This looks great! Have a bit of a backlog before I'll get to it but I'm stoked to eventually play it. Great video bro!

The review is great, but I actually disagree with two things:
    - Spirits poor leveling decisions.
    - Music.
You can get all spirits to lv5 without issue, only to lv6 that is limited, meaning that you can either put everyone at 5 or max 8 spirits.
This is not as punishing as it seems to most people, like, at all.
And I did all boss fights with Umbral Knight, Siegrid and Headless Defender (after I unlocked him). Only time I changed was at the last boss, which I did with 1 lv5 sprit, 1lv4 spirit, 1lv3 spirit.
I had also 3 maxed red spirits, but they were there for the normal attack dmg for the downtime.
    Now Music:
You used the worst example for that, although Ulv fight feels erradic and very fast paced, that is exactly his tragedy.
Ulv is called the Mad Knight, he is treated like he's insane, he fights in a way that shows that he's not right in his mind, but his wish, his only wish, is to see her again, and once he's near his end, he realizes that she will never see the flowers again, the flowers he cared and grew, the flowers he protected until the very end.
The song is to express exactly that, his tragedy, not his battle.
The music in Ender Lilies is not meant to follow the battle, but rather, the music is there to tell a story, to let you know what you are doing, for you to see the tragedy that happened in the past, and the relief you are bringing to the future.

I love how the NG+ for this game changes how the some of the moves of the enemies opperate either by adding projectiles or increasing the radius of slams or via some other method. But it is especially clear in the bosses. Every boss has a NG+ variant that changes around the boss phases and how they operate. It's really ramps up the challenge for an experienced player to test them on the boss mechanics and was easily the most fun part of NG+.

Great review, just thought I would chime in with the fact that there is nowadays an NG+ (and it's more than just the regular "replay the game but enemies have scaled up health and damage"), a boss rush (and I believe it features the NG+ versions of bosses), and some challenge settings for after you've completed it once (can be applied either to NG+ or to an NG file)
Edit: haven't seen anything new in terms of platforming, tho, and the slappers in Verboten Domain are probably still a bitch, haven't gotten there yet either in NG+

Tips for anyone playing when it gets hard, there are 2 parry spirits; headless defender and “the pot spirit” (forgot the name). And using both of them can make short work of pretty much any hard enemy, bosses included. Ofc the trade off is if you get don’t get the timing down you get hit, and you lose the one of the stock. But once you level them up and get the timing, you rarely have to dodge. Just stand your ground, parry and reap the benefits of high damage and broken posture.

Gotta say, Ender Lillies just hooked me in a way other games seldom do. I finished the entire thing over the course of a three day weekend with 100% completion. I am a sucker for storylines that take place in ruined worlds that despite their desperate situation always end up quite hopeful. I am not sure if I will ever return for NG+ because I enjoyed it moreso for the atmosphere rather than the challegenging gameplay but I am extremely excited for the full release of Ender Magnolia, even if it were a carbon copy with a different art direction and naming convention, I'd still eat it up

i tried this and couldn't get into it after an hour or two. the atmosphere is so drab it detracts from the fun for me. after watching this review i'm gonna give it another shot, it would be a shame to miss out on what seems like such a good game just because i don't like the aesthetics
nice content over here by the way, subbed

      Hollow Knight has deeper exploration
      Ori is a better platformer
Ender Lilies is definitely more encounter focused
They're all on different parts of the Metroidvania spectrum.

This or vigil the long night?

    • @metroidvaniareview7946
      @metroidvaniareview7946  Рік тому

That is a tough choice, it depends on what you want more.
If you like building your character, OP spells, and more of a macabre story, the Vigil is the better choice. It's also faster paced and the weapon system is more intuitive if you've played similar games.
(Both games are pretty macabre, Vigil is just moreso.)
I personally like Ender Lilies a bit more because the story better connected with me . It's also got a more hopeful message overall. Combat-wise it feels closer to Classic-vania where resource management plays a significant role besides just dodging attacks and looking for openings. Thus the combat is going to be more deliberate and less frenetic.
They have similarities but what makes them different is enough to divide would-be fans of both, I think.

With everything I've seen of this game, I can't help but feel like all of the melancholy is surfaced at the textual level, as if the actual plot or lore is almost directly just a description of depression, rather than allowing mood and aesthetic to blossom through more concrete details. The word for that is melodramatic, and I find it a bit off-putting. It's the difference between depth of feeling that rises from details and just performative, prescriptive emotion, broadly telegraphing to the player how they should respond to everything. I'm sure I'll enjoy Ender Lilies, but the heavy-handedness of its themes might prevent me from loving it. Hopefully I'm mistaken though and will be pleasantly surprised when I get around to playing it.

I'd definitely be interested in hearing your take on it.
Frankly I could have spent another 20 minutes talking about the story, but I'm already skirting closer to the edge of spoiler territory on this review than I'd like (and also the length is longer than I would have liked.) Maybe the subject for another video if we ever find the time.

Arguably, yes. As much as I love HK for its scale and density, it can feel bloated. I liked the story/lore, thought it was delivered and laid oit better and the game world was a much more digestible size.
