Modern displays don't make much of a sound anymore, but the old CRT types make a super high frequency noise that lots of people can't hear. I've always noticed the sound distinctly and now I know what the exact frequency is thanks to the explanation I found below:
----
50 Hz/60 Hz CRTs used for television operate with horizontal scanning frequencies of 15,734 Hz (for NTSC systems) or 15,625 Hz (for PAL systems).
These frequencies are at the upper range of human hearing and are inaudible to many people; however, some people (especially children) will perceive a high-pitched tone near an operating television CRT.
The sound is due to magnetostriction in the magnetic core and periodic movement of windings of the flyback transformer. Magnetostriction (cf. electrostriction) is a property of ferromagnetic materials that causes them to change their shape or dimensions during the process of magnetization.
The variation of materials' magnetization due to the applied magnetic field changes the magnetostrictive strain until reaching its saturation value, λ.

Hey, if you read this far let me know if you would be interested in the PAL version. I tried it out but it wasn't very nostalgic sounding to me since I've never heard the noise from a PAL television. I did have a CRT tv hooked up for the holidays this year, and when I was comparing it to the NTSC frequency noted above it sounded identical to me. Happy Holidays!

I hear this in my ears even when not watching tv
i always hear crysknife007
It's called tinnitus, my friend
*I, too, have constant tinnitus. Always wear ear protection when discharging firearms.*
Born with tinnitus here. I don't know what absolute silence is. Much like a person born deaf can't comprehend sound, I can't comprehend silence. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee go my ears. I rely on channels like this to sleep.
@@fbidenflagguy mine might be from an ototoxic medication
It sounds so real, it even gives me the headspliting headache I get from the real thing...
I think I’m deaf I can’t hear it
This is cool! I have a 13" Sharp TV from the 90's that makes this sound and I'm the only person that can hear it. This might be good to play full blast to shut your neighbors dog up.
I can’t hear it am I deaf?
@@grislygrimhorrorchannelPeople who are a certain age cant hear it because its a very high frequency
dude I'm gonna cry... what this reminds me of is waking up in the middle of the night like 1 or 2 in the morning... firing up my PS2 and turning on the TV and hearing that sound as I continue to play video games up until the time to wake up... most fun I've ever had playing video games. Did it late enough for everyone to be asleep. Because when I did get to play I had a time limit sometimes.
I don’t hear jackshit. My tinnitus is louder.
leaves for a year and comes back like nothing happened
true legend
So good to hear more of your stuff...Ive been using your colored noise to sleep for about a year now!! I can always count on there never being any ads, and its just plain relaxing..thank you so, so much
Man,.. what a Life. You have the Time to sleep for a whole Year, that sounds great :D
@@user-ne9oj1tz8l Lol I wish ☺️
😊 1:56 😊 2:08 😊
😊
such a simple way to induce the most insane amount of nostalgia
The legend has returned
If you can't hear anything it's because is a very very very high pitched noise that it's almost unheard for any regular ear!
Turned on an old TV recently and I'm fascinated how no one was bothered by this, including me.
I’m 44 and can still just barely hear it. Pretty pleased with that fact. My kids said it was quite loud.
I watch your videos almost every night to fall asleep, it's good to see you back
what are yall talking about this is what the inside of my brain always sounds like when its too quiet
That’s called tinnitus lmao I have tinnitus and have moderate hearing loss. You should go to the doctors and get it checked out
This has totally made my Xmas .. I wish I was tuned in from the start ... I jumped in after 7 hours ... 👌🏽
the myth the legend is back! ! i love your videos so much they help me sleep so well ! ! !
I am very appreciate your work!! It helps me with sleep and relaxation. Especially the "planet sounds" videos
this kept going even after I paused the video! amazing!
same
You could always tell when a TV was on because of this noise haha, hella nostalgic
I am surprised that I can still hear this sound. Thanks for the nostalgia!
Suprised seeing you here.
Happy holidays to you too! 😊
Wow, the nostalga that kicked un as soon as I heard this... Absolutely ludicrous find!
legendary, your vids are great man, welcome back
POV: you're doing nothing alone in your room
Get a digitalized VHS copy of a 1990s flick, get ShaderGlass, apply newpixie-crt or crt-maximus-royale filters on top of the media player, play this video in the background and you get ALMOST the same experience as the real thing!
crysknife007 you are an absolute genius. brilliant. i would dance to this at the club anyday. trap remix when?? i love your work and am extremely dedicated to your deep brown noise and your fan sounds. stunning. keep up the amazing work i have high hopes for future sounds.
Hi Crysknife, I wanted to let you know that your name is legendary among my friends and so many people I know recognize your videos and when I say your name they almost always know you, especially by your pfp
god I can hear this even when the CRT is off
Oh my god..HE'S BACK!
I haven't heard this in years. ty
He's back!
My ears can hear all the way to 18-19k and I'm 24. However, I was born with tinnitus and it gets worse as I age. This is what it sounds like, but it slowly covers lower and lower frequencies until all I'll be able to hear is loud reverberating wind in my ears...
This sound makes me feel that a room is bigger than it is. It's a very weird feeling
GUYS THEY ARE BACK
THEY HAVE RETURNED
I have a TV from the 90s which is a Phillips with VHS and this is what I hear whenever I turn it on.
If i'm gonna get a CRT I better get used to this. My grandma has a CRT that I really want but she's in New York and I'm in Florida. This sound makes me want to blue shell myself. Oddly enough my friend has like 5 CRTs but none do the sound. Probably because they're smaller.
After taking a picture with my cheap 1998 kodak camera it would make this sound for a couple seconds. I assume it's the sound of capacitors passing energy.
use this to relax and study too
so this is the most likely cause of my tinnitus.
a CRT should be called a tinnitus simulator.
Glad to see youre still active. I watch your videos every night.
this sounds like how onions smell tbh
it makes your eyes water
crysknife007 i played this sound at full blast and my dog jumped out of my caravan. if anybody has seen him, she is a big massive bear like creature but he is the size of a small chihuahua. due to an unfortunate incident involving a jumbo tenis ball and leave in conditioner when she was just a pup Clarise has no nostrils. Completely unrelated to the previous incident, he once ingested every single one of my life-size chewbacca teddies and to this day keeps throwing up wet stuffing. Clarence is like an aunt to me i sometimes call him Auntie Clarissa so if anyone sees her running around on her five legs please contact me under this comment. Thank you crysknife007 for making this amazing sound ❤️
Wow! Thanks.
@@crysknife007 no bothers at all crysknife double oh seven you are am inspiration to us all.
@@crysknife007 wanna do a story in a x-wing I’m making a story up
how you knew I needed it at all? ?? how?
This is how you knew someone was watching a movie in another class at school
Is this actually the same frequency that those tvs generated? I haven't been around one in a while, I'm just trying to check if I can still hear them or not.
Haha yea, I own one. They whine all the time and you can hear it from a mile away!
I use a CRT daily and I can attest this is the sound one of my CRT TVs makes. But they all don't make it.
@@jimmyschmidt14 Haha me too! though didn't know some didn't whine
I swear to god this shit caused my tinnitus
it tickles my ears
I can't hear it, but my cat can. LOL
Inaudible for me- OW OH I HEAR IT
People with headphones who can’t hear it
I thought i went insane until i stopped the video at 10 hour mark
I can't hear anything on this one
The sounds of Retro Gaming
i better enjoy this noise before i get to old to hear it
omg this sound has always been my nightmare
im sorry but nro this shit hurts my ears 😭😭😭😭
I'm at 1:56:07 and still want more and think it getting louder and louder
you can hear this even if you turn off the volume.
Ouch, my ears
I don't hear it. it must be synched with my tinnitus
same
actually when i pause and play the video i can hear it louder when its playing. crazy
Yeah if your tinnitus sound is similar is synchs up. Crazy stuff.
I have to notch this frequency out of my microphone when live streaming =P 15.7khz is CURSED.
This is better with the sound alll the way down
Or off...
This goes hard on zero volume
Should I be hearing something?
Why do they make that noise
I need more megabyte
to make my gigabyte

Why can't I hear anything???
Strange i don't hear it but i feel an unpleasant force against my ears.
My neck hurts
I don't hear anything
I think I'm deaf. This sounds very low, right?
30 years old and this is annyoing.
I don’t hear anything ?? Odd
Me neither.
People typically lose the ability to hear ultra high frequencies as you age.
But it's more of a curse than anything. Hardly any practical use for hearing it, and if you work all day in a place with certain machinery that produces this or a similar sound, it can drive you insane.
So, consider yourself lucky. 😂
ow
the volume is so loud you rekt my ears
Ow
*I only hear silence*
There's no sound
I hear nothing. Full volume on my phone and I fast forwarded to multiple spots.. am I missing a woooosh moment?
some people cant hear this....... I hear it all the time
I don’t hear anything either, but old crt tvs used to drive me mad with the high-pitched whine they always made so I assume the noise is that. Back then, my parents claimed they couldn’t hear it, although I could hear it even outside the house when the tv was on.
Maybe I’m too old and deaf to hear it now, like those weird “drive the yoof away” alarms of the early 2000s.
@@JustT0N3 my tinnitus must be the same frequency. Thanks
Wtf
Thanks, I hate it.
Oh hello tinnitus
I cant hear everything
