To me this is THE BEST version of Devereux. Sills is just the most incredible Elisabetta I have ever seen ❤❤❤
AMEN to that 10 million times!
ABSOLUTELY!!!
The way Sills executes Elisabetta’s fiendish score sets unattainable limits! No other soprano has sung the role exactly as stipulated by the composer. And what a dramatic effect she has… portraying all of Elisabeth’s royalty, fierce power and at the same time tenderness and affection for Roberto as well as how all these feelings turn into pure rage and mania at the end. Her voice is literally all over the place. Chest notes are accurate, abrupt well placed and sharp as a knife, while the high register impeccable, all combined and weaved with a laser beam coloratura. Nobody comes close to that.
Of Donizetti, Verdi said: “Donizetti knew how to create with his own hands such a monument
that the composers who have succeeded him will not know how to raise a bigger one to him!”
i guess Im asking the wrong place but does anyone know a method to get back into an instagram account..?
I somehow forgot my account password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me!

@Jamir Lyle I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
Years ago I bought the CD recording in the box set which also came with Sills Anna Bolena & Maria Stuarda The 3 Queens Donizetti trilogy. I remember listening for hours I would go in chronological historical timeline order with Anna Bolena first (she was Elizabeth I's mother) then Maria Stuarda (Mary Stewart and Elizabeth I lived at the same time as cousins when they were both adults) and finally Roberto Devereux which is set in1601 (the year of Devereux's execution) toward the end of Elizabeth's life (she died in 1603). History came to life through the beautiful music of Donizetti's score and the wonderful singing of Beverly Sills who is my all time favorite soprano who got me hooked into all opera. Sills as Elizabeth I is a tour de force. She earned that Time magazine cover when she first debuted in the role at NY City Opera in 1970. More than anyone else (even Leyla Gencer, Montserrat Caballe, Lucia Aliberti, Edita Gruberova, Dimitra Theodossiu) she owns this role. It caused considerable strain to her voice and shortened her singing life (as did her Norma) but it was worth it. She is in full character in the scene when she confronts Devereux and condemns him to death. She is heartbreaking in the Vivi Ingrato and Quel Sangue versato final aria. I recently saw the new production at the Los Angeles Opera with Angela Meade and Ramon Vargas. Although they were terrific something was missing. Only Beverly Sills can thrill me like she does in this recording. The score is brilliantly delivered with nuance color and excitement by Charles Mackerras conducting skill. I have always loved this recording!
I wanted to give your wonderful comment 100 thumbs 'up' but UA-cam only allows one. Beverly was fully aware of how singing this opera would shorten her career but wanted 10 exciting years and not 40 bland ones. She got her wish and we got to hear her sing some outstanding music until her cancer surgery. Sadly back then Beverly didn't have a singing teacher any longer. If Estelle Liebling was alive she would have insisted that Beverly recuperate and train all the abdominal muscles that had been cut during her surgery. That didn't happen and Beverly ignored her doctor's orders and was back onstage singing Daughter of the Regiment and sadly she paid the price of 'not wanting people to think she was dead' as she put it! I too have always adored this recording and always will!
I’ve never listened to this entire opera before. Thanks for making it easily available. La Sills is amazing and so is my favorite tenor! Read some of her autobiography asI listened. Great way to spend a few hours.
Absolutely, every time I listen to this specific opera, the first singer that comes to my mind is Beverly Sills. Nobody's like her to this opera.
This recording of "Roberto Devereux" was originally issued by Westminster Records, a now-defunct classical-music subsidiary of ABC Records(which also went out of business years ago).
@enriquerivera3140 Same here! In fact, I don't and won't listen to this opera without Sills! The only other soprano that could have done this role was Callas! But when offered, she turned it down because she knew how difficult it is on the voice! Thank goodness Sills had the "chutzpah" to do this, as she was amazing!!!)
You dear, dear person, whoever you are- thank you!!!
Sills! This voice! A lovely recording
Thank you 🙏
Wonderful! Unbelievable redemption!!
Gorgeous performance
The final five and a half minutes. So breathtaking
The last 16 minutes was recorded in just ONE take too. Thank you opera for this glorious upload!
I love It...
Beverly Sills is perhaps a little light vocally for Elisabetta but she sure sings the hell out of her and is riveting from start to end.
Unfortunately this beautiful opera is not as popular as Anna Bolena or Maria Stuarda, but just as great. Donizetti himself came to dislike this opera because he was forced to compose it to fulfill a commission while his beloved wife Virginia was dying.
Beautiful music, but I did not know that about his personal life 😢
The baritone/mezzo confrontation in Act III is one of my favorite moments in a Donizetti opera, especially when sung by Beverly Wolff. Actually, Act III altogether is just brilliant.
The role of Sarah is every bit as difficult in its own way as that of Elizabeth, and Beverly Wolff's performance is a tour de force.
Definitive!
1:58:16 finale
It probably is the best sung Roberto Devereaux. Beverly Sills was one of a kind singer. Mackeras's leadership was very dramatic - you didn't need to see them with your eyes; you saw them with your ears.
32:22
Wolff does not sound confident. she sounds retiring, scared of her own voice.
I much prefer Sills' singing, it's "in your face".
42:14 to 42:30 what the **** was that???????? worst singing ever. what note was that?
How horrible these advertisements!!
This is impossible to listen to ! ! ! ! Every 3min interuption by commercials ! ! ! ! !
Shame on the one who published and allowed it !
Commercials were added by the copyright owner (the record company). If you want to listen to this without commercials, you can either install an ad-blocker, buy youtube premium, or buy the original album in mp3 or cd format.Shame on you for being so cheap and for complaining for a free service.
