I hope this made sense.
I can't believe I've just watched a 5h critique of AC IV and you didn't mention once how ABSOLUTELY HORRIFYINGLY TEDIOUS, BORING AND FRUSTRATING having to go ashore on those random islands to grab chests or songs or animus things and then having to swim back to your boat (that distanced itself from the shore in the meantime) and climb back aboard was. Jokes aside, I think you nailed it well. I don't really remember 75% of the game but the last few sequences, and how Edward changes at the end, damn, that hits hard. That's what the true AC is, and I agree that it hadn't really been done like that since AC1. Thanks for this huge piece of work!
Woah finally done watching it (one sitting btw it’s 3AM now) great video as always. When Black Flag first came out I hated it, was in the group of people who thought it was just a pirate game. But considering what we’ve gotten recently along with growing up and getting a better understanding of the franchise I’ve gained a lot more appreciation for the game. Would love more AC content, Origins would be an interesting one since I absolutely love it. I think it would be great to see other perspectives, especially from someone who understands the franchise and has that passion. Obviously priority should be what you want to create! I know whatever it is will be a banger, looking forward to what’s next and watching that Freedom Cry video!!
James manages to outdo himself on every one of these retrospectives, this video really gave me a greater appreciation for black flag.i can’t to see what banger you drop next
This game truly is golden! Whenever I boot it up, it’s almost as if it has a pleasant smell of joy and gives me a feeling of tranquility. Great effort on making these Retrospective videos; there is definitely more to be said, but it’s better left here for now. Great job James!
About the observatory, I always assumed it was to track specific people, important people that actually have the measures and resources to not be tracked by technology, not the common folk with cellphones, or perhaps it was meant to be used on Templars themselves, in the game’s story as requirement to be in the order, the Templars took their own blood, maybe they wanted it so they could see in the eyes of any member, by doing that they basically would be making assassin double agents’s job 10 times harder, they would know if someone is kidnapped, killed or if he is betraying the order or simply doing something important, honestly the possibilities are massive.
I struggle keeping myself in a calm state usually I would listen to music but it's not as effective I've been listening to all the Assassins Creed hourly videos during my work which helps out quite alot and I'm so thankful for this youtuber to put such amazing detail, time and effort into these long videos. ❤🙏👍
I don't know for how long have I been subbed but I wasn't here for a while and I simply knew I was gonna watch the entire thing the instant I saw the thumbnail on my recommended section and I just finished it across 5 sessions or so. Black Flag was the AC I spent the most time on and a very special one to me in multiple ways and I'm really glad I watched this you're a freaking legend
this is arguably the most impactful video in my life youre a master at videos like this but yh black flag has always been my favorite game when i first started playing the game i was in highschool not wise but then the story resonated with me cus i have lost frnds at a young age but growing up its been a long time since ive played the game but this retrospective video opened my eyes it made me emotional and yh helped a lot great video man
Wow, that was one of the best five hours I've spent on this platform! Thank you for the phenomenal video on one of my absolute favorite games of all time! I completely agree with pretty much everything you brought up about the game's gameplay and story and overall impact, so thank you! Let's hope the remake that's coming can elevate it even more, or die trying.
Just got to Sequence 5 and I'm thoroughly enjoying this so far; the effort you put into your videos shines through clear as day, especially with all the external research you bring up throughout. Brilliant as always!
AC4 has one of the best endings in any medium, ever. Such a solemn ending, all the friends/ comrades he's lost along the way joining him on final time at that table. His daughter finding him and he leaving with her. All to the tune of a fantastic cover of 'The Parting Glass'. It's even more solemn when you know how Edward's story ends.
This video was an absolute pleasure to watch, James! I’ve watched all you AC retrospectives and loved them (the AC1 video being my absolute favorite). The Ezio Trilogy ones were great, but you’ve really stepped up your game with the AC1/4 retrospectives and found a style that is unique to you and truly is a work of art (especially the AC1 video, I love that so much and I’ll probably rewatch it again for a third time after commenting here 😂)! I - and I’m sure many others would agree - would love to see a revisit of the Ezio games in this form, but I’m also excited to see what else you have planned for this year 😊
5 hours of pure enjoyment. It's not just a retrospective it's a masterpiece breakdown of art some of which I would have missed if just played and explored it. Fills the gaps I've missed that's for sure, showing how deep this piece of art is
Once again, coming out with a fantastically worded retrospective. I really enjoyed your analysis of the game, its' philosophies and characters, as I did with your previous ones. This just made me appreciate Black Flag even more, and I'll definitely be playing the game again with a new perspective. Thank you for the content, it's always a pleasure!
Bro I loved this and I’m glad to see you still going after all this time both doing something you love as well as bringing a smile to my face when I see you upload as I know it’s going to be quality and enjoyable. Thank you for all your hard work on this project and I can’t wait to see what you work on in the future
Finally had tought time waiting for this one as Black Flag is the game that got me in the whole franchise in the first place so it has really special place in my ❤. Keep up the good work as I really enjoy these types of videos.

In a Nutshell, A better game than Skull and Bones
This game should have been the original Skull and Bones and remained a game about pirates
Pretty much lol
nothing is better than a AAAA game known as skull and bones.

You don't say!
To answer the thing about the legendary ships possibly not being canon:
Only the achievements are not regarded as necessarily canon or not.
The Animus reads not recorded fact, but memories of those facts, and memories can be _wrong._
It's why cities to the Assassins look like playgrounds, why they're much smaller than they actually are, why the Caribbean looks like a mess, and so on.
@@EvilParagon4I always remember that from the older games. You were reliving the memories, not the actual history.
Literally the only thing that i could think to complain about in this game is it was the one that started the trend of Altair's robes being glued to the legs of characters
That and all the tailing missions, so many tailing missions.
OG AC3 actually started that but considering the game is a pain in the ass to 100% full sync can't blame people for not wanting to unlock them there, remaster somewhat fixed them
one of the biggest and most annoying things that ever happened and I still don't understand why
@@LazerzZbased take
That was ac3. Revelations sort of started it by having the flaps glued to the outfit too though.
James claims he doesn't expect many to watch the whole video. Maybe we can all give a comment to show that we who watched all of it support his work and love it.

This type of content is both perfect for consumption and as background noise for passive gameplay.
Adding this to my “1Hr+ Playlist” 😇
Absolutely. It was definitely worth the effort and the passionate and thoughtful analysis was an enjoyable listen all the way through
I think Black Flag has the best AC storyline.
The song at the end hits you in the feels, for sure
I agree. I like it because it has this deep grounded personal story at its core.
You _understand_ that now you _have_ to make the Valhalla Retrospective, right?

Crazy coincidence, I just started replaying this game a week ago. It's a unique game in the lineup. It was an amazing experience to explore the new world.
I finished it like 4 days ago. The serendipity is incredible, this vid came out at the exact time for me
Slight correction. Edward doesn't kill the Guardians when heading to the Observatory. The game even tells you this. You can even see in your own game play that you are pacifying them instead of killing them.
5 Hours?? We be eatin' good tonight boys
Good point
Love how you have it broke into sequences, it's nostalgic. And the background and your editing style are very immersive. I'm not far onto the video yet but I can tell your production quality on this one is through the roof
Literally started watching this video as something to watch while eating and went on to spend two days watching it to the end. Thankyou so much for making this video and reminding me how much I loved Black Flag and for so many extra insights about the characters and their actual real life story. I don't think I've watched a whole 5hr youtube video with such dedication but from the first 30 minutes you had me hooked (partly because I love this game). Subscribed ❤
Love to hear it! Thank you so much for the kind words, so glad to hear you enjoyed.
Cheers!
Thanks again and I do appreciate the input. Maybe one day in a few years I'll give it a look.
Was planning on replaying it, this is so much better. I always look forward to your retrospectives, some of the best content out there.
Thank you! 🙏🏻
replayed it for the first time since it released about 6 months ago, i ended up playing it fully through 3 times in about 2 months. I don’t think i’ll ever get a game that takes my favorite game series and my favorite historical figures(pirates) and blends them together seamlessly into a near perfect open world rpg.
Pushing that 10 minute mark huh?
Why do so many people leave this exact comment on videos that are straight telling you they are long form content...
@@Mr.LooseLeafIt's called humor...
Who is this Ten-minute Mark and why is he always pushed
I dont care what anyone says Black flag is absolutely tremendous and beautifully written, is it perfect? No. But this game has earned its
praise and gave us one of the best stories and characters and for me my favourite game of all time.
just when i had no idea what UA-cam video to watch, here Lazerzz comes with another absolute masterpiece
Your positivity is impressive but the video is 5 hours long and released 4 minutes before your comment xD
@@Sizzox i have faith in Lazerzz' AC video essays being good
@@vanlllasky Fair enough, just phrased a bit funny is all :p
took me a whole day to finish watching and i was right. nobody else can remind me of my love of AC like James can.
LITERALLY (it's 3am, this game was part of my childhood)
After hitting the 5 hour point, definitely gotta say this is another masterpiece. Black Flag was my first ac game and u are one of the earliest youtubers I remember watching so this is all very nostalgic. Its deep stroy and themes is what got me into the franchise and although its a far cry (no pun intended) from what it used to be, its still fun to revisit the older games and what they mean to us. Hopefully more people see it from a new perspective and less ppl continue to call it a bad ac game. This was a very enjoyable video and I look forward to more great projects from you in the future. :)
when the world had forgotten that his channel existed, he returned
Thank you james for all the hard work you put into these videos ❤
congrats on all your success mate, glad to see you still putting effort in
Amazing retrospective, LazerzZ. It's always a joy when someone who actually understands this franchise talks about it.
Unless...
🥴
My dude you never fail to deliver on amazing content. The way you analyze games is incredible. I always enjoy these retrospectives.
What is content?
48:00 Really nice use of an AC1 quote, this is the type of sophisticated shit I’m subbed for.
a 5 hour retrospective on one of my favorite games of all time. thats what i love to see.
Bro, I don't know how you do it! This video is so engaging that I watched the first 3 hours straight and it didn't even feel that long. So good!
Thank you so much, I'm really glad you enjoyed!
I already loved this game but I think this video displayed so much more of the game I'd never thought about. I thought a 5 hour video might feel directionless but the writing in the video was so captivating, it kept me engaged the whole time 👏👏
I always love your retrospectives, your scrips are so insightful and I just love the way you talk about things that most wouldn’t even consider like how the sea and collectibles play into Edward’s arc
Truly a masterful video mate
Check out my video "(AC Rogue) Controlled Descents in New York" for some examples
You can hard block in the Kenway saga by holding B well in advance of an enemy attack. See my video "(AC4 Black Flag) Lively Havana - Combat Reaper" for some practical examples of mid-combat weapon switching
Early game stealth is really annoying, I agree.
Thank you, James, for helping me understand the themes of the games i loved better than I ever could have, your hard work left a mark on me and as someone young, it truly means a lot to me.
thank you from the bottom of my heart,
I will cherish this video as a fond memory of mine.
This kind of production quality is almost unparallelled.
Bit of a short video ngl
As someone who regularly watches 12 hour deep dives, I unironically agree.
5 hour video retrospective- I haven’t even watched it but I can tell I’m gonna love making my way through this over the next day or so- so excited
"It's not just a great pirate game, It's a tremendous Assassin's Creed game"
Well said brother. Edward's story is so deeply moving and beautiful, for all the flaws with the game's structure, it's so full of heart and care. Legendary game.
facts bro
Thank you Lazerzz for preserving and celebrating what made Assassins Creed great 🎉
The diving bell section prompted an interesting thought;
Given you were talking about how being able to dive anywhere means that nothing is as interesting as when things are marked and can be crafted into an actually interesting place, it lead to the thought that the Assassin's Creed games have become a parody of the Creed itself; everything is permitted but lacks the wisdom to not act on it. You can dive anywhere, you're free to do so, but it'll be uninteresting and pointless, compared to the limits of a set area which seems less free but is more interesting.
I hope this made sense.
I love these long form analysis videos you make. Perfect to listen to in the background.
listening in the background my ass. I'm one video away from being fired, but 0 regrets. Honestly this content is absolutely stellar
Thank you for this introspective piece, the amount of time, effort, and heart you put into these video essays is incredible.
This is genuinely your best video James
Watching this video when I can, about half way through and it’s definitely the best and most in depth analysis on anything I’ve seen on UA-cam so far!
I watched this for five consecutive mornings while I made breakfast and got dressed lmao.
I struggle keeping myself in a calm state usually I would listen to music but it's not as effective I've been listening to all the Assassins Creed hourly videos during my work which helps out quite alot and I'm so thankful for this youtuber to put such amazing detail, time and effort into these long videos. ❤🙏👍
I've already been watching 10+ hours vods and videos, you bet I'll be watching this in one go!
Matt Ryan's voice work is phenomenal
love how im an hour in and he's still on sequence 2 love you james somehow can make all 5 hours worth it:)
I don't know for how long have I been subbed but I wasn't here for a while and I simply knew I was gonna watch the entire thing the instant I saw the thumbnail on my recommended section and I just finished it across 5 sessions or so. Black Flag was the AC I spent the most time on and a very special one to me in multiple ways and I'm really glad I watched this you're a freaking legend
this is arguably the most impactful video in my life youre a master at videos like this but yh black flag has always been my favorite game when i first started playing the game i was in highschool not wise but then the story resonated with me cus i have lost frnds at a young age but growing up its been a long time since ive played the game but this retrospective video opened my eyes it made me emotional and yh helped a lot great video man
Thank you so much, I genuinely appreciate this so much.
Amazing job! So well structured it barely felt like 5 hrs passed at all!
Always happy to watch 5 hours of James analysing a game
Just got to Sequence 5 and I'm thoroughly enjoying this so far; the effort you put into your videos shines through clear as day, especially with all the external research you bring up throughout. Brilliant as always!
Im gonna say it, lazerzz is easily the person who has gotten the most out of assassin's creed, its not even close
Just replayed it after years of first completing it. You couldn’t have posted this at a better time, thanks :)
When a video is longer than the extended version of return of the king you just know it’s gonna be good
Just finished it, great video mate! Excited to continue my black flag play through soon!
My Favourite game of all time
My First AC and that got me into Assassin's Creed and its lore
loved watching all your other ac retrospectives
Can see the care and effort taken in making this video the whole way through. Was a pleasure to watch
Watched it all from start to finish! Another masterpiece to add to your retrospective collection! Great job man!
Finally had tought time waiting for this one as Black Flag is the game that got me in the whole franchise in the first place so it has really special place in my ❤. Keep up the good work as I really enjoy these types of videos.
1:10:27 This is why eye watch this guy, love his personal inputs on how he used to play. Just reminds me of my first AC experiences and it's wholesome to hear another player discuss the little things that made them feel cool or more immersed. Much appreciated Laz!!
