I mean - except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be." - J.D. Salinger
And, in so many ways, isn't that what Shayne and the rest of the Smosh team do, along with all the other wholesome UA-camrs who take time out of their lives to bring meaning to ours? Aren't we all, in so many ways, just little kids playing a game in a big field that none of us really understand?

Shayne's journal entries that he shared are truly reflective of his desire to understand the world/people around him and to be a positive/loving influence to others. These are pieces of what matters most to Shayne... I'm very impressed and honored to have gotten that glimpse into this internet funny-man's innermost being. "The Chosen" is a silly, exaggerated character, but at the same time has an innocent sincerity that is pleaseant to the audience. Just like Shayne is silly and exaggerated on camera, but also has these deeper elements that are a peak into his inner world. A humanizing and healing experience watching the podcast today. All three have done a fantastic job of delving into the human experience of growing up and experiencing awareness of the Self and reality. This podcast is beneficial for those who seek validation and desire deeper introspection. :)

45:13 - Shayne don't cringe too hard, what you said was on point - and especially for someone of your age at the time, it - particularly about hateful people acting out of the same "need" for attention as those who act nice (or out of genuine kindness) - is a pretty damn deep insight into the "human condition" that is unfortunately lost on many who are even twice, three times that age. It tracks then that you pursued your degree in psychology.

Aww shayne.. i cant help but feel bad for his younger self. he was put under a lot of pressure, so much so that he could barely be a kid. That seemed to have really had an impact on his confidence and self image growing up. I'm glad he was able to grow from that, having the weight of your career on your shoulders at such a young age was definitely not easy. I'm glad he was able to grow into the amazing, capable adult that he is today. We luv u shayne

Former teacher, the "journal every day" or "write every day" kind of assignment is pretty common in a lot of middle-to-high school English classes because it's often REALLY effective at improving kids' writing skills. Getting that daily practice in, even if you write incoherent bullshit, ends up being valuable. And Amanda is right, a lot of kids start off writing lies, but eventually they start writing more truthful stuff because it plays against kids' attention spans. After a while, you'll get tired of writing the same kinds of lies and start writing what you really think just to feel something different.

I thought he did a good job of allowing all of us to go into it without feeling like we have to fake it to please his expectations.

"well you have a bunch of people figuring out life at the exact same time" "they're all just bullying each other on what they think is okay, and what they think is normal and so everyone is battling on like what's normal and what's not" this definitely extends well into adulthood. Nobody fully understands life and existence and humanity as a whole or even themselves and everyone just fights about what they believe to be right putting down people who disagree with them instead of actually trying to reach an agreement that works for all parties, for everyone's unique differences. It's the same problems just in different forms

The way Shayne explained how he wrote in journals was my main reason I stopped journaling. (Especially with the entries he read, that's literally how I wrote and I cringed hard at myself.)
I self-edited a lot and I was always on guard because I was being watched or that anything I did or in this case, wrote, should matter. And that never felt right with me because I wasn't being true to myself. So I stopped writing which is a shame because I had so many memories I wanted to keep and reminisce on and I just slowly forgot them over time.
Hopefully, after being inspired by this episode, I could get back to journaling and try to express myself in the most candid and genuine ways possible like Amanda and Courtney did in their diaries.

I was the same way when I was a teenager. The character of The Chosen feels like a superiority complex mask a lot of people take on when they feel insecure, small, or unimportant but have the capacity for self-awareness, something that can "feel" special. It feels like the mask is an attempt to rationalize those feelings of inferiority , but by taking on that character we isolate ourselves from so many other people who ALSO can be self-aware and feel insecure, small, and unimportant, thus most of us realize it's an unhealthy coping mechanism(though not all). It was great to hear that the character of The Chosen came from Shayne's past, very relatable.

I think the testing was what Amanda's teacher was talking about in that response to her journal, not an actual person being codenamed "MCAS"

AHH it’s so important to have those genuine connections with teachers through writing assignments like that! My freshman year a very unfortunate situation happened with a student and it deeply impacted the school, but instead of ignoring it like every other teacher, my English teacher let us vent via writing how we felt about the situation and wrote us back validating our feelings and offering resources for counseling ❤️
As kids we are so in our heads about things that a responsible and respectful adult can help us navigate.
    Love y’all!
